He was told. He broke the number one rule, "profanity". If this was real life he'd be liable for a life sentence, or worse for that kind of talk.

At least when my friend was permabanned from the forums they showed him the post containing the "profanity" that triggered it. Jeeze.

Yep and it can kill the game in the long run if it gets out of hand. Like a new game comes out that becomes popular with rules that aren't so harsh, where people don't have to stress out around other players who are itching to report for anything just because you say something they don't like.
They leave, their friends leave with them its a domino effect, it can happen never say never that's why you don't make rules that can't be explained, then when asking you can't tell them?
the rules are based on today's generation which is bad to mix reality with gaming a world that is supposed to get away from real life stuff but you politics it ruins the game then its no longer a MMO its you versus monsters and friends who won't turn you in for things.
my cousin had something kinda the same, he asked a Japanese player in final fantasy 11 if he could ask someone in japanese for a raise using the auto translator in the party, 5 minutes later temp banned he had to wait in the lobby to find out why he was banned, then the english GM got on and asked which GM banned him and he didn't know it just zapped him off game, he said that ain't right and lifted the ban and told him he would deal with it and that asking for raise isn't a ban offense but a GM banned with no reason without showing himself.
this is a true story he told me about it, was in the boyahda tree crabs killed the whm he had to sit on ps2 lobby like till 6 am and was in a line.
Language fliters can block out things that aren't swearing while not blocking swear words that have some sort of altered spelling to bypass the filter. Also because of how fluid and complex language can be, there's no real way a language filter can realistically work due to how many things said that could be classified as "profanity" that would or could never be blocked by a language filter.
Also yes, GM's do need to realize that their work might get a tiny bit easier if they were able to explain why something was wrong to prevent a future malfeasance, or at least look like they're not on par with EA in terms of customer service (or lack thereof).
That's when you upgrade the filter.
here is the thing I am sure people heard this stuff outside the game at school at work at home from friends in real life the only reason anyone would report is that they got beaten by their own game and want to get revenge on someone else and SE made that easier for someone to do.
These things they hear do not bug them yet pretend to let it bug them in game just to get someone in trouble.
doesn't matter who started it either it could be a tool to blame each other get each other banned the new rule set is basically one sided.
Lets give a example.
both fight both say things that would probably get them in trouble.
both call a GM
2 GM's answer to each person.
1 GM is lenient
2 GM is law abiding
GM 1 says okay just don't do it again you two just need to Blist or calm down stay away from each other.
GM 2 jails the person temp bans and doesn't give a reason why.
that is a problem.
its also a reason why I don't talk to people in game except my friends I don't meet nobody I don't want to cause they can't handle real talk glad trust system was added cause that really helps me avoid people and just enjoy the game alone and with friends I can trust.
And yes there are people who purposely try to lure you into a fight I seen it first hand with my cousin, we were in a party, the whm wouldn't cure my cousin on paladin my cousin asks him are you trying to let me die? he goes yes because you are being rude to me, then I say he hasn't said a word this whole time, so we made a choice to kick him, even the other member was surprised.
after that it was a eye opener to ignore anyone ffxiv community couldn't touch a candle to FFXI's community they were team players nice people.
nothing against anyone I am not saying everyone is like that but I don't wanna take my chances.
