I think if you read the whole thread you'll see people care about the name. Your "it doesn't affect anything anyway as far as i care- so you shouldn't have any option you want" seems more like arguing for the sake of to me.

I did read the whole thread. Twice now actually.
I was trying to comment that instead of being totally upset at the potential of losing the besaid name, I would be more concerned with reorganizing one of the new servers in order to accomplish what besaid had in the past. I think (my opinion mind you) that people take pride more in what was accomplished on besaid MORE than they do with the name itself. I could be wrong, but I dont see as many people complaining over their server name being lost in other threads as much as I do by those from besaid. If I had a RP character on besaid, I would be working more towards keeping the culture and community that was formed on besaid alive more than I would be trying to keep a name I have no control over. The Op doesnt have any control over what name they end up getting, but they do have some control over trying to keep their community together. I love what Besaid has done even though I m not on that server. More than anything, I hope they are able to do it again, I just think they should focus more on that instead of focusing on things outside of their control. Control what you can, and deal with the things you cant as best you know how was what I was trying to get at.
I want you to go back to the group of dev's who thought this up and tell them that by this logic the duplicate names issue would be more easily resolved by forcing a name change on everyone. Because you know: Players often choose names based on popularity.
Then softly say "Derp." before walking out the room.
It's a logical answer, but it doesn't change the fact that this has, and will shatter the community on every world. Now for all I know, i'm going to lose everyone I know and be stuck on a Japanese dominant server. {No thanks.}
Although I see where they are getting at without naming the worlds, but the same effect might come from numbers. Such as, people might just fill it in sequentially. Or maybe people would go by superstition or avoid unlucky numbers. Such as people might aim for numbers like 7 or 8, and avoid numbers like 4. Or avoid world 10 because of a larger multilingual/foreign player base.
If the only purpose was to allow people to stay together, while giving an even distribution, then why not allow players to form circles and then assign those circles to a random world? As for the European players, allow them to also have a checkbox option to be placed in a world more populated for German and French players. This way their is control in assigning the circle groups to evenly distribute the players population, and still allow player to keep their contacts. Additionally, they could also avoid conflicting player/retainer names as much as possible, oppose to just being first come first served.
With the current structure, it's still a scramble to join a world that might be overpopulated soon. There would be a sudden rush on the first day to secure a place, and secure your character names on a server. Then followed by corrections if anyone happens to be left out of their social circle group.
Personally though, I only care a little bit about the world name, being able to stick together with people I already play with is more important to me. If I can get both, then great, but priority goes to social circles.
Well I certainly wouldn't advise against doing that but if the problem can be circumvented by you know, getting the devs attention, I think fighting the two front war is advisable.
I suppose the analogy for me is lets say i have a favorite coffee cup, I'm looking at you Yoshi P, and then suddenly they take my cup and put in a box like 9 other boxes. Each may hold the same amount of coffee- but one of those is my favorite cup by god. I don't really like spinning for a 10% chance to get my favorite cup back when its a perfectly viable option to you know, show me the cups. SHOW ME THE CUPS!
Well, so now people won't choose the coolest name but just Server N°1...
Best part is, in under a week people will stop complaining and move on, like the Goobbue mount situation.
...Yeah there were complaints about the Goobbue and constant praise over it and now you see almost neither lol.
I want to be on server xxSephirothxCloudxx!!! Screw balanced world populations!!!
Seriously, is the community going to make this an issue?? If so, I recommend Producer/Director Yoshida keep the new server names as they are announced right now. That's right. You don't get historical names, you get "World 1", "World 2", etc.
Seriously.
