A serious discussion about abridging the story quest 1-50 (discouraging new players)

It's never too late for them to go through and pare down the filler in the 50 MSQ, thus saving some subs in the process.

Really, doing that alone would be a HUGE help. I'm sure there have already been tons of ragequits as a result of the 50 MSQ, probably people who came back to try the expansion and just gave up after realizing how much boring, crappy filler they were going to have to slog through before actually being able to try one of the new classes.

That's the thing some folks just don't seem to understand: it's VERY easy to say "HOW CAN YOU NOT LOVE FFXIV'S STORY!?!!" when you've played through it somewhat recently and were invested in it from the start. For people who may have played half way through then left for ~a year, they're coming back to try out the new content, not to see the rest of the story.

It's basically like someone switching banks because they didn't like the fees from their old bank, then they give their old bank a try again and the old bank is like "Now you have to pay all of the fees that you missed when you weren't here."

And even the most devout lore nuts can't seem to come up with a good reason as to why players should have to watch the story. I don't think I've even seen someone say, "The story is really good and you should experience it!" but instead they're like "YOU CAN JUST HIT ESC SO WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING?!!??!?!"

If it's something players are just going to mash esc through anyway, why force them to do it at all?

so my question to the people who bought the expac... why did you buy it? you knew the expansion was gated by the story they said that 3 months in advance and yet you still bought it... you didnt have to until you actually beat the story but you STILL did and are now complaining.... so my question is why?

I bought the expansion because I (just barely) finished the MSQ in time. If I didn't, I would have quit the game.

I know some people who didn't make it in time. They missed out on the first days of the expansion, of experiencing dungeons and other content for the first time with other people. I don't think that is right.

Just because I purchased the game and am still having fun with it doesn't mean that I like/agree with every facet of it. Some of us don't need to see others suffer through content they don't enjoy to validate our own trudging through that content ourselves.

People have quoted a list of features for HW (from SE) earlier in this thread and nowhere did anyone say anything about "must have the MSQ completed to access HW content".

And while the fact that you had to finish the MSQ was something SE mentioned on the FFXIV site at some point, I'm sure, it's not like every promo video for the new classes had a warning cautioning players about needing to finish it first. Many people probably saw that there was new content and didn't even begin to assume that there'd be something hold them back from experiencing it on day 1. Hell, new classes are almost NEVER gated...

You have to remember that players have varying levels of investment in FFXIV. For some, it's their entire goddamn life. For others, it's just one of many games they play or may be INTERESTED in playing at some point in the future. There's no reason to expect people to be aware of everything that needs to be done in order to experience expansion content.

And frankly, gating expansion content behind story content is unheard of in today's MMO market, except where level is concerned.

Again, it has nothing to do with the quality of the story and everything to do with the fact that some people don't play MMOs for the story. FFXIV's dungeons and raids are right up there with WoW's, IMO, and I know plenty of people who would play FFXIV just for the endgame, but getting there is just a long, boring, pointless, ESC-mashing tedium festival. At a certain point, they just decide to spend the precious little free time they have playing a game that'll actually let them have fun right away instead of gating the fun behind hours upon hours of boredom.

So let me get this straight. You guys want to remove parts of the MSQ because it is gating new players from the expansion between 1 - 50.

Just so you know the MSQ from 1- 50 is the fastest way to level to 50. It is the post 50 MSQ that should be made into a unabridged version to help people get through the gate faster.

Most of the complaints on this thread are about the MSQ from 1 - 50 when the actual issue is the post 2.0 patch MSQ.

You are assuming that everyone reads the forums and watches the dev letters. No where on the website or on any promotional material does it say that it just says "sufficient progress" which is a rather open ended statement.

A brand new player wouldn't know to come to the forums or some other XIV website to verify whether or not they needed the base game completed in order to use one of the fancy new jobs on the box of the game they picked up.

So increasing the xp for all 1-49 quests, tripling the number of available beast tribe quests, cutting the cost of food buffs and increasing FC buffs didn't help the leveling process.

Yeah I don't get this either.... Trimming the fat in 2.1-2.55 is fine, and making some of those dumb quests optional is good idea. But making the entire 2.0 MSQ optional IS NOT OK. Because the entire 3.0 expansion is all about GATING CONTENT and ACCESS everywhere in the main game. In 2.0, you can level gathering to 50 without having to do MSQ, in 3.0, 100% of the areas you need are gated behind MSQ, so you MUST have fighting class to progress unless.

I think the other main beef is gating the new jobs behind MSQ 2.55.... because they can easily make that new jobs only accessible for players who already have any class at 50, and have completed ONLY 2.0 MSQ, heck they can make it to 2.3. But at this stage, it's moot point, you are better off finishing those and be done with it. ALSO, completing all dungeons in 2.1-2.55 is a good idea to get familiar with mechanics because those are repeated with some twist in 3.0.

Do EVERYONE a favor, be at least a decent players who have experienced many of the mechanics (and can read the battle flow) - so if you decide going blind, you are not a big hindrance to your other fellow players - and making a 25 minutes run dungeons turn into 60 minutes full run with 3-4 wipes on every bosses lol.

We're all perfectly aware of this, yes, which is why making the story optional shouldn't be a big deal because you are still amply rewarded for going through it.

But it should be up to the player to choose what they want to do in the game, be it sidequests, leves, fates or just grinding dungeons with friends.

LOL, uhm, just NO. You might as well don't play this game at all. Making some quests optional is fine, trimming fetch quests is fine, but making the entire MSQ in the entire game optional is NOT OK. This is not Skyrim, Elderscroll, World of Warcraft type of game, this is FINAL FANTASY, I mean, why beating a dead horse over this. This is never going to be a theme park game, at least not now. SE do release you after you complete the MSQ and let you roam free to do as you see fit once you hit level cap. Again, if any of your friends just want shoot and gun game with almost no story, there is Destiny. Also Elder Scroll Online is available as well. Maybe those are games that are more to their liking. Heck, FFXI is still up and running too, you can try it and compare - FF14 is already so much casual and newbie friendly.

Well, this is SE games - and it is one of their FINAL FANTASY flagship which to their intended core audience must adhere to certain rules (as much as it does have the downfall of the staple JRPG inane fetch quest and corny story, peppered with OMG fantastic cutscene). Making FF turn into a theme park with Skyrim + Elderscroll flavor is not OK, since their core audience (those japanese players) would probably revolt. There is a reason you don't see Elderscroll games charting very high in Japan.

I don't tell people to quit, just bite the bullet, skip the CS, do the MSQ in between waiting for dungeons, and just get it done. But if you really really hate these quest driven game, why are you here? Since 3.0 is all about quest and MSQ, gating content and access everywhere, once you finish all of them, the actual "I do what I want when I want" can start. Again, if you don't like it, there are countless other online games that may suit your play style. I am suggesting Destiny because it lacks story, more action oriented, have smooth as butter control, and such a joy to play (kill everything). I have not play Elderscroll Online, and probably will not bother at all since this is not my kind of game.

Well you do have options, you can just bite the bullet, skip the dumb CS, do the MSQ ASAP (they are good to do while waiting for dungeons - at least it gives you XP and money). Or you can just drop it, and move on, because this is not going to change in 3.0, and it only get worse when flying access is also gated behind "optional quests", and areas are all gated behind MSQ. If you just want to level up your gatherer to 60, guess what, you can't!!! You have to complete MSQ...

I may not always agree with the way they do MSQ and those optional quest, but it is very consistent formula in JRPG, so I cannot say they try to do anything different or out of context from the old school flavor of typical FF story and gameplay. And yes, so I made peace with this, because I want to play FF online games that mix up World of Warcraft, Rift and Guild War, with a heavy dose of fantastic Fan Service from all past FF games. I do not want this game turns into Elderscroll Skyrim Fallout Grand Theft Auto of sandbox game, otherwise I would have play those games instead.

See, it's this kind of attitude which makes me wonder if people like you understand their fellow players at ALL...

First of all, I must once again point out that experiencing the story has nothing to do with experiencing the raid content. There is LITERALLY no correlation between the two. Knowing why you're fighting a boss has no influence on the mechanics.

Second, what's the difference between a person who mashed esc to skip all the cutscenes before a raid and a person who had the raid unlocked by hitting level 60? Really, what's the difference?

And third, as I've said before but you keep evading the question, you DO realize there are people who play FFXIV, couldn't give less of a steaming crap about the story, but play exclusively to gather/craft stuff, right? FFXIV is actually an amazing economy simulator, easily the best I've seen in an MMO (though I've not played EVE Online...).

The endgame story will never mean anything to these people, yet they still pay SE $15 per month and that money goes toward developing more of the raid content and story that they'll never actually experience.

I don't understand why you can't wrap your head around the idea that people can play and enjoy FFXIV without having even one bit of care for the storyline, and I understand even less why you think YOUR insisting that they should have to do it constitutes an argument...

Yoshi-P already said that he's fine with people "fast forwarding" the story, and if that's the case, why make it mandatory at all?

Does knowing that people didn't have to do the story HARM you in some way? If that's the case, why doesn't it harm you to know that they just mashed esc throughout the whole thing and have no idea what anything in the game is about?

Um, this IS a themepark game. Any game where questlines send you to progressively harder zones is, by definition, a themepark game.

The opposite of this would be a sandbox, in which there are few to no quests and players have to go figure out things to do in the world without the game's help.

I do understand, I have a friend who cannot give a crap about story or quest, all she does is crafting and gathering, end of story. Her simple solution is to have her son does all the battle related and finish MSQ to level 60 so she can go back to craft and gathering. It helps that it is summer :) And another friend who press skip CS, he only likes raid and dungeons. None of these players care one bit about the MSQ, they don't give a rat ass, but they bite the bullet and get it done, it is "activity something to do" and you only do it once. They enjoy those "cinematic grand scale battle" cutscene, but other than that, all the inane quests are nothing but "free xp" that helps them get to level 60 much faster.

I can't make you like it 2.1-2.55, and you sure as hell will probably not going to like 3.0 either since it is more of the same and the worst offender in gating content. At least 2.0 does not lock areas, I can get my friends all the teleport stone to the entire 2.0 areas and leave them level gathering and crafting to 50 with ease (you only have to get to level 10 to unlock Armory). No so much here in 3.0..... Everything is all about MSQ.

So I might as well give free advice to those type of players, save your money, and just move on. Since 3.0 is not magically solve the "gating everything behind MSQ" - and this thread is basically asking, can you change the entire FF14 game NOW and make everything optional and give me access to ALL areas when I level up. This is something they will not do, at least not now. And let's not forget those players who actually like the game as it is, which is probably a good 90% of them. Otherwise we will see 500 threads of "SKIP MSQ please, turn this into SANDBOX game".

LMAO, but you do have two options :) It's not like you are forced to quit. Sadly you don't have options to NOT do the dungeons if you want "free endgame gears" not from crafting. So I guess soon we will have to deal with 500 more threads of "SE can you give me options of NOT doing any Dungeons at all so I can get my free gears and not having to play with other people - because I ONLY WANT TO DO QUESTS to level up and still get my access to gears and NOT DO DUNGEONS please!!"

I mean let's face it, if SE let you skip MSQ, I am sure there are groups of players who also rather do MSQ and NOT having to be forced to do dungeons to advance anywhere in the game. So let's make that optional as well. Basically open everything, ignore everything about the game play and content, and let us just do what we want ASAP right now. You want to make the MSQ optional, hence it becomes a sidequest. At which point your other ways to level efficiently is through leves, fates, or grinding dungoens which by the way most of the community in this game find quite boring. You do know that those MSQ's also hand hold you through every single mechanic and system in this game which is literally a giant tutorial to 50.

And you STILL haven't answered the question: WHY should the story be mandatory, especially when it's apparently so boring that people need to force their kids to do it for them?

Read what I said earlier about people who are only causally interested in FFXIV. You're saying it's better to deliberately turn away the extra revenue these people would generate because...why, exactly?

And giant tutorials are the bane of people who can figure out how to do things on their own. People who need the help can play through the "tutorial". People who don't can skip it.

Can ANYONE give a real reason as to why the MSQ shouldn't be optional? "BECAUSE ITZ GOOD XP!!!!" is not a reason, nor is calling it a tutorial.

MMOs that are more complicated to play than FFXIV have somehow managed to make the story optional and yet still have a thriving endgame...

Because by your logic, this means making the entire gameplay and content of this game is OPTIONAL. That I, as new players, can just ignore everything and do what I want. I can just unlock craft and gatherer at level 1, and go to 60 without doing any dungeons or msq, or any quests. Everything is open immediately, you get access to any areas, nothing is locked, I can go to endgame areas at level 1 if anyone would escort me.

Do you realize what this means? As gillsellers, they can take their level 1 character, spam those annoying crap anywhere, get access anywhere and jack up Market Board price, monopolize all materials availability and amass army of bots to produce materia factory. I am glad everything is gated. It is annoying yes to some people, but it is very much needed. The small percentage of players who quit because of this is so pitiful, they could not care less. Otherwise the accounting department would storm the office and demands changes because subscriptions drop to only 10% players left, 90% of the players quit because they have to do MSQ.

I know it sounds harsh to simply say "If you don't like it, just quit" but why waste time playing a game which has gameplay you absolutely hate? Are you the one who is being sadistic by forcing your friend to go through this? Why not just set them free to play other games that are more to their liking and play style. Let's not be a selfish egotistical and demand this game must turn into Sandbox game because I want all player to have 100% access to everything the minute they play it, since there are many other players who like the game as it is now and demand no changes to be made.

THE HORROR. How would you live in such a world where people could gather or craft starting at level 1? How could you survive in a land where someone made it all the way to 60 without questing? Actually, this is actually doable via fate/leve grinding so...?

Well, I don't make this game :) If you buy a Final Fantasy game, especially their flagship title (not some Chocobo Dungeons side game), it has its own set of rules. You either accept it as it is, or you don't play it because it is pointless. A waste of your time and money. In this day and age, where information can be accessed with simple clicks via your phone, you could get a reading if this game suits your play style or not. I know EOS is not my game, after reading reviews and talking to friend who play it and see it firsthand via "Share Play" on PS4.

Make up your mind then. Trimming fat in 2.1-2.55 is one type of request, most people agree that some of those could be made optional so if you bought 3.0, you can get there faster. Heck I can even agree that 3.0 is suffering the same fate of too many inane fetch quests, but that does not bother me much since it's free xp, and I need to explore these areas anyway, so why not kill a few mobs on my way, and kill several birds in one stone. Which is the way World of Warcraft is structure.

Saying you want everything optional and make all players have access to every content in the game so they can play how they want, that requires another thread :) Go make one.

I rather have a set run, or if you don't get the drop, you get generic token, after 10 runs with no drops (from any dungeons), exchange 10 tokens for ONE item from the dungeons of your choice. Once you clear a dungeons and get the drop, that said dungeons will not drop anymore tokens - this to prevent people spamming easy dungeons vs the horrid trio (AV, DD, and Sunken Temple).

FF14 version 1 is a big fat failure, it needs to be reborn. You just can't play the game in 1.0 and it was such a slog to go through. Again, I don't make the game. You should know what kind of game play you are getting into. This game is much more fun to play with friends, and yes I can understand the annoyance of doing MSQ, especially if you have alts like me. You just need to see it differently, it's nothing but "free xp for minutes of works", one of the many type of activities in the game for you to do. They are there to help you level up faster with minimum amount of fuss. Those quest and MSQ is also a great stress reliever to not have to deal with random toxic players in the duty finder. If I am gonna go explore the areas, at least give me some reasons to do, and some activities to do, as well as free xp for minutes of works.

Between MSQ, Quests, Levequest, Weekly Challenge, FATE, and dungeons, this game is perfect. It has great pacing to suits every kind of players. But trying to please everyone and giving (some) options also has its downfall, someone somewhere will be unhappy because there are some aspects of the game they do not like.

Yeah I made peace with it lol, you can just ignore the aspects of the game you do not like. Skip Cutscene is wonderful ability to have. Not participating in housing fiasco is another option I made, why bother with it, maybe one day when they fix it, I'll go try it. I don't have to do the savage or extreme version of any of the activities either. The token system will be implemented in Alexander raid it seems. Already in the game for Crystal Tower weekly quest to upgrade armor and weapons.

Just because there are aspects of the game I do not like, does not mean I have to stop playing. There will always be some content that is not for me, and that is ok, it is for other players who want that. And if you want that particular content, you just have to deal with it and do its required list of things to complete. Once you reach 60, everything else is optional and you cherry pick the content you want to do.

Unless that thing you don't like is, you know, the MSQ Gating? According to your own logic though, you should've quit playing rather than post about your displeasure, no? Contrary to what you seem to think, making the story optional doesn't mean there can't be an Elezen standing at the gate to Ishgard who says, "Oh, I'm sorry, I can't let you in yet!"

They've level-gated content in pretty much EVERY themepark MMO to date without needing to make the story mandatory.

What you said here is pretty stupid. If you are going to have it level gated anyways, why not put a story into it that actually levels you more efficiently than the additional content in the game. Which by the way is the MSQ.

Making MSQ optional, starting over with each expansion... this is a large reason why no other MMOs match HW in story. It's a breath of fresh air to actually play an MMO that cares about their story. No matter how much you plead for it, SE is not going to make the entire MSQ optional for you.

The way I see it, if they cave to this demand this begins a downward spiral. I've played MMOs for over a decade and I can tell you, in MMOs, the customer is not always right. Sometimes always listening to the customer causes your game to bleed subs. If you don't listen enough the same result can happen, a balance is required.

Doing away with the pointless fetch quests in MSQ is fine. Making it optional is not fine, as most of these dungeons and trials are directly tied to the story in some form or another, giving meaning for the players who actually read the story. Getting into Ishgard would make absolutely no sense without this MSQ requirement, and would destroy the lore for all of the people who liked the story. Either way one side will be unhappy, you can never please everyone.

And as near as I can tell, making the story optional will please everyone, with 0 relevant exceptions.

The fact is, a suggestion to change something can be considered on its merit regardless of how many cries of "BUT CHANGING THINGS IZ BAD!!!!11!" arise.

In this case, there's no reason to not make the MSQ optional. No one gets hurt by it, and some people who don't want to do it don't have to.

It's win/win, especially for SE who will rake in more money.
