Each day I do my roulettes in the DF in the hopes of connecting with someone and assuaging the yawning chasm in my soul that has slowly taken over my life over the past six months. So far no luck, although I daresay I'm looking in the wrong place.

@Kallistra, apparently a lot of mentors have been gaming the system on mentor roulette lately, dcing when they get a duty that's more time consuming to complete. So the party may have thought Selli was one of those. Anyone who know Selli would know otherwise! :P
For my own tales lately, last night I signed up for a mentor roulette and got a guildhest. That was quick and easy, so I signed up for another and got another guildhest. ^^;; Signed up for yet another and I got Lost City of Amdapor normal, which went smoothly from start to finish. Signed up for another on DRG and got Titan EX.
That poor group. We were at it for about 40 minutes and the group was up to 25% echo, making decent learning progress, but a lot of people kept making the same mistakes. Ultimately they voted abandon. So I signed up for another and got Wiping--er, Weeping City in progress; I was locked out. They wiped, we tackled Forgall again, got to the trash before Ozma.
I was on SMN and attacked the Void Fire add, got dots up, baned when the snakes appeared, got ALL the hate, tank never picked it up and I died. So I told the tank he was supposed to pick up those adds. Rinse, repeat, baned off the Void Fire, got hate, died... then the whole alliance wiped at the trash pull. Not sure if someone didn't stand on the side shield activator or what.
After the trash wipe, my party voted to kick the tank for afk, and he must have had a friend in there because he screamed obscenities at the alliance before the kick went through.
Well, I found something interesting in Weeping City:
http://i.imgur.com/vaLrgoc.png
Apparently he was there like that just for fun.
No complaints about that though, the little archer was apparently competent enough to never be in danger of dying. One haircut excluded, that was timed poorly with the hammer/axe plants, but that one got me too.
And the title "weirdest BLM rotation" for this week goes to the dude I met in Cutter's Cry today who never had more than two Astral Fire or Umbral Ice stacks although he was level 40 because his rotation was like Fire - Thunder - Fire - Blizzard - Blizzard - Thunder - Fire II - Fire - Blizzard. Congratulations, dude!
Reset Tuesday's evening Weeping City has been very educational. I learned the following things:
- I resent tanks who don't turn the Croc mobs around, that Critical Bite I didn't see took off 19k HP. I have 16-something on my MCH.
- Apparently Costa del Sol got literally translated to "Sonnenküste" in the German version for some reason. Thanks, SMN.
- Ozma apparently is called Jaspsis in German. Or something. I'm SO glad I play this game in English and not in German.
- Speaking of Ozma, Ozmashade does a second Assimilation. Haven't seen that even on release day so I had no idea it existed
- Three Void Fire appearing phases make me lowkey wish I were somewhere else
I took one look at the German localization of this game and my cringe meter almost broke.
Yes, the English script is far from perfect but way ahead of the German one.
Duty Finder for example becomes "Inhaltssuche" (content search), ugh. I need to stop thinking about it.
Well yeah, the "Sonnenküste" thing is awful, specially as the FFVII place is called "Costa del Sol" too in the German version, so actually "Sonnenküste" makes no sense at all although both names mean the same.
And Ozma's German name is "Yadis" in both FFIX and FFXIV ^^
Wiping city this morning...death everywhere..90 minute run...Alliance B had a healer that kept crashing, apparently their tank was his friend so when they kicked the healer I just assume he got salty because by the time we reached the last boss he kept purposely stealing aggro off the MT and killing people.
Jumped in to solo heal a Thordan party today. I've done it before and managed pretty well, but a combination of a series of bad Weeping runs and spending most of my time on my DRG alt had made my confidence a little shaky. The first run goes okay, but after that a series of awkward mistakes ensues, and on the final try, I was taking a lot of damage throughout before eventually dying again during meteors trying to heal a DPS who just didn't seem to be healing. Ashamed and frustrated, I abruptly left.
A few hours later, I log back in, open the character screen, and notice my gear is red.
...ohhhhhh.
Forgot to change classes before my friend queued us to get him and my other friend Weeping City loot (I like helping them, okay), so I went in there as... bard. I'm a bad bard and I knew it was gonna be wild but...
Long story short, to summarise this: Before I completely lost my nerves with the tank and vote dismissed them for apparently deliberately ignoring EVERYTHING, thanks to them the entire alliance wiped to the Headstone. I repeat: We wiped. To the. Headstone. And judging that no one used aggro skills in the party I was second highest dps in there on Forgall in my party. As Ilevel 215 bard with approximately 0 idea how to play it properly at level 60. Hoo boy.
Don't think I've seen the timer in Weeping drop below 30 minutes since release week. It did today. Welp.
Login, and try to finish up my leveling roulette before the reset. Go into Brayflox with my drk, a mch, drg, and a whm. The mch is one of those guys that uses blank on cooldown, so that's pretty annoying. We get to 2nd boss and when the queer bubbles spawn on people, the drg just keeps hitting the boss. The mch puts a marker on it but doesn't bother hitting it either. I tell the drg in chat to hit the bubbles, which he ignores. As we're running back, the drg aggroes runs through all the mobs for some reason and the healer actually starts healing him instead of letting him die and ressing. Healer and drg die. We make it back to boss, and the same scenario of the first attempt occurs except i try to break the bubbles when i realize the dps wont but i couldnt do it in time before healer dies again. We then vote kick the drg for ignoring chat and markers.
We then get a ninja..ninja runs through whole dungeon, and aggroes everything, whm heals him... they die.. again.. We get to the boss, and ninja does the exact same thing and refuses to hit bubbles regardless of markers and regardless of me telling him to in chat. We end up vote abandoning. This was the first time and hopefully the last time I've had to vote abandon a dungeon in roulette for reasons other than not being able to find a tank/healer. I did get to finish my leveling roulette on time with 8 minutes to spare. Unbelievable...
I have all the fending gear except for the chest and boots so I figure to go as a WAR to get dibs on them if they drop. This was my first time tanking and being a WAR figured I'd be OT. The other two were PLD. We get to the first boss and stand around for a moment and nothing happened. The SCH used Galvanized and I took that as a sign to go. I ended up MT the entire run. No wipes. Worst thing that happened was I lasered everyone with the face because I didn't go back in time. Shout out to the awesome SCH and WHM that kept me up.
Similar story happened to my mentor roulette, i changed myself into SMN (thinking i was a BLM) because i just upgrading their gears.. SMN is by far the only job i rarely use, i have not even use it aside from job quest and a really few occasions.. And to make things worse, i ended up to pharos sirius HM.. The good thing was, I'm aware of SMN basic skill of Bio ii, bio, miasma and bane.. But throughout the run i was mostly concentrating on rereading the skills tooltip to know how those skills work while the tank pulled a lots of mobs.. At the end of last pack of mobs I accidentally left garuda somewhere and the thing disappeared, just as i was using swiftcast to resummon it during that bazillion mobs, i goofed and wasted it on ruin I to a single enemy.. Despite my performance, i got a single commendation for an unknown reason..
I keep on running Wiping Shitty, as a healer, for healer gear. It took me 3 runs this week to get my piece. Of those 3 runs, at least 2 of them lasted almost 90 minutes.
Highlights from the last run:
- Went through 2 co-healers, both of them SCHs, neither of them knowing how to play the job. No Deployment Tactics (or if it is used, only used for Adlo and not for Eye for an Eye), no Selene, which would be fine if they could be bothered to help cleanse debuffs (they couldn't) and knew how to use Eos properly (they didn't). I don't think I ever once saw either of them drop a Sacred Soil.
- Third co-healer we got was WHM, who joined just as tanks pulled Calofisteri. So I ended up solo-healing Calo. And then Calo drops healer gloves and a healer jacket, the former of which goes to the WHM and the latter goes to someone else because I already picked up the hat. Great, so this WHM got to sit out for the entire run, doing absolutely NOTHING to contribute, and gets a piece of gear, while I've had to carry the entire party for the entire miserable past hour+, and for the other two runs this week.
- First healer quit after the first wipe to Forgall, tank pulls without waiting for a second healer. I ended up having to solo-heal that, and lucky me, our tank decided to tank 2 adds, because another alliance's tank went AFK and stood outside. It ended in another wipe, of course.
- At Ozma, where I'm eating the orbs, the alliance on our right sends us their orbs with a side of death-love, while the alliance on our left drops one of their meteors right next to ours. Half of my alliance gets wiped out, me included. Thanks a ton.
Sometimes the old raids are harder than Weeping City.
Labyrinth of the Ancients after queuing for 200+ minutes and 3 member withdraws.
I went as Ninja because I wanted the chestpiece.
B Alliance.
First-time bonus appears.
First boss, DRK (mentor) pulls boss. Does everything fine until PLD Provokes. And Provokes again. And continues to spam the Provoke macro.
I guess he really wanted to be MT.
At first boss, only our alliance fails to pull the adds away from the dragon and separately.
At Atmos, another alliance member begins the fight, triggers the 15 second timer.
Amazingly, all but 1 person could enter, but it was REALLY close!
But, only 2 people are standing on the platform...
Another Alliance tells some people to get on the platform. I am ninja, so I hope one of the ranged will.
No one budges.
So, I run over the platform along with someone else. Finally, the other alliance kills theirs, and we proceed.
2nd boss
keep in mind, we are Alliance B.
A Provokes the boss, because A gets buff first.
Our PLD Provokes it away.
Half of our alliance is attacking the boss without the buff.
(Just how many people here are first-timers? I thought.)
Finally, the buff comes to us and we attack the boss.
Bombs.
Our PLD tank Provokes our mob, and bring it toward the other mobs, instead of separating them.
Still, we manage to complete it without a wipe.
Behemoth
Another alliance member shouts "When behemoth stands up, hid behind meteorite."
Okay, everyone should know this. But I checked Party List just in case. 2 people don't understand Japanese, (only marked E at least), but player shouted in Japanese.
"Well, both of them should know it. Neither has a sprout, so probably it's not their first time here. (Spoiler alert: It was not their first time.) So they should know this anyway, right?".
First time behemoth does special attack, 3 people in party die.
Another alliance revives them.
2nd time it comes, 6 people die.
Only me and the DRK tank are left alive.
Now I wonder "How many people are first timers here?"
So we get to final boss.
Only 3 people were first timers. One in my alliance. I don't know why 6 people in our alliance died at Behemoth.
DRK Begins the fight. PLD immediately provokes off him. Why??
PLD is moving too much so it's hard to land Trick Attack.
DRK provokes off him and PLD Provokes back.
Boss prepares special attack, but some people don't make it and die.
2nd special attack wiped the raid.
Our DRK says he will MT. Like this "<---MT"
Okay, we try again. Same thing happens. Exactly the same thing.
So PLD says "Why did we die? Can someone tell me? Does anyone speak English?"
So, I explained the mechanics to him.
I figured he understands what MT means, so I don't explain that part.
So, the same exact thing happens again. (Our 3rd wipe)
This time, another alliance tank says he will MT in alliance chat, because I guess he doesn't understand what happens in our alliance.
SO, THIS time we finally all make it to platform and barrier protects us and we clear the boss.
And the chestpiece I came there to get drops!!!
But the other ninja won the lot.
And I got no commendations, even though I explained fight to tank and survived the behemoth.
I never got that with other tanks in those early raids always voking the boss. It seriously is one of the most annoying things to deal with in those 24 man raids, and it's usually a PLD too. I don't know why it's always a PLD, but thats how it is.
One moment in Labyrinth of the Ancients, during the first boss we wiped because people were killing the adds too fast thus keeping the boss in the middle wasn't the best idea. As big as an ass move this was, I strategically managed to lock out the two PLD's in one of the alliances and we managed to clear with flying colors due to me placing the boss at the edge of the map giving the DPS and Competent tanks the necessary time and room to deal with said adds better without dealing with this Provoke fest. While others in chat ridiculed me for being "impatient" and not waiting for "everyone" I was thanked by a member of my alliance for not only using that tactic but also locking out the headache party members.
It's moments like this the make me feel like this sometimes (Ironically, I was playing as a DRK)
https://youtu.be/oL7PSlUuWPs?t=33s
Bonus story, speaking of PLDs voking. I was running Void Ark a long time ago, MTing all the bosses, run is going pretty smooth until after pulling the last boss. PLD in another alliance decides to Voke the boss and take hate off of me and start tanking. "Okay." I thought "I'll just DPS, it's the last boss anyways." I don't think I even finished my thought when Echidna just used Sickle Strike on that PLD and just destroyed him. Needles to say, I resumed my MT duties and never delt with a tank voking after that.
Weeping City, my 4th run this week on bard because I want the boots, and a friend joined me on dragoon although he sucks at it (so he says). He was parsing to see how he's doing, told me how he's doing a lot of stupid mistakes, yet he was 5th in DPS, while I was 2nd, just slightly behind a BLM in another party. At Calofisteri, I was even top DPS - as a bard.
Later, we were running Void Ark on jobs we suck at - he was on bard and I was on machinist. We were 5th and 6th in DPS. Although we made really stupid mistakes like casting Iron Jaws without dots, or wasting ammunition on skills other than Split/Slug Shot. Just how can someone be worse than someone who doesn't understand his job. HOW.
And I still don't have my boots ;_;
Pretty sure I have relatively high dps in my wiping city runs.
I play scholar.
Ugh, same. I went into WoD after an hour and a half wait on Sunday, queued as DRK. I got in and looked at the two other tanks, both PLD with 120 swords/gear. I'm 235 with the Padjali greatsword. But I'm perfectly happy to OT, as WoD does have plenty of OT mechanics.
At the first boss, one of the PLDs runs forward, facepulls the boss, and keeps it facing the raid. First cleave blasts the whole unprepared raid. So I turned on grit, picked it up, pulled it center and turned it away from the raid.
The PLD proceeds to provoke every single time it's off cool down, standing right next to me and spamming RoH in shield oath the whole time. My static/FC co-tank was in there on DPS and said the adds didn't get picked up.
So I let them have the next trash pull but my co-tank tells me at the next boss, "just pull," which I do. During my pull the PLD tries to pull. At this point I'm like, no. And there's no way the other tanks can pull him off me unless I let them. During that boss the PLD stands next to me spamming RoH again in Shield Oath.
One of the other alliance tanks and a dps ends on on the platform with us during the Atomos trash pull, so that alliance was tank less. At Cerberus I tell the other tank to go for it, certain they won't pick up the Wolfsbanes. (I was right; was the only one tanking Wolfsbanes.)
At the final boss I decided to let them go ahead and pull the Cloud of Darkness, pretty sure at that point their healers would let them die so I'd be ready to pick up the boss. And I was right; however, my rando healers weren't any better and I died shortly thereafter. GG.
It quite surprised me, I'm leveling Machinist right up now and have done a few Vault Runs... and I always thought BRD / MCH would naturally suck in outputting Damage....
I'm not the best in in the Opener Rotation, I also do the thing you mentioned above, using Reload and using Hot Shot and Lead Shot... and everytime I think, Why am I doing this? Those are 2 wasted Procc Chances...
Warrior | Scholar | Monk | Machinist was the Setup for one of the Vault Runs.
I told the Group I really need to back out for 1-2 Minutes after the first Boss, nevermind that, they went ahead and pulled stuff.
Basically the other DPS brought a Mobs HP down to 75% when I came back, not using AoE, using only the first Ability from the entire Combo Sets.. the Healer already struggling to maintain MP (BLM Priest with four other Guys pulled, right before the Room with those Giants)
I can understand if someone is struggling while leveling up a Job, not performing 100%, like 50-75%, yet... spamming a single Ability, not using anything besides that and not getting Greased Lightning Stacks, is beyond my Knowledge...
The Scholar got upset by it and I told him it's fine, we just had done 2/3 of the Run already at that Point and the next 15 Minutes won't be that long anymore. Bite your Teeth together and go through it.
We managed to bring Charibert down, thanks to the SCH Stance Dancing and knowing the entire Fight. Afterwards the thing that topped it... the Unicorn dropped and the Monk has gotten it, which left even the Tank jaw dropping..
To be fair, the uses for deploying Eye for an Eye are rather limited, and WC doesn't really have any of those. Similarly, there are times when it's better to forego Sacred Soil in favor of using the stack for Indomitability, as you will end up topping the party up with the Indom, SS or not. In WC, that's quite a few of the situations, or using SS just is not really feasible (such as people spreading around).
Although based on your explanation, it was probably not them playing smart. Sounds like they wouldn't have used those abilities even if there was a proper time for them. No real reason to forego Sacred Soil for meteors and the gather together mechanic of Ozma, especially if the placements are bad. Or for Calo's haircarousel move.
Glad you got your piece in the end!
The only time I ever struggle with maintaining stacks is when I have to spam Energy Drain, hoping to get enough MP back. Usually just after I've been raised in the middle of a fight.
But yeah, these SCHs never once used Sacred Soil or Deployment Tactics, especially not at Ozma. All I remember is lots of Adlo, Succor, and maybe Physick.
I remember at Forgall, at one point one of the DRGs and the other SCH had Doom. I was busy healing the tank on one side of the room, too far away from the DRG to clean it off them, and I thought the other SCH would do it too. Nope. Ozma's bleed? Forget it.
Funny part about Calo's Dancing Mad: I threw up Sacred Soil for it, and pretty much half my party just runs out of it. -_-
Probably the most frustrating sign of a bad SCH, which I see everywhere, is fairy misuse. I use Eos throughout Wiping Shitty, except for Ozma, where I use Selene for AoE cleanse, and even then I'm seriously considering just switching to Eos. Rouse + Fey Illumination + Whispering Dawn is just massive free healing for everyone, and Fey Wind - which most of the time is the only reason ever to use Selene - just doesn't outweigh it for me. All the time, though, I see other SCHs just keeping fairies on Obey and only occasionally clicking Whispering Dawn, or keeping them on Sic and having them waste all their skills at the wrong time.
The fact I had such a hard time with this is more or less why I abandoned the job for AST. Keeping the fairy\\'s skills and movement commands reachable on top of all of my own heals turned into a finger tangling mess. It doesn\\'t help that I never had to micro my fairy ever until 60 content.
I tried to Provoke a Fleshy Pod in Totorak. It's too hot.
I laughed so hard at this! This made me remember one of my WC runs where my co-healer left the alliance A position (our position) and went to Alliance B to raise their healers. The poor guy never came back from the journey and I had to put all the HoTs I could spare on the party, sprint and quickly swiftcast Raise him before coming back. Since I raised him mid platform and meteor mechanics were next, he died again to meteor.
Tank in Aery would keep moving mobs out of summoner's and my Shadow Flare. Turns out he thought he was taking damage from it too.
We had to reassure him that friendly fire isn't a thing in this game.... :X
Posted in the gif thread but applies here too, MRW the other night i'm playing DRK and have a WHM (my 2nd job @ 60) cure me EVERY 5 SECONDS. And no esuna. No DPS at all... I mean the no DPS I could deal with, I was in Hakkuke & when I first healed that I did very minimal DPS but seriously... they only cast 2 spells the whole run, protect at the start and cure all the way through... maybe one medica on the last boss...
http://www.reactiongifs.com/r/wsod.gif
I'm not mad, i'm just really disappointed :P
Also - the SMN dps who I thought was going to be ok after they loaded in with Titan out, realised and changed to Ifrit. But no. At the last boss, since they and the healer are both sprouts and have been a bit iffy all run, I asked "Do you guys know what to do on this one?" waited... waited... SMN "y". D: "just checking you knew to turn off the lamps. i'll take that as a no" & pulled... just cherry on the top of a frustrating run.
I really dislike completely silent duty finder groups.
I get it, we aren't going to see each other again (and if we do, we will most likely have forgotten the names), but you can at least say hello at the beginning of the dungeon.
I've had countless DF groups like this over the course of the last few days and that's why I was pleasantly surprised during my level 50 roulette yesterday.
We got Snowcloak and we had at least one player new to the dungeon with us.
Two level 60s (one of them being me), a level 51 tank and a level 52 dragoon.
Not only did everyone greet each other, one of them even responded with "yes, please" when I asked if someone wanted small explanations for the bosses.
We finished the dungeon in no time and the tank thanked me for the explanations, /bowed and left. Got 3 recommendations.
Why do I even have to feel surprised to get such a nice party for once?
Why can't parties like these be the norm? Is it really that difficult?
I find silent groups amusing, in a way. It's fun to see how easy it is to complete a dungeon without communicating anything in words.
The alternative is the latest PotD party I was in, who started swearing at me and calling me names after I used a Fortune right before transference, on Floor 28. Even after I explained my rationale for doing so, and even after another Fortune dropped on Floor 29 and I used it, and no extra chests dropped.
Ultimately, those "people" weren't worth talking to, and my only regret is that I even wasted the energy in explaining myself.
I subsequently took much pleasure in tanking the Floor 30 boss (as a SMN, and no, I had Garuda-Egi out, not Titan, even), and standing right in the middle of the room to drop all the AoE puddles there, so as to cause them as much trouble as I possibly could. PotD is just a great dungeon for bringing the worst out in people.
I'm guilty of this one, but that's because I have no interest in making friends with you. Like I'm sorry, forgive me, but I don't. It's not like we can meet up after the instance and run again. It's roulettes with random people from other servers that I will never ever see again. So if your playing your class/job correctly, I have absolutely no reason to speak to you. Maybe some light chuckle conversation, but otherwise, I just want to get the dungeon over with as swiftly and quickly as possible, and stopping to take time to type can delay the dungeon from being completed faster.
Went into leveling roulette last night with a couple of friends, and we get Sastasha. Brand new sprout marauder, first time message, and obviously skipped the Smith's lessons given their crappy gear and lack of the newbie ring. After a couple of pulls, it's pretty obvious that the tank doesn't really know how to tank, but none of us know much about warrior tanking to help the newbie, so we just sort of adapt and overcome to finish the dungeon. I look the tank up, and they're on my server. I try to PM them some advice about going through the new adventurer lessons, but they never respond, possibly because of PS4 with no keyboard...? I thought that it might be a trial account at first, but then I remember they were playing as an au ra. Dunno, but I hope they took my advice.
It's not about making friends presay. I dunno I myself HATE silent parties cause it just screams to me " I'M AN ELITIST AND YOU'RE ON MY TIME" I had parties like that and thats what I will always think when people don't or can't take one second to type hi back. IT's two letters.... And I'm on PS4 so no.. controller is not an excuse. You don't HAVE to have a million minute convo nor interview them. A simple hi is all it takes in 99% of the cases here. I'm not attacking you either but I can only go off my own personal experiences and silent parties give me bad flashbacks. But I guess that's just my issue.
A simple hi is not all it takes though. Your asking for a hi because you want interaction. You want conversation. What is the difference between me saying hi, than not talking, as oppose to just not talking at all? Your seeking interaction throughout the course of the instance.
And in my experiences, I find silent parties do better. There's more trust among the players at playing their jobs. For example, the tank just pulls a size they're comfortable with, having trust in the healer. Which really should be an unspoken complement. If it wipes, they shrug it off, say sorry and try again. Mistakes happen. No need to make excuses for why the wipe happen, just go for it again.
I speak up and help when necessary like if I catch on that someone is struggling, but otherwise I'm silent. I have better things to do with my time, and I'm only running my roulette for the daily bonus like anyone else; so I just want to get it over with as soon as possible. Call it elitism if you want to, but I'm telling you that it's not that. Maybe it'd be different if I wasn't having to run the same two dungeons everyday for Expert, on top of the fact that I can't befriend you outside the instance.
So again, it's nothing against you or anybody else personally. I just don't want to talk. Anti-social? Maybe. Who cares. Unless I have to speak, I'm not going to. I only do so when giving advice. I'm not playing to rack up commendations. My silence should be considered an unspoken complement that you're doing fine. (Not to make that sound elitish, but it's the truth).
To me a Hi isn't asking for a conversation. It's just being polite and acknowledging the other people in your party.
I find it rude when others don't respond to greetings honestly.
This isn't really an excuse...
I also have no intention of making friends but I still say "Hi" and "thank you" at the very least. You know, basic common decency. Type in "hi" as you load in, and "thanks/bye" after the boss is dead. No time lost. If I have the time to type in "hi" in the 0.5 seconds loading in that my SSD affords me, you can too.
There isn't much difference between saying hi/bye and nothing at all. It might be slightly polite but that is about it. Personally I would not consider explaining mechanics much better. There isn't much room for being socially inside of the cross server runs due to all the grinding and actually it might even waste your time that you could spend being social with people on your own server where it actually makes sense to make friends.
My suggestion is to bring friends to the parties, you are more likely to have non silent groups that way... tho then I wonder if the other party members aren't suffering too much. It's kinda hilarious when you get in right in the middle of explaining that there was a random naked girl in your kitchen few minutes ago ^^
