This is the illusion of choice really because it's still tied to content they're not interested in. Exploratory zones can still have good rewards. They don't need the relics tied to them.

Okay let’s say we repeated the resistance relics, however you no longer needed to progress Bozja to advance them, the quest is immediately available in gangos, the step to progress all the way to DRN is removed and the timeworn artefact step is rebalanced so it has better options than DRN or bash your head against POTD
would you be fine with that, you can get your relic and never look at Bozja, but if I want to do Bozja I can also get my relic from doing Bozja
Yes, since players would have options available to them and would be able to engage with the content they wanted to while also enjoying the story presented in the relic questline. I can recognize that the tome method is kind of giving people what they asked for, but I'd hope next expansion things are a little more structured. I think most players are okay with specific options but just want them to be balanced and not heavily limited. The timeworn step is a good example of how not to do it. The raw emotion step after it did a much better job of giving players more ways to gain the items.
When this topic comes up, there's often the statement like the one I was quoting where the idea is that relics absolutely have to be tied to the zone. I even see people who have gotten kind of snotty about it saying things like "If you want the relic you have to do the zone and work for it". So in many cases it feels rather punitive. "You don't like the content I like so I'm going to make you do it if you want this nice thing that lots of people like". Like they want to both gatekeep the relic reward and punish other players because they like something else. But there's zero reason to make people go there if they don't like it if the zone is designed well and has good rewards on its own.
Alright so I'm going to have to restate what I meant.
When I meant tying the relics to the zone, all it meant was that the people who wanted to do it through doing the zone could do it that way.
If you wanted to go get your relics through Eureka, do it. If you wanted to get your relics through tomes, do it.
You would be able to get your relic without being required to do Eureka at all. Pretty much what supersnow suggested after me but with different examples and worded better.
Yep, a separate questline that stands on its own but offers a variety of options including steps where an option is exploratory zone content. Something like the crystal sand step in HW. You could adventure, you could craft, you could turn in materia, you could get items from levequests, etc. ARR and HW and ShB non-Bozja options also included daily roulettes at times. So you could grind X or Y to get it all at once or passively get completion on some steps just doing normal things.
One thing I think they did wrong with resistance weapons was that inside Bozja options were worse than out of Bozja options. Some out of Bozja options were guaranteed while Bozja options still had RNG involved. That made no sense to me. I don't think Bozja should have been better. They should have been equal in viability. I don't mind if they bring exploratory content back. I just don't want relic zones anymore. I want to choose to engage with that content if it appeals to me and find something else to engage with if it doesn't.
I was agreeing with you until you started speaking about making it like WoW. I wouldn't mind the giant fates (As long as you Opt in like Level Syncing Down but "Join Fate" instead. My real main issue is Open Dungeons, as far as I'm aware that's how that High Level plague spread and I wouldn't want that to happen in XIV.
YES! Hard agree, I don't find the exploration zones too terribly entertaining- I like running dungeon/trial content, not fate farming (I haven't even finished Eureka at all because of it. That and despite me asking for rezzes roughly about every three and a half minutes, nobody came to help me when enemies K.O.d me while trying to get story parts done and I De-Leveled 3 times from it.) I like the Tombstone Idea as a break from Eureka/Bozja, but I also think should have added the "Collect Items" thing that people like to make sure it wasn't quiet as brain dead as some people say.
I wouldn't mind exploratory zones coming back for the relic since it is optional content you can choose not to engage with if you don't like exploratory zones. I'd rather have a bunch of varying zones akin to how Eureka was setup and then add in a bunch of new "raids" like Bozja added. That being said, if they wanted to add in a way to get the relic outside of exploratory content too, that would be fine as well as it gives different options for the way people want to grind out the relic. I just want there to be something to do other than daily roulettes to get relics done.
