I absolutely agree that Sony let it go for too long before they ever even addressed that it was an issue.
However, I don't know what responses they could have given. Since the problem was a Sony one would people have been any happier if a rep popped up every few days to rephrase "This isn't our fault, Sony is working on it"? That much communication isn't going to appease anyone who's upset but it can easily have the unintended consequence of having everyone read too much into it.
