Well, usually...
Well, usually...
Missed opportunities imo, like the cooking part (dw no spoilers) they could have done something fun with that, using the animation from CUL... but nah, go to 10 million checkpoints, come back and watch a cutscene.
First half was very very boring, second half of MSQ is a lot better but there's still heaps of pointless checkpoints and conversations.
dungeons are 10/10.
Definitely, the fights are the highlight of the expansion. I hope that they keep them that way throughout the coming years.
I've been here since 1.0 and ppl didn't even complain this much about that mess. At least those of us who stuck around were able to still have fun and waited on patches with excitement.
I am already done on my main, but I was angrily pushing through on an alt today and realized today that if I even bother sticking around for this full patch cycle (I tried WoW during the EW lull and it feels much better than DT) that I will likely be spending it without any investment in the story for the first time in 14 years. Add on top of that, the incoming 8 man looks horrendously over stimulating to my adhd brain so I will just not be partaking, making it even worse. And being a huge fan and long time player of FFXI, I am going to be super critical about that and if they mess it up its going to drive me even further away. And from what we have seen so far, I have no doubt that they are going to mess up their Vana'diel "tribute" to the point of near blasphemy. These new writers just do not have the chops, if they are even real ppl and not AI, cause they sure feel like AI in many ways.
Same here. I'm really worried the raid will turn out rough, especially with the horrible ending they gave the 12. Everytime I see an NPC in the game say the 12 and or refer to their favorite sailor moon guy I just think.. oh poor guy, no clue you're really praying to a big ol' machine.. such a shame.
I can only imagine what they'll do with the Vana'diel saga if it's this team of writers from the MSQ. Gah I hope we don't have an annoying guide through the dungeon... please just let us go through it.
So wow the end credits even annoyed me... I just kept saying shut up... >_<
I skipped it. That Smile song is the worst song I've ever heard from this game. Nothing about that song sounds like it belongs to any expansion or the base game. It belonged in a Disney movie.
I truly hope so. Like you FF9 is my favorite Final Fantasy of the series and I haven't even mentioned how frustrated I was in the story with how poorly they handled those references. Just name drops with nothing else. Albeit, that's how they usually handle these sorts of things, but it felt like such a rich final fantasy and they wasted their chance with it.
I couldn't stand the song in the end credits. It was so annoying and useless. Didn't feel earned in any way. It felt corny and out of place. Had to skip.
So yeah I'm done with the story and to be honest it wasn't one for me. I'm happy for anyone who thought it was great but imo it was bad and full of clichés. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, we just followed Naruto everywhere.
The only thing I actually enjoyed was
The area in the forest (nice callback to the Macalania Forest in FFX btw) and the story around the Skydeep Cenote (althought the "bad guy not really being a bad guy but is truly a crybaby with a heavy burden and that justifies his terrible actions and/or attitude" is quite a big cliché in of itself).
Also, enjoyed little Gulool Ja. A shame he's only used to push the "sins of our fathers" cliché, once again.
So yeah, didn't really hold onto the rest of the story. Nothing stayed with me and that's a shame. I didn't feel a huge rush or urgency or emotions while doing the last boss. It just felt like a chore really (althought the mechanics were cool).
Yeah this kinda annoys me too.
The entire spiritualism of the lore has become very mechanical in nature, there are no real gods or goddesses and even then the spirituality disappeared after Heavensward. I think I would of preferred if the gods and goddesses were never personified because all we got out of it was lore being made redundant and honestly a very boring ARaid series.
Underwhelming? More like snore fest. SB all over again but worse.
I'm hoping they don't screw up the ff11 raids with the collab or involve wuk lamat somehow the ff9 references I felt weren't great considering it was just a few names and music tracks from 9. I was optimistic about dawntrail but after completing the story I feel it wasn't that great and the music was a step down and didn't have the final fantasy sound to the music. I still have hope for the ff11 raids that they don't screw it up somehow since that's one of my favorites along with 9 and hope they bring in the original ff11 team to co-develope.
Yeah one thing that really annoys me with mainly japanese rpgs is that they kill the spiritualism, "kill the gods" "gods bad" not everything needs to be revealed, not everything needs an explanation, you can just have gods you pray to, you don't need to know whats beyond the veil, you don't need to explain every bit of magic in a Sharlayan classroom.
It is a jrpg problem but I will say it does extend to other MMOs too. For example in world of warcraft one of the main religions the holy light got personified in these creatures called the Naaru which were made of pure holy light. So now you kinda see all the spirituality of the priests and paladins as praying to a weird alien creature. It really ruins the atmosphere.
I for sure think the Japanese obsession with killing gods and explaining gods/gods bad is really cringe.
Having the Holy See and all of Ishgard worshipping Halone was a neat cultural story telling device for Ishgard but it's now ruined to me because I directly met Halone and defeated her in battle. Hell as a Paladin we are supposed to be followers of Halone too.
I think spirituality is honestly one of the most important parts to fantasy. What makes Lord of the Rings so magical is the spirituality in the world and the wonders it brings. Knowing everything that happens in the background of a fantasy world removes that wonder.
the song probably wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't done as a southern gospel choir type song... also the lyrics sounded familiar, however with Erenville doing his exposition of tell not show over the lyrics made it completely annoying for me. which btw don't get me wrong I do love me some Erenville but even then when Shb ended as well as Endwalker... when they showed those endings they didn't have that type of exposition along with music with Lyrics in it.
It's not a distaste for spiritualism, it's just a cultural and religious trope. A lot of folklore in various east asian religions revolves around spirits and gods being born from normal people. They sometimes go corrupt, and have to be killed by heroes who sometimes become gods themselves.
I can see the argument about demystifying the FFXIV pantheon, but I think that's kind of what the game is all about at it's core. The scions are made up of almost all uber-educated scholars above 99% of the world. The group started as the "circle of knowing" and most of what we do involves trying to turn magic into a science.
I really tried, really hard, to go with whatever emotion they were thinking they were conveying in this story but... I couldnt.....
Forget a vacation, this is literally a babysitting gig and the only one whos got to have any fun was Estinien.
story wise Emet is having a laugh right now and im not happy about it.
the sad thing about this, with all the story's faults/problems, unfortunately it feels like whoever decides this localization/direction stuff for this story invited a bunch of their friends ill equipped for such a massive game and because everyone will just use ''insert tern/words/etc here'' and say you are a idiot for not liking x perfectly and praising their work as gospel.
and the main people will charge will just go to twitter and pull the same things the Star wars and Marvel people do and insult everyone.
^ What this guy said. Gods in Eastern mythology are rarely Judeo-Christian omnipotent creators or even Zeus-like figures, they are often ascended mortals who reach a pinnacle point in their journey of cultivation, very Taoist based. Look at all the "sennin" type gods in Chinese lore, half of the Heavens used to be "great sages" who left their mortal coil.
Mixed reviews is an understatement. 76/100 critic score on metacritic and 7.4 user score and dropping. That critic score is even lower than ARR. Lowest yet.
Well since maintenance is happening, I can post my so far review. Just wrapped up the last feat and can so this MSQ is a missed opportunity...
How did SE allow the WoL to become nothing more than a background NPC, mentor to Wuk Lamat. I would have rather been traveling with Gulool Ja Ja as we search for the City of Gold and uniting a fractured Tural along the way. Tuliyollal could have been like Ishgard restoration, the further you go through the MSQ the more tribes join the city.
Instead, we are stuck wondering why we should care about Wuk's bid for Dawnservent, who has shown little character growth since the journey began.
Because that is LITERALLY how the underlying world building is constructed. In this particular universe there are no gods, all gods are creations of mortal instrumentation, that is just a fundamental building block of this game, like how every magic is aether. There are no other magic types, just different facets of aether, same with the gods, they are ALL just faith powered constructs. To suddenly have a true mythical god like say Zeus would be the weird thing in this universe. If that is off-putting to you then you need to consider switching games.
AGREED!!!!
Why they grabbed this character from XI and then made him a dying old man is beyond me. They could have had us vacationing on the Isle or whatever and get caught up in a brewing civil war that pitted Galool Ja Ja against Wuk Lamat for control. Or really, ANYTHING other than what they did, and it would have been better, and it would have been a better redemption arc for the Beseiged boss than making him a weak leader who doesn't just name a successor.
But again, this game has no identity and it shows. Almost none of their OC are any good, the one they plucked from another game is the more compelling character. If they are going to grab stuff from XI, they should give it the respect it deserves.
Just finished the game...
Bar zone six and Wuk I liked everything else...So 30% of the story is good the rest is bland to right out bad.
I sadly have to reflect the same sentiment as most others. I did the level 99 trial last night (Brilliant fight, and the music goes soooo hard, Soken has gone nuclear in DT) ..and outside of maybe the end of part 1, beginning of part 2 where I THOUGHT it was going to start to ramp up a bit... it doesn't. Didn't think I'd be even more bored doing the narrative than EW, but man, SE proved me wrong. Dawntrail has helped me with something I have been thinking about for a while. For the first time in my FFXIV lifespan, after 2 expansions of not liking the narrative, I will now no longer be watching cutscenes. Hope my ESC key is up to the task!
I am enjoying Dawntrail as a whole though, the gameplay is the best it's been in a long time.
Im not gunna lie, that ending credits song is so bad, I'm wondering if it wasnt Soken or if he was high.
Especially when ending credit songs previously have been songs we've actually heard before and hearing them at the credits hits different, This song came out of nowhere and has vocals while Erenville narrates, actually bad song and bad implementation.
I read an interview or article a while ago, don't even remember where, but in effect Soken also get his directions from the narrative team on what kind of music is wanted where, so I wouldn't blame the last song on him; to me it rather fits the overall direction of this expansion. But I wasn't a fan of that one either - though I would have possibly liked it more by association if I'd been satisfied with the ending and coming into the end credits with the usual buzz of a great story well told and experienced. This time I was more than annoyed at the last trial and the bit of scene afterwards, and then it was already over and everything was happy and everything was once more about Wuk Lamat. That definitely didn't match such a happy song. It would still not have been my genre of music otherwise, but I suspect I'd have been a lot more lenient.
Overall, I absolutely loved the soundtrack; not every track would be my favourite, but it had some stand-out pieces and a lot of very-well-done ambience in my opinion. I also happen to usually overlap with the genre tastes in this game, that's just lucky for me and very subjective, and for the most part that continued here. Loved the jazz as always, loved the synth rock, always love hard rock when it arrives, loved the implementation of vaporwave in a thematically fitting zone, etc. But what I thought all throughout since sometime in the first zones was: Normally, the music is not only excellent on its own, but it also underlines the narrative, the mood, it gets mixed with events and zones in my mind, to form this whole matching experience. This time, the music was still great, but I wished I could care about what was happening, too.
Hmm Endwalker was criticized for lacking content. Also from what I heard in game and sharing the same opinion, Tural is a much nicer setting (vibe-wise, content is yet to be seen) for that expac and the post-msq.
Also it's a classic case of unhappy people being more vocal than happy ones, and due to our dear confirmation bias, they find other people sharing the same opinion, which is fine, until they start claiming things as if it was a community-wise opinion. This forum being a prime example of negativity
As from personal opinion, I didn't like Wuk Lamat for the entirety of the first part of the expansion, however I was fine with that game taking time to set the continent and its tribes. I found them pretty likable as I am taking my time, doing all the small quests available, giving more depth to these tribes, I thought it makes them easily on par or above with some fan-favorites (carried by being in other games). I also enjoyed there being small questlines, gathering up in another one when finishing the multiple questlines of the sub-regions of an area. However, for people hoping for the story to quickly pick up and be as fast paced as the last 2 expansions were, despite all the warnings from the devs, were just hoping for something that was announced wouldn't be and still disappointed because it wasn't this way, storytelling-wise, there's always a calm period in between two story arcs, but if anything, taking its time so correctly set things up is a sign of a good incoming story arc. I was also mad at Krile for taking G'raha's spot, but that's only because of my ongoing bromance with my bro lol.
So as for the first-half laid back part, it filled the job and expecting otherwise would have been misplaced expectations. Hoping to continue on EW's momemtum would have had it reached a ridiculous point where most people's suspension of disbelief would be broken.
As from when the story starts to pick up... It had good and... meh writings (and I'm still not a huge fan of Wuk Lamat). It clearly wasn't all good, although not warranting such slack ~but nuance isn't a thing on internet anymore~.
So in the end, a very enjoyable expac in a great environmental setting for the inter-expac period, with a good yet not up there MSQ, which however is solid enough to be the start of a new story arc. Oh and the soundtrack was amazing.
Not to belittle your opinion but most people say that the problem is Wuk Lamat.
I'm in the camp that the story itself, while having glaring pacing issues and plotholes was an interesting concept in itself and the overall thing going on was fine, even though I hate stuff like the rubber bullets or the trial writing. Heck I'm probably one of the few people who actually liked Bagool JaJa and his story.
Most of the ones complaining are annoyed by Wuk Lamat being shoved into every single second of the story.
Normaly I would also agree with that vocal minority take but this time it's really not just this forum here. There are sites that are normaly so positiv and protective of the game ripping the MSQ appart and even the japanese forum is extremely negative on it with more or less the same complaints this site here has. I think it is more half half right now with the MSQ dividing the playerbase in two.
Again, it is fine to like the MSQ and it's great to voice that opinion but I am tired of some people trying to bellittle complaints as "vocal minority" or "transphobe".
No actual scion tension
Kidnapping plot was rather random and pointless (she was somehow overpowered by common bandits, just go with it)
The pop song when they're assembling the train felt almost satirical
Alisaie's most meaningful contribution to the story was her 50k HP Vercures in that one dungeon where she can be a healer
Bakool Ja Ja is totally going to face reckoning for his act- oh, the credits are rolling
Zoraal Ja's parents don't seem to care that he went apeshit since they aren't seen again
No idea how Zoraal Ja managed to have a kid where he was (almost expected to see a "it's him as a kid" thing)
For that matter, Wuk Lamat's mom also doesn't appear to exist
(INB4 that stuff gets crammed into post-patch content)
There were a few noticeable things that stood out this expansion: the especially high number of FFXIII enemies, the paradoxical trend of anti-melee dungeon bosses continuing from post-EW, and the fact that most of the children in Tural are Mamool Ja. Like the other races are just still giving birth to adults.
I mean in a way this felt like a very XI expansion, we were just following some random girl (Lion, Prishe, Aphmau etc) around for her story. No one I played with ever played XI for the story--most people only progressed as far as they needed to unlock sky/sea/salvage etc. People only went farther when they started offering bis pieces of gear as a completion reward. FFXIV is a very different game so maybe don't take your storytelling cues from XI?
Galool Ja Ja did make me a bit nostalgic for Besieged though, so there it that.
Ummm..... yeah.... no lol idk who you played with, but this was a super unpopular opinion in XI.
So so so many of us loved the story and you never, ever followed some girl around who was constantly in our face and talking and talking and talking like we did with Wuk. They were much better written and only around when it was necessary. We did most of the expacs without them around. Not to mention, this is a controversial take for most ppl who are crazy hateful of XI, but the XI stories were much better than the XIV and many of the single player FF game stories. DT....is not lol.
