It's completely mind boggling to me that they'd even consider pulling something like this after the fiasco they've dealt with during 1.0. Gender locking a race is never acceptable.

yet another +1 for making an account just for this thread
for everyone whos making fun of people saying this is done because of homophobia - i would recommend you ask yourself why a company would actively refuse to make "sexy" male characters (unless they can somehow make it into a joke, like the male bunny outfit) or "manly/unattractive" female characters.
also, in case you think the LGBT+ backlash against all of this is silly, make sure to /tell your local roegadyn females and catboys wearing pink or skirts and ask them how many times they got harassed over the kind of character they play in game.
I'm only saying this because I find it interesting to know, and maybe some insight to help those of you who don't know this out. They made Hrothgar connect to the Ronso, which is an existing race from Final Fantasy X, specifically a character named Khimari Ronso, who fits the exact same design (lion type humanoid). It's not just some fur slapped on a Roe, it's technically an existing thing that has no real info other than that connection, so I am curious to see how that develops...
As for the Male Viera situation, I do agree that it seems a bit odd that they would do this sort of thing, considering the Lore excuse doesn't really fit too well. Also, if it's in concern to not wanting to finally reveal what Male Vieras look like, than that makes no sense either since they have had enough chances to do so. It makes me very sad that we all as a collective, who pay a fair amount for the game, expansions, and sub fees, should be given a little more of what we ask for. I always thought I was of a few who wanted to appreciate the male Viera in this game, and I may have gotten my hopes up a little more than I should have, knowing the stigma behind it all. The fact of the matter is, no hate or disdain towards anyone or anything, but I hope that, if not now, that one day soon we will be given the male Viera as a playable race, and more development will come forward as to the connection of the Ronso.

372 likes in just a day is pretty good
yeah, the more people see this thread, the better
not just on twitter, either
reddit, facebook, youtube, whatever
most people can't be bothered to check the official forums, or to register for the first time, but if they really want male viera, they will make this exception
so keep talking about viera! may this thread never fall off the first page, at least not for long lol
I think they Disappointed me several times with this.
Making only female Viera makes it dispointing to me, as a player. Not to even see the males as a female of the race is not exactly Immersing.
Will we even know what they look like.
But also with Ronso, First. I am disappointed with the males. They do not look beast like and do not look like someone designing from a beast like place. They get the heads and the tail, and some fur, But not a beast like race at all.
The lack of females for them is a massive let down, as its likely we wont see another race like it now.
They just look like they got the go ahead to be the male race to go along with the sexy Viera. Since they do not care about the viera more than that :(
When they do single gender races, they need to put in more work to make it work. It needs to be some of there best work to make it feel natural and part of the world and i just do not think they are doing that.
Sometimes its more about perception of what you are doing than specifically why you do it, But i think with this they have burned away a lot of my good will with them.
I wont be unsubbing, as i was going to be playing a female Viera. But to not see males is going to be weird if they do not show up at all in anyway. They are a Important part of the race identity no matter how rare they think they should be.
I wanted to stay away from actually posting in this forum until today. I am very disappointed with how SE just wanted to be quiet after all those silence. That silence made people to be excited over having male viera in Tokyo fanfest. However, he did give big hope to furry lovers, of course. Yet I am very upset. We live in 2019. Can we see something different from generic cute sexy girls and masculine strong men? Why can't we? I have been crying for cuter boys but not like lalas or miqotes. I want something cute and masculine at the same time like the design that they gave us in the concept art. I always had disappointment on aura's works also. Why can't we have something much more like the concept arts we had? Why are we going so much more on "SEXY WOMEN" like races and primals and "BEAST MASCULINE" races and primals? Can SE can think much better and flip the thoughts much more creative?
Just created an account on the forums to voice my thoughts. I recently took advantage of the Twitch Prime deal to start playing this game, and ended up getting way more invested in it than I originally intended. I plan to play for a long time now, and I'd very much like to have a player avatar that represents what I would like to play as.
I've been holding on to a Fantasia since completing ARR specifically to change into a Viera; I've always loved bunny aesthetics, and so it was an easy choice to make. The problem is that I want to play as a male, specifically a smaller, cuter, more effeminate male race. None of the options given other than Lalafell (which don't appeal to me at all...) really fit the bill on that, leaving me with no other option but to play as a female. I'd be fine playing as a female Viera, but seeing so much discussion and disappointment really woke me up to the fact that male Viera could and should be a possibility for a playable avatar! Lore is a very flimsy excuse to use when you write the lore itself, and by saying that "we can't include male Viera because they've never been seen before", SE is the only one forcing that statement to be true. This could very easily be the game where they're first seen, pushing it off forever 'just because' seems like a weak idea when they are established in-universe as a people who do exist in the world, and can be seen, even if it hasn't happened yet.
Most of the whole alternate universe/different races in the First arguments have already been made, so I won't bother restating those. This is a very big +1 from a new player, who wants to continue to enjoy the game for as long as possible, hopefully with a character and race that satisfies my wants and needs!
I don't have much interest in playing Viera myself, but I do know lots of players who are bummed because they won't be able to play a male Viera, or to a smaller extent, a female Hrothgar. MMO's are all about self-expression in an online world, genderlocking severely limits the amount of creativity people have to create a character that they can bond with, identify with, and feel comfortable playing as. I don't think any of the FFXIV team means any harm and I fully believe this issue is happening because there's not enough time to create 2 full races with both male and female options in a single expansion. I know Yoshida said that this will be the last set of races we'll see, however I do think the FFXIV team should still work on bringing male Viera and female Hrothgar to the game before they decide to stop bringing in any new races.
Yes yes yes yes to male Viera! If Hrothgar are to be playable in the game, then I call for female Hrothgar too! (As well as better models...I'm happy for those who like them but the male Hrothgar models look very crude imo). I am more upset with gender-locking period than I am with the specific lack of a playable male Viera. I don't like the implied/enforced stereotypes, no matter how many lore fallacies or other arguments against the missing gender-race combos. It doesn't look good without them in any situation. <3
+1 to male viera!
Genderlocking races is so lame. Are we really living in 2019?
I've waited so long! But they gave me great disappointment and sorrow...

every like counts

For me i think the same, I would not be personally using male Viera. But to see them in the world would have been great. And when it comes to Hrothgar i am not getting something i want in them anyway, so i will still be wanting a beast race in game.
But i do want people that like them to enjoy them. But its disappointing not getting one thing, and then another when i feel i am not really that hard to please. Not getting both sides to one of the races, I did not even think was a possibility at this point. So it comes as a shock.
I also found out from the WoW forums. Which makes me think, maybe the devs should have been working like WoW is doing now. With potential races getting just a little bit of extra work at the start, to make them ported to a player race much more viable.
i think shorter sweeter males might have more of a chance with these alternate version of races
like the fat miqotes we might get small males and large female au ra's
could even lead up to instead of new races we get alternatives of our current races
You got my support. I was trying to ready myself for disappointment, but I guess the needle still stings even if you anticipate it beforehand. I hope they change this in the future. Ideally within the next year.
Edit: To be clear, I don't mean I expect a fully functional character model in that time, just confirmation that they're making it.
Kicking my social anxiety in the butt to include that I agree that genderlocking is complete balogne. Really depressing since this is my first ever MMO that I ever actually stuck to for more than a few days and this whole going back to genderlocking races is a complete turn off. Don't want to quit mind you I've literally have nothing else going for me but still.
hey thanks for posting
I know there's probably a lot of other people out there like you who prefer not posting on a public forum, but I really hope others make an exception for this thread. It really does help
and to all you introverts out there, if you prefer not posting, that's fine, but leave a like on the first post if you want male viera
+1
i (or we) want a stable playble race, so it not just 'male' and 'female' only.
make it like Au Ra, we got a pair of them at the start of Heavensward.
i just gonna say im 'okay' we got 2 different race at the same time at a expansion. but, yeah.
we need and want Male Viera AND Female Hrothgar.
i know it is not easy to implement a new race, but,
i believe in the Dev's power to make FFXIV an even better game.
thank you.
Please, make it real... I wanted to be a cute Viera couple so bad with my boyfriend... T_T
I'd settle for Male Viera with taller Miqoete as base model atleast
I don't normally post on the forums but hey, this is important to me so I wanna say something!
I'd like to see both male Viera and female Hrothgar. FFXIV is my favorite and only game I'm able to play and I was hoping to finally take the leap into a new race but it looks that won't be happening now with the given options. The biggest let down in this situation is that I feel like I was given false hope with the announcement of Viera and no confirmation if there would or would not be male. Pushing forward another race entirely that isn't all that different from what we already have in the game and also genderlocked only added to the disappointment and feeling that I had been lied to. Even if we can't be given the missing genders, I would at least hope we can have a better explanation than using "the lore" as an excuse.
I hope every bit of input in this thread and the many others in the other languages get read and considered. Thank you to anyone for reading this!
Whoot! I was like 400!
I've discussed this issue in depth with my daughter, and though sad with the state of things, we've decided we're going to wait to see if SE addresses this issue further. We'll then decide if we want to support the game further (purchasing the expansion, fatter cats for all the family, etc.). I'm also confirming she wants male Viera and female Hrothgar too: inclusivity, not exclusivity!
I agree with the cause but not with those who will stop playing only for a reason that I think is futile compared to the entire expansion. Everyone is free to do whatever he wants, but really, does this seem like a valid reason? Apart from that I'm with you for the Viera Male
Any reason is valid reason to stop paying for something, its hard to say how important some things are to others. And why something is so important to some and not others :) Things like this are close to a make or break for me, much higher than a new class.
Its not that its the only thing, but its very high on my list. And if it was not that i had such high regard for the team, and SE for the game as a whole this could have pushed me away enough.
What's to address? Males got Hrothgar, a race that is so much more complex visually than Viera. Theres no exclusivity, it's just two different race designs instead of 4. Yoshi P specifically said that they wanted to meet two different demands (that were both equally vocal on the Viera thread), but they don't have the resources to make 4 race models, so this was the compromise that ironically means that everyone gets what they want in terms of race
I would like them to be unlocked, at the latest by 6.0. I'm hoping for something like the FATE artwork in the OP, but I would also be open to this:

Are there any polls up yet on the topic?
Except the people who wanted beastly ladies, or not quite as beastly guys. Myself, I was looking forward to a slightly more built, fuzzy instead of scaly Au Ra.
Also, while aesthetic has a lot to do with it, races also come with their lore and contexts. That sort of thing matters to a lot of people, either they're into that sort of thing and it increases their immersion and enjoyment of the story, or they're into roleplay.
I have been looking forward to this since Viera was confirmed. Please give us male Viera.
The point is that the idea is to please as many people as possible. I hate Viera and have no interest, and was so sad when they said no new race after 5.0. now with Hrothgar I'm a lot more happy with the race diversity and choices that players have. Male viera and female Hrothgar would be welcome and there's no problem asking for it, but don't pretend like their absence is problematic.
Someone is always going to be upset. If it was male/female Viera, we would have people complaining about SE pandering and that this is end of XIV. If we got male/female Hrothgar, people would petition for Vieras inclusion more (like what happened after heavenward). Right now we have both races and people complaining about gender exclusivity like it matters.
You get two race models, I'm sorry you didn't get the exact specific one you wanted, but at least you got the race you wanted added to the game. The way the Devs have done it means that as many people as possible get that.
