I hate Asahi the most because he is completely repugnant in every way. Zenos, Varis, and Zephirin can all join him in rotting in hell too.

My original answer was Minfilia, and I still stand by that, but Venat is an easy #2. The only reason she isn't #1 is because she was likeable in Elpis whereas Minfilia was never likeable. We're also done with Venat, whereas with Minfilia I question if we ever will be because she keeps turning up like a bad penny. Both suffer from the same positive narrative treatment and your character can never express any dislike for them. I don't know what it is that anything involving Hydaelyn is like that. I don't particularly like Krile either and I wonder if that's part of it.
I've yet to go into Endwalker, and while he was more bearable in Shadowbringers, ARR - Stormblood made me absolutely despise Alphinaud. I got so sick of watching that arrogant literal child fumble every single thing he tried to do on our behalf or make stupid choices in general, spend half an expansion crying about how much he screwed up and how he'll do better next time, and then proceed to eventually majorly screw up again.
Why were we constantly letting this person make the strategic and diplomatic decisions again? Just about anyone else would have been better.
Agreed - definitely one of the negative aspects where he is concerned. For me (and with the fact I'm realitively new and am in the early part of Endwalker at this time):
- He has NO personality beyond 'bored manchild' and psychotic obsession with the WoL.
- I hate that he is presented as being OP to the point where he literally dies but manages to come back to life through some really flimsy 'sheer force of will' type line of reasoning.
- Oh look, he has a massive scythe now.... and that's supposed to be impressive? I'll concede that there are players who did find this impressive (reaction videos) but, from what I can ascertain, some of this could be afforded to the fact that it heralded the introduction of the Reaper job. Personally, this just indicated that I have another fight against him at some point - something I have absolutely NO interest in.
- My only real thought where he is concerned is that I want any part of the game that involves him over and done with so we can move on with the story
And it doesn't help that he often appears subsequent to positive story elements - just saved the word? Wonderful! Now here's Zenos to remind you not to celebrate too much.
To be honest, every time the game does anything that involves him I just sigh in disappointment. THAT is the sort of 'character' he is - the sort who makes you think "aw, not him again"
I know this will bring nerd rage but Y'shtola. Just never really warmed to her and her space is filled by Urianger in my mind. Sorry sorry.
Cid
I hate this whitebearded, self-rightous, narcissistic fool! Doesn't allow for any other engineer than him, especially if it's another garlean (Nero). Once there's an engineering accomplishment that's not from him, he claims it. Builds an entire company to feed his narcissism. Well... and I have also something against disloyalty, which he presented when abandoning his garlean brethrens.
If all expansions were equally great, Shadowbringers would still triumph because no Cid.
Was there a chance who to kill off, I'd immediately place Cid in front of the canons and delete his existence from the lore.
Eh, Zenos is only a mirror image of the player if, well, he is a mirror image of the player. The game seems to at times desperately want to portray him that way but the player (and their individual character) are undefined. so an actual proper "mirror image" is impossible. Just another reason Zenos is a complete failure and waste of space as a character.
It was Alphinaud until 5.4 then it was G'raha still don't like Alphinaud but G'raha tops him now
I think that hits on the problem, though. Not everyone plays games for the same reasons or in the same way; and they really do have to break the metaphorical fourth wall to accomplish it (mainly when he asks whether you enjoyed your journey or whatever it was), which again, different strokes for different folks with that sort of stuff. I don't really enjoy that kind of thing much and I suspect that's what's coming through when people express dislike of him. It's not enough to make him interesting to me.
Och, Zenos said, that he does what he does only for this reasons: to feel something, excitement, this one moment etc. Is it really so different to an average FF14 player? And now imagine how an average garlean citizen would see the Warrior of Light: a slayer, who killed hundreds of Garleans only for excitement. ;) There is only one real difference between Zenos and the Warrior of Light: Zenos was always alone while the WoL has friends and allies. :)
I also do not like Zenos but mirroring the WoL in that kind of way i find it interesting. :)
Cheers
The fundamental flaw in a character like that, though, is the lack of insight required to make it work.
What is his Endgame? Lets say he gets his 'one moment' - then what? He returns to sitting on his throne being bored?
(I'll note that I've only just started Endwalker and therefore am not aware of whether or not this point is actually addressed)
