I'm sort of wondering if this will end up being true. We have to take into account they only have one Mana Regen move, as opposed to WHM now having two. On top of this, WHM is getting a new reduced Mana proc on Medica, and also has its Freecure, whereas AST only has the instant cast without any changes to MP cost.
While I agree the Mana costs do seem quite friendly, I wouldn't be surprised if MP management became a thing for ASTs too.

I disagree I believe AST is the Ford pinto in your analogy. It's the station-wagon/SUV for those who can't afford to have a Full-Truck and Full-Size Sedan. Whm's calling out "woe is m" when core skills(excl. SS, traited protect) have been unmolested for the most part is to say the least ... puzzling.

P.S. Heck we didn't good look at Protect/Proshell Changes
for all I know they could be going from

There's no enhanced proshell. Were getting "enhanced" medica to replace proshell and it's shit.

Protect - Now increases MDEF as well without trait. (Everyone can cross class this now. Nothing special to WHM so cast your own buffs).
Proshell - Replaced with Enhanced Medica (Just.. wth? I hardly use Medica. Useless trait).
Enhanced Medica - 20% chance Medica will cost half HP
Stoneskin - Damage absorb from 18% HP to 10% HP (Again, cast your own Stoneskin now).
Quick Stoneskin - Replaces Graniteskin. Lowers Stoneskin cast time to 2.5s
Stoneskin II - Damage absorb from 18% HP to 10% HP (Only thing about keeping this is that it's AoE but still meh).
Presence of Mind Spell speed increase now 20% (Just.. why?).
Aero II - DoT potency from 40 to 50
Holy - Deals unaspected damage to all nearby enemies with a potency of 200 for the first enemy, 10% less for the second, 20% less for the third, 30% less for the fourth, 40% less for the fifth, and 50% less for all remaining enemies.

Maybe read next time?

People keep talking about the PoM thing and not noticing that Spell Speed also increases the potency of HoTs and Dots now. Remember Selene's buff? That's 3% now. Considering what could've happened, we did OK, and it's turned PoM into something we can pop like divine seal to boost the power of things and not just when we need to spam spells quickly. There was no way it was gonna let us double our spellspeed anymore.

For stoneskin, the 18%->10% is because of the change of Graniteskin to Quick Stoneskin (easier to precast for Tank Killers, but weaker because... SE says it needs to be)

because of the changes to Skill and Spell Speed affecting DoTs and HoTs, originally PoM would double spell speed, so the changed it because they didn't want you to have Med.II and Regen to have Outrageous HoT bonus' from SS... or they just hate WHM DPS

To add to this point, does anyone know how much MP AST has compared to WHM? SCH already has lower natural piety compared to WHM, but a hell better MP management with Aetherflow; if AST's MP pool is less than WHMs, then the lower cost of AST's spells won't do much for them.

They might be expecting the AST to rely on the 20% MP redux card to make up for the lack of more MP regeneration skills. However, like all other AST cards, it's random and unreliable. Using it also means not shuffling for a 10% DMG redux or 10% DMG increase.
