When Final Fantasy 11 first came out in the USA it was not uncommon to see groups of players fighting all over the place. There were hot spots of course. But the world still seemed alive with other players working together as a team to kill monsters.
My comments are meant to reflect the pre-Abyssea days. Final Fantasy 11 has dramatically changed over the years... and leveling up is nothing like it used to be. And I believe people moved to Abyssea because it was just more efficient. I don't think it had anything to do with the fact they didn't care about the open world.
And I am not "obsessed". I just miss the old days when there was an incentive to exploring the world of an MMORPG and leveling up as a group, rather just soloing everything with a few instances on the side.
