Blizzard literally went on a raging simplification spree. Notably pruning and removing tons of abilities from each class and specializations in the name of "accessibility". Pruning and dumbing down existing jobs is not in any way acceptable, and is an insult to players who main those jobs. If you want to make something simple, then you need to create new jobs that are simple from the beginning - period. People are invested in their jobs and you're actively disrespecting their affection by making changes none of them asked for.

By all means, continue to remove abilities and make the game play itself. You will not gain more subs; but you will lose half your player base from your arrogance.

So there we have it. Possibly 3 out of the 4 said to remove Kaiten because majority ruled LMAO.

One thing to note though, and I saw this in the past on the forums here more than once from players on Japanese servers, is that the JP try things because the developers put the content out and put effort into it and they feel they have to try it. You don't see that as much on NA/EU. So it's not a matter of doing nothing in the game. It's that NA/EU choose the content they're interested in and spend time doing other things while they're in the game that interest them more than Savage.

Considering that Tera currently has an average of about 20 players a day this month after Gameforge announced the shutdown of servers at the end of June 2022, one cannot say that the game was super successful in drawing players with its gameplay. The downfall of TERA was not due to class design, but rather a series of decisions that went back on original promises of the dev team. It was originally promised that modding tools and add-ons would be allowed for the game, only for the devs to take away the ability to use such on the game and actively punish it, resulting in a sharp decline in the population since such were used both in high-end pvp and high-end raiding. This was followed by them adding gender-locked classes and race-locked classes to the game after saying they wouldn't do that originally, followed by race-locked classes that were exclusive to the Elin race (imagine a new class being added to the game but only lalafell could use it). It was this that drove down the game's population and the rest is just natural decay with age that happens with KMMOs like this, I'm just surprised the game lasted as long as it did tbh. Maybe it being really easy to max classes in that game (by grinding notorious monster equivalents) and having incredibly satisfying combat are why its managed to limp on for this long? Either that or the Elin, but I doubt a couple of whales could keep a game running by themselves. Hell, Divine Souls, another mmo like so was able to limp on and continue being hot-potato'd between developers for years because there was just enough potential profit in it on the combat front alone.
But none of this had anything to do with job design, in fact the new jobs were well-received gameplaywise, the main complaints were the fact they were gender-locked and race-locked. And as a game like that with a notable RP base and hard content base you kind of don't want to do shit like that which would piss off veterans, especially something like nuking addon use (In fact TERA is a good example as to why Sqeenix shouldn't do that for FFXIV). The cancellation had to do with job design.
At least, that's my understanding of it as someone who played for a few months and has checked up on the game every now and then.

I know this is difficult to comprehend for the crowd that simply won't accept any criticism about Final Fantasy XIV, but I'll try to make this as simple as possible: no one is asking for a 90s clickfest with six hotbars on their screen. We're asking for job identity to be respected, and playstyles to be untouched when they were already fine to begin with. There's no reason healers should be the way they are now when they were most perfect between Heavensward and Stormblood, but subsequently gutted to the point that AST and SCH don't even relate to their story quests and lore anymore (old card system, Selene), nor should useful and/or iconic skills have been pruned when skill bloat would have been better dealt with by merging combos into single buttons like PvP has been for years, and dropping left behind crowd control skills—a far more efficient means without stripping away everything people cared about. Bard isn't even a bard; it's a glorified archer. Dancer, while at least letting you dance occasionally (something BRD has always failed on), has too many RNG attack skills and not enough support. Why can they rework SMN to be an actual Summoner true to the series, but not do either of these the justice they also deserve?

Currently, the only jobs that still have enough going for me are tanks, and I constantly worry how long it'll be before they too, are crushed under overbalance and needless streamlining. I already miss things like stance toggles as-is. A story alone won't be enough to keep me here, and I sincerely doubt I'm not the only one.

All of my questions about SAM's loss of Seigan, Merciful Eyes, Kaiten, the Fuga/Fuko cone, etc.; MNK's bizarre (and far from feeling true to MNK) NIN/MNK state; the continually worsening condition of healers; and more answered in one comment.

While half the playerbase leaving might be an exaggeration, a decent number will leave and move onto other games. However, I think FFXIV sub counts will still do well because new players will keep coming into the game to replace those that were lost.

while end game is everything but playing the game like most games eg: house parties , glamour etc etc ...
gone are hard core mmo's its either casual or pay to win ( of which ffxiv is not pay to win ) there is no way its going to lose half its player base not even a 3rd will leave unless something truly amazing comes out !!

even then like josh strife hayes stated in one of his mmo vid's community is what makes a mmo fail or succeed .. people are less likely to move to a new mmo while there friends are playing one that they have invested alot of time in to
i have left it for a few months to a year but always come back because its a solid mmo !

Thing is casuals are the majority and raiders are the overwhelming minority. The people here on the forums are not even a tiny fraction of the silent majority who just enjoys the game.

So it saddens me to tell that to people but the game will do fine even if half of the crying (!) playerbase leaves the games behind forever. Raiders don't pay the bills anyways, i know many who just login into the game every 4 months to raid the current savage and then leave again.

The game is made for casuals, that was the core philosophy of XIV from 2.0+ on cause look at WoW and look at what happens to an MMO when it just has his only focus on the raiding scene.

Most raiders ARE casual.

Your personal dislike for 8-man content does not suddenly force an ultimatum upon the entire playerbase. It does not force players to obsess over or loath some fourth of available content.

The game was "made for casuals," too, back before it had any easy mode. Back when the first two endgame 4-man dungeons were actually a challenge for some people.

So, did XIV just utterly fail at its "for casuals" goal until... just recently? Hell, will they not have reached that goal until every raid has no enrage, no OHKOs, no real conditions for success except enough time ground away, despite that having no consequence if, as you propose, "casuals" cannot raid anyways?

Modern WoW, meanwhile, is the opposite of an example of a raid focus. The most raid-focused the game has ever been... was in Burning Crusade (Jan 2007 - Nov 2008). The majority of additions, including the various forms of AP, have been to give casual players something to (the the devs' minds, enjoyably) progress outside of raiding, or as catch-up mechanisms to seasonalize (and thus devalue) reasons to raid.

The addition of LFR? Literally the opposite of hardcore raiding. Dailies? World quests? Are we somehow going to chalk those up to "raiding"? The addition of Suramar? Pure story content. What was the point of Argos, Nazjatar and Mechagon? Essentially, Exporatory Missions -- casual stuff to do and by which to shrink the gap between those who raid and those who do not. Islands? Casual side-content. Essences? Collectibles with fun powers attached. Covenants, as opposed to just using Tier Sets or an additional row of talents? For, first and foremost, casually progressible storylines.

Outside of one difficulty setting --Mythic, WoW's equivalent of Ultimate-- it has progressively made raiding less and less a focus of its content since its first expansion while widening more accessible and less mainstay content in turn.

XIV attracts way more people who don't rush into the latest savages and ultimates but rather casual players. And there you have the reason why SE is catering to casuals more than to the hardcore raiding scene. Not to mention that casuals don't go into hibernation after every raid and actually pay also for other things while really many raiders are only into raiding which is not where the money lies for SE.

Edit: These hardcore raiders are also those who cry about all the jobs getting to easy and casual. While the silent majority just goes with the flow. So thinking you (not you you but the hardcore raider base) makes half the games population and with SE catering more to casuals they will kill the game is beyond hilarious.

That argument still makes no sense, why should you put development time into something that is enjoyed by only a small fraction of the playerbase?

Just speaking from a economical standpoint here, i mean i would also like harder dungeons where healers have to actually heal and SE butchered my main job machinist more times than i can count but i try to see the things from a logical standpoint. SE wants to make investors and shareholders happy and putting effort into a really niche part of the playerbase might not be lucrative enough, that's why we see that they lean more towards casuals.

And i don't think that will ever change since it's a downward spiral. The game attracts with its current philosophy more casuals than hardcore raiders. As long as the players who really enjoy hard content are not getting overwhelming in numbers the game will continue to dumb down. Not the direction i would like but the numbers clearly speak for themselves, they have success with their methods and you can't deny that.

And? That still doesn't mean anything when looking at the overall numbers of players. The amount of japanese players on one of their servers is insanely low compared to western servers. Japanese worlds have all the time 1/2 the population of a NA/EU world and often even only 1/3 of the population.

And the clear rates for NA/EU are WAY WAAAAAAY lower than the japanese ones which might be a cultural thing (Japanese players seem also to stick more with the game) but i admire you just picking the highest clearing numbers you could find just to make a invalid fake argument for yourself.

Back in ShB EU/NA had like 3,4m players and japan 1,4m. With all the western streamers making the game more popular on the western market that difference nowdays might be even higher, by a lot.

So i am sorry pal but your numbers don't speak at all for themselves and especially not for you.

It takes dedication and talent to be able to constantly contradict yourself, move the goalposts and still think you can afford the aura of passive-aggressiveness.

You mean if they wanted to do something other than raiding. Often times if they're only here for raiding, then they only want to do hardcore content, and nothing more. You cannot cater to those individuals, there's absolutely nothing you can add to make them stay for more than the raids.

I'm here for the story and friends I've made. The gameplay is only 1/2 of the battle for me.

we don't just simply want more buttons we want more thought that goes into pressing the buttons and maintaining class fantasies. Having nuanced difficulty to playing jobs at a high level optimizations to do planning to do using abilities in interesting ways. Not just making every class be so similar that the only difference is the weapon. While you may not be interested in that the content is so easy and requires so little of you that it literally doesn't matter for you. We just want them to stop removing abilities and making changes that literally appeal to no one that actually plays and enjoys the job.

If there's any korean MMO I'd suggest for them, it'd probably be Dungeon Fighter Online (DFO). Lots of unique classes (sadly gender locked), but man is the gameplay fun. I only quit because the grind was getting to be a bit much for me.

FFXIV seems to be doing just fine. I gotta say, the latest changes have made me come back and level another character. I mean another character, on another server, not just another job. Thats one more sub they wouldn't have gotten if they had just rammed another super-twitchy ultimate through.

You know, not everyone has to cater to the hard core. Sometimes, those of us who want a fun experience will also drop some dollars on that. And that's okay. I don't begrudge you your experience.. but don't begrudge me mine.

That fraction I would say is probably about 1/3 to 1/4 of the players enjoy the hard core content. That's a pretty hefty fraction. I think the big mistake many casual players are making is comparing savage raiding in FFXIV to Mythic raid in WoW where there was only about 2% - 5% participation. WoW mythic raiding is a niche thing, a lot of players do not want to do through the raid 4 different times on 4 different tiers of difficulty.

Focusing all effort into a niche part of the game attracts a niche demographic of gamers. If anything it would only hurt sales not improve them.
Imagine if you will, they revamp pvp again, to be a FPS, and it attracts lets say 5 million new active and consistent subscribers. Do you think the game would benefit from suddenly shifting focus to FPS and dropping things such as MSQ, or alliance raids simply because the players that prefer the FPS PvP is greater than the over all players that enjoy the MSQ.

In reality though your view point is highly skewed to cater the game to the way you want the game to be. Which is exactly what you are stating that the hard core end game players are doing. It's an example of the pot calling the kettle black.

Except for healers the buttons are supposed to be the challenge, because mechanic wise there isn’t much there. The mechanics for a healer are supposed to be healing but they aren’t so we’re left to press one button for 90% of a fight. There’s no defending it.

Because you need variety. Most games make a bulk of content for the average casual player, in our case it's MSQ, Normal raids, Alliance, Dungeons, Glamour and so on. Normally you'd then have a variety of niche content for different playstyles, PvP, crafting, gathering, harder combat, different classes and so on. This was the case in ff14, but more and more the developers are trying to take the niche content away from the enthusiasts and give it to the big crowd of average casual players on a plate so they have even more to do.

Let's say for example you have 100000 players who just like MSQ and Normal mode stuff. You then have 20000 hardcore raiders, 10000 crafters, 5000 PvP players, 5000 gatherers and 20000 who play jobs that are more complex and rewarding. You look at the numbers and all the other activities besides MSQ and easy content has a low participation rate. So you decide to rip that content away from the players who loved it, dumb it down and hand it to the casual crowd.

Now you have 100000 players who dabble in everything! Participation for everything has jumped! Looks great! ...Until you realize you still only have 100000 casual players, haven't really gained more and over time you're slowly starting to bleed the 60000 other players who were spread across various niche activities.
The casual players have short attention spans and never really liked PvP or crafting or such in the first place and you made the content fast to complete for them, so they get bored and play something else very quickly and are difficult to retain.

Casual players don't need niche content or classes sacrificed for them. They'll rarely quit just because they don't like the niche activities, they might complain occasionally, but generally they keep playing because they get the bulk of the content either way. All you do is shed the players who found various things to get really invested in. MSQ and Normal content isn't enough for them. Your participation rate may be through the roof, but your playerbase won't expand because of excess simplification.

Just how much expansion are you imagining is possible for these types of games? This isn't a new niche, and is probably already saturated. Infinite expansion just isn't a reasonable goal.

No, I think I will begrudge you yours. People like you who combat requests for job complexity by reducing it to "muh buttons" are the reason every job is braindead. EVERY job. Every job at this point behaves similarly and has an extremely static rotation, or none at all. If they want to split jobs with some of them being more difficult than others then it'll still suck for those of us who want to actually think while we play, but it won't be THAT bad because then at least we have something for us. But right now, we don't, so it's no longer as simple as that. And your comment about the challenge being in the battles doesn't work the way you think it does. I will remind you that savage is something you only do once a week, meanwhile dailies are composed entirely of content that gets facerolled and is pure tedium for people who aren't challenged by """expert""" dungeons. Why should we "hardcore" players not have more repeatable content for us? It wouldn't detract from your content! The game wouldn't be truly dumbed down if they were simply expanding content options in both directions, the problem is that it's only going in the direction of casuals now.

If you're going to come in here and say "I know the game got more simple over time and it's no longer the game you enjoy, but I enjoy it so stop complaining" then you can't claim you "don't begrudge us our experience" that's not how it works. All you're doing is saying that we don't deserve to have content we enjoy as long as you can get yours, how is that not begrudging our experience?

With this argument you could remove all jobs with four exceptions: tank, healer, range DPS, melee DPS. ;) The jobs are useless when they do not vary and there are no differences between them.

Do you not see how this type of thinking is incredibly exclusionary towards everyone? I don't have the time to dedicate to doing Savage or Ultimate in this game anymore, nor do I particularly want to slam my head against a wall for hours a night trying to get a clear. Should I just not be allowed to enjoy any of the battle content in this game because I don't think spamming 1-1-1-1-1-2-1-1 is the pinnacle of job design?

If we give jobs more depth, people are able to have fun with them in all content. If you make them boring, you force people to have to treat this game like a second job to get enjoyment out of the battle content. Because it's casual content, you'll be able to "free style" and "play my way" while I'm able to try and get better at my job and we can still clear because casual content isn't designed around doing top DPS and minmaxing your job. Why shouldn't I be allowed to have ONE job in this game that appeals to me on the role that appeals to me and I consistently play in every other game? There is 0 justification for why every healer is as boring, repetitive, and poorly designed as every one in this game is. If the only fun comes "playing with bad players" or "doing the fights day 1 when nobody knows the mechanics" that is embarrassingly bad design that punishes me for not playing this game all the time or right as patches come out.

Let people be able to have fun with their jobs having depth instead of trying to force them into playing content they don't want to play. "Just play Ultimate" or "do Savage" is an awful and condescending thing to say to a player when this playerbase consistently swoons over how "casual friendly" this game supposedly is. I'm sorry I don't have the time to do anything but roulettes anymore. I guess I don't deserve to have fun with this game at all, right?
