Sorry, by further sectors I'm referring to those that will be released in 4.4 or 4.5. It was only the last 10 or so sectors that had the surveillance requirements for airships. For now there is no minimum requirement to reach anywhere.

I'm also fairly bad at understanding schematics and putting the "perfect" sub together, is there someone who has the "right" setup for getting the new items. My setup seems to not be very correct atm :)
If you're only concern the rare items, all unkiu has high surveillance and decent favor. You'll still be fighting with rng, but that should open your chances at the good stuff. You'll be sacrificing retrieval with that build though, which means that you'll get low quantities of anything like materia/materials.
Not sure if this was known before, but I just had a sub with full Shark-class parts (30 surveillance) unlock the 3rd submarine slot for us. So I guess surveillance is not required for unlocking that?
Anyway, as you might tell from my noob sub, I'm very unfamiliar with current best practices. Can anyone suggest some good builds for our 3rd sub?
Does anyone have any submarine builds that seem to be working on a regular basis to bring back the marine wax? We snagged two on our first and second trips there and now our ships can't seem to get over a C rating and return nearly 1000 Rubies Diamonds and Sapphires by now.
Our Current ships I have us outfitted with after trying to figure out how to do it:
Ship A: Unkiu Hull, Whale Stern, Shark Bow, Shark Bridge (Always C rating)
Ship B: Unkiu Hull, Whale Stern, Shark Bow, Shark Bridge (Always C rating)
Ship C: Unkiu Hull, Unkiu Stern, Unkius Bow, Unkiu Bridge (Has gotten A once)
I have tried to read through the threads for here and for airships to understand the stats and balances needed for good builds for different things (yields, rares, etc) so is it just luck at this point?
The last two waxes that I've gotten have been from C rated ventures, the wax was the first and only item and no further items were detected from the sector.
Ship A: 110 Surveillance, 70 Retrieval, 60 Favor
Ship B: 100 Surveillance, 70 Retrieval, 75 Favor.
I've been working on a Submersible Log Database based on the Airship Log Database by Neri Feralheart. I've been using it myself to make sure it works as it should, so far seems fine although some of the exp calculations in the master voyage log seem a little off as well as survey/travel time calculations in the trip planner sheets (these were also slightly off on the Airship Log Database due to some randomness between sectors.)

My build is Unkiu everything, except for a Whale bridge. That results in 90surv, 55retr, 70 speed, 130 range, 90 favor.
The goal of the build is to go slowly after minions, music and other rare drops. I've been running them on a 5-stop route since I made the upgrades to them a week or two ago:

I've gotten a couple minions after I changed to the above build, and then a two or three of the marine wax. Still have yet to see a colossus slab, darn S-E RNG.
The survey/travel times are pretty easy to get exact with a speed 5 sub:
ex - going from Ivory Shoals (2) to Cobalt Shoals (12), the travel time in minutes is row 2, column 12 value divided by sub speed (the same travel time exists both ways, so you could also use row 12, column 2). So the time of your journey of Ivory Shoals to Cobalt Shoals is [(0,2) + (2,2) + (2,12) + (12,12)] / Sub Speed (this time is in minutes) + 12 hours (there's no return to base time figured in after the last zone, but there's an arbitrary 12 hours added to every journey)

Why wouldn't it be a good idea to use every whale part ?
i don't think the capacity is there for a submarine to be comprised of all whale parts. you have to mix and match some pieces.
Unlike airship parts, submersible parts jumble the stats between teirs and the whale parts combined have extremely low surveillance which you need a higher amount of if you want a chance at the rarer items (pets, music sheets, rare materials).
Should be just under the limit if you really wanted to go all whale, but unless you want to be swimming in materials that have been around since HW there's not much point to it.
Which is really quite sad, some of the airship models are very pretty when you build the entire ship - but they are quite bad when built that way it would seem. So until we get airship and submarine "glamours" we will have to settle for the model ones :D
What is the suggested setups for rare items? I've been running 115/55/45/130/70 for a couple weeks now and I've yet to get any rare items or get anything over a C rating. Is it suggested to only send to one location at a time or multiple?
a lot of rare item acquisition is rng dependent on the weather/turbulence conditions when your sub reaches the sector. For example for Colossus Slabs, you hopefully should get one if the report said the seas were clear and calm.
btw I've been trying to conjure up certain builds that don't overlap parts and was wondering what you guys think of these 3:

I assume the first stat listed is surveillance? If so the second two set ups may not be worthwhile after the next set of nodes is released. I'm expecting a min surveillance requirement similar to airships.
Surveillance is also your chance of discovering items so a low surveillance seems like it would be self defeating; no point going anywhere if you can't see anything to get.
Low surveillance isn't that bad if you're after the common items. With high retrieval you'll still end up getting two big wads of viviantines or junk materia most of the time.
Yeah that's what I thought too. Unfortunately there's not a lot that can be done about the other 2 builds getting severely nerfed surveillance without going about builds using multiples of the same types of hull/rigging since it gets slashed by shark parts. I may have to give up on the idea of trying to make 3 builds using unique parts for each sub.
I don't think the part wear matters at all, in my experience. I have over 30 vessels, and 5 are subs with the good builds for the rare items, and I get Marine Wax Esters, Colossus Slabs, Auriea Polyps, Abyss scrolls etc. whether parts are fulling repaired or depleted after a mission. I dont repair til they are damaged, cause you can send them out as long as they arent damaged, no matter how low the bars are. This way you get your most bang for your buck. I understand what you are saying, but I don't see it reflecting item RNG at all.
Can you recommend a good build? Right now I have two rank 30 ships and all 3 tiers of parts built. I'd like to be able to mix and match the parts that I have between the two subs for max benefit until I can build enough optimum build parts. Which leads me to my next question: what is the the current optimum build?

Speed is my dump stat because I work alot and don't really care how fast they move.
Favor is nice but not a priority.
I like Range to hit more sectors but my primary focus is Surveillance and Retrieval to get the most out of each trip.
There's a lot of RNG involved with what the subs/airships bring back, good luck with your ventures.
Since weeks i sent my three submersibles to the spot for collussus slab and i get all but not that item. Anyone has similar experience or a tip how to get that? :D
Remember to send your subs out on an uber mission asap. The 5 highest ranking destinations give the most exp, and will probably unlock the new zones coming out Tuesday.
