Yeah, it "looked" great, but graphics isn't the only thing that carries a game... with SOME exceptions. It's gameplay. And from what I've seen of 1.0, it was just slow and not dynamic at all. No wonder it went the way it did.

Anyways, it's moot now. But since I've upgraded to the PS4, I'll go ahead and agree with letting go of PS3 development. It's not needed anymore.

True. I started on ps3 as well and went to ps4, what a huge change... crazy. Faster loading, graphics, ui looked better etc, it was like a new game tbh. And yah I do agree, how current ff14 could been instead of what it is not, is another story and wont discuss it in here, since it's not on topic. But yes, fully agree with ya!

I am glad the next expansion wont be on PS3. So then we can move on to better things.

The thing is. Drop PS3 won't mean we will have suddenly a lot of character customization, open world areas, a diferent gameplay or that. Game will be the same, but with some more stuff on screen, like more HUD layouts, more players at the same time, more models and textures, or a little bigger areas. They wont change the way the characters works, neither will change graphic engine (The FFXIII one).

Do not expect bigger changes, that won't happend.

I think mostly load times here are the huge factor. Because PS3 user's load times affect anyone entering a dungeon. We just sit there for a few minutes waiting for them to load in...

That is to say nothing of the effects on the PS3 user themselves. Such as making it to hunts because of loadtimes, etc.

I had a SSD on my PS3 and it made the load times fine that people weren't bothered.

ARR don't use Crystal Tool. 1.0 did.

But yes, they will not change the engine again without another rebuild.

I don't think players will expect bigger changes (at least not any more than they do now) , but I think its safe to expect less excuses and more developer freedom. I'm pleased with the variety that the devs have tried this expansion (for better or worse, they tried at least), we had diadem, Lords of verminion, deep dungeon, aquapolis, and more will come soon. All I want is for yoshi P and the team to have more breathing room on what is possible within the game, and to utilise this freedom (Inb4 airship battles)

I do think PS3 is holding back the game. Im pretty sure that's why we don't have tons of customization for character creation and more customization also in game period. Now let's just hope they won't come up with other excuses to change or add things when they will stop supporting it

The issue has been touched on by the devs before i believe, and it mainly due to how the japanes player base regards console upgrade compared to western market. The western market is fast to embrace new consoles, with a quick uptake on upgrading the ps3 unit to a ps4 unit. The japanese market is slow to embrace new released consoles and sticks with what we call "last-gen" for a substantially long period of time. This means a larger proportion than expected of japan se players still use a ps3 to play games like FF14, which leaves a conundrum for the devs: keep supporting ps3 keeping the revenue stream intact from these players, whilst using this money to create the content. Graphical changes have to be made on a platform by platform basis (ie pc gets direct x 11, 3.3 brings enhancements to ps4 only) and having some memory issues server side (i am not sure if this is due to ps3, but people seem to attribute it to the ps3). OR cut off ps3 support, potentialy lose a large amount of revenue from ps3 players not upgrading to ps4, lose a large amount of your native countries playerbase. BUT then people get the memory issues resolved, the graphical issues resolved and then the devs can start experimenting with different styles of content that were held back by ps3 memory issues.

The ps4 is not holding the game back, maybe the ps3 is in regards to memory issues and graphical issues, however this is offset with increased revenue from ps3 users, allowing for more content to be developed.

One thing is clear though, without console release and support from 2.0, this game would have been no where near as successful as it has been.

TL;DR its yes and no.

PS3 is definitely going to drag this game down if they don't cut support for it in the near future. PS4 I don't feel will, it runs decently enough as is and can only get better when Sony pushes the PS4 Neo. That being said, I still prefer to play on a PC.

They need to drop the PS3 and upgrade the servers ASAP. I'm so tired of hearing about limitations!

With the all instanced content like dungeons, trials, and raids, there is a lot of data transferring going on. SE can't have too much data, so stuff like Character Customization has been simplified. :B

Except that...it's not. We don't have customization because the dev-team and the playerbase had stated that they don't care about customization since only the most efficient path matters. Blame the players.

That's not true. Just because some things can be left out for the PS3 players without much issue doesn't mean that it's not holding the game back for everyone in other places. Some stuff can't be toggled off. World sizes, mob/player density, character customizations, neighborhood sizes, etc.

Do you even know what the PS3 can do ? It already has games with far bigger worlds and customization than anything FFXIV and the vast majority of PC-only MMO already do.
The real limitation is not the diversity of what it can do, but the number of characters/monster it can display at the same time...wich is already different between PS3, PS4 and PC.

When the dev-team talked about limitations, they frequently mentionned a server-side problem, wich has nothing to do with what system you're on.

As someone else pointed at, that's not true. Do you notice the extremely low resolution textures on armour in cutscenes, and even in details on walls/floors and so on? It's due to the PS3. A googled a bit of comparisons and it seems that all platforms use the same textures, but with different levels of AF applied (and a much nicer rendering resolution for the game itself) to make them look nicer but no amount of AF can make pixel art look good. They could release higher texture quality for PS4 and PC, but catering to each platform is likely too much work, more than they want to take on anyhow.

Not entirely, it's also due to the lowest common denominator PC specification that allows even older laptops to run the game. SE smartly set the bar low on performance to widen the audience, that is not entirely the fault of the PS3.

Took a look at the minimum specs and you're right, both listed GPUs are under 1GB of VRAM (and FFXIV seems to use more even on standard laptop settings, at 1920x1080 anyhow). Though with at least 1GB of VRAM they should be able to push armour textures further, rather than the PS3's shared half a gig memory. Regardless of how ugly the armour might be, even WoW manages a respectable armour texture resolution with the newer sets even on subpar systems.

Indeed. But if they wanted to do an HD texture pack, I'm sure that they could. In that event, all that would b e needed would be to modify the PS3 client to continue using only the default textures and allow other clients the choice. In part the failure is the decision to stick with the textures as is. The PS3 hardware is a scapegoat for many things that are decisions made rather than limitations imposed.

Yes, they could. And you know what, they could keep the low-res texture for the PS3 while giving higher resolution for PC and PS4. Like they improved the graphics on PC with DirectX11...

They explicitaly said that the engine is built so that it can adapt to the system you're playing, and I didn't see any "We can't do that because of PS3 capabilities" stated by the dev-team, except for mods. People are just making this up like they did for FFXI, which was also proven wrong, especially when people believed that we couldn't have new gear, new animations and more inventory because of the PS2...until we received brand new gear, new animation and more inventory.
