That "story" was based on a tweet by a JP reporter that has a vendetta against Square Enix.

The official statement was that while XVI had a satisfactory sales base, it didn't meet the higher end of the sales that SE had projected as a possible..... again, because of the lower PS5 install base.

The reporter took a grain of truth and built a whole new lie around it. Neat.

Act 2: The game gets bad word of mouth and fades into the shadows
Act 3: Spend 30 minutes hugging microsoft's spokeperson at fanfest
Act 4: Blame sony and ps5 for bad sales

The demo was actually quite dull and the game peaked at Odin's fight. Still, an average game nonetheless.

What are you talking about? Not only are tons of us from ARR still around, there are literally people from 1.X that still play this game.

As it turns out, just because you don't like something doesn't mean a lot of other people don't like it.

The reason that "most" are ShB and EW "babies" is because the game has become wildly popular (and WoW pooped the bed during the pandemic) leading to a mass influx of new people. It's not "births minus deaths" it's "baby boom in addition to the existing population".
