I think its the new way of insulting people who have a different viewpoint.

There's some content that was ret-conned from what I remember, so the lore behind certain things no longer matches what it used to be.
If you're told "this exclusive mount is for doing PvP" and then two years later it's "oh, and we're selling this mount in the Gold Saucer for MGP", people feel like their achievement is "lessened", because now people who didn't "put in the work" can have the same thing. Forums always burn when you get to that point.
It's unfortunate; I personally tend to think things should either be achievement-based but permanently available -- for instance, the Demi-Ozma, Cerberus, and Amaro mounts, or the weapons you get for doing the Ultimate fights -- or if available only for a limited time then their exclusivity should only be guaranteed for a limited time. (I.e., if you can only get mount X from season Y of the Feast, you're guaranteed that mount remains exclusive to that achievement for, say, two years... but after two years, they could add another way to get the same mount.)
Because there are few things more disheartening than starting a game, discovering a thing you really want, and learning there's no way you can ever get it because it was only available during, say, a two month window for PvP four years ago.
I admit, though, there are exceptions. And as much as I'd love the legacy stuff on this account (as opposed to on the 1.x account I'd lost the password to), I think maybe those ones should remain exclusive... they show folks were willing to support this game when it was at its lowest, to have faith the new team would build something better. Something worth sticking around for.
Without them, it's debatable whether we'd have this game; a handful of largely-cosmetic exclusive items seems little enough as a thank-you.
I'd much rather they make 1.0 as it's own contained experience. i.e Single player
Perhaps to link it to the current game, if you complete the game while logged into your service account, it unlocks a title in the main game.
