I post things near the cost of the market. If someone undercuts me I will repost it once. If I am undercut again, I reduce the price by 20% a go down to 1 gil.
I do not have time for 10 people to undercut each other by 1 gil literally all night. I will kill market if I have to. If it is on me there is no profit, if I am wasting time doing the 1 gil bs thing I am losing money/progression by not doing something else.
I'm inpatient, I want gil now and don't want to wait. I try sometimes to sell items for their actual asking price because I want to make the most I can but after several days of others undercutting me I say screw it I want my money and undercut them.
You do realize you're actually the one being petty. Undercutting by 1 gil is an effort to maintain the higher price instead of tanking it. Ironically, whenever I get someone that does this, I actively fight with them, wait until their silly vendetta destroys the market, buy up all their stuff and relist it later on. Often times they don't even realize they made me more money.
But yes, please continue to "be a man."
On a more serious less sarcastic note, I always check the sell history for items i wanna ship out. if theres a full page and it hasnt sold in 5 weeks and want it gone, i dont think the MB will be helping me. It's also nice to have that median price if its a more... uncommon item that isnt in stock. It's a handy little feature
Time is money.
People who think making an extra thousand gil if they leave their slightly overpriced item on the MB for a month is good strategy will never make the big cash.
Most people only have the two retainers, forty market slots is a real bottleneck if you're a crafter/gatherer.
Here's my free tip, because it also benefits me when people stop doing this.
Nobody wants to buy your stack of 99 muguffins.
Unless it's a very current game material and even then your market will be limited.
Stacks of five or ten (or one!) will ALWAYS sell faster even if your upcharging out the arse, because that's still hella cheaper than 99 of them, which is way more than most people want or need anyway.
Depends on the items and the person. For everyone like yourself who will indefinitely stick to one market and perpetually keep it low, there are several more who will bow out quickly. They only undercut out of a perceived slight. In your case, I either wouldn't be in that market to begin with or make it a side market because, as you said, those mats are easy to get and it costs me little to fight with you. ;)
Pure spite. I live only to make them suffer!
I put it at normal price but when you make double of the item 1 gil less or more undercut I'll do it back because you can't wait I'll make you wait longer.
I try to be fair about it till that stuff happens then the gloves come off.
