Well since abyssea made this easy, no point restricting skill ups here so that people can choose to level on campaign instead. If the wall banging is really an issue maybe limit no skillups to soley that?

I can agree with that, and while we're on the issue they should also re-allow weapon breaks.
The 'issue' with wall banging never was skill-ups as far as I can see due to their level, it was the ability to AFK for large amounts (back then) of XP and AN while hitting them.
Then why were skillups removed from them?
I don't think there ever was an official statement about that, would be nice to get one. Only thing I can think of is that it was an effort to keep players in regular parties and whatnot... and/or to not be able to raise the skill-levels without any risks but honestly, the time when that might have made any kind of sense is long gone, I think. So there really is no reason that I can think of as to why it should be impossible.
It would add a great use, and even though it was recently revived quite a bit already, even more interest to it.

Not allowing skill-ups in campaign is, quite frankly, a ridiculous idea. Please allow Campaign skill-ups.
The point why you don't get skill ups is cause you don't risk to loose xp.
The point why you don't get xp for hitting the fortification is related to the problem they solved when it was possible to get xp from /brd (sing 10 songs then recieve your reward, reenter campaign battle).
I don't think it's a bad idea to let people get skill ups on campaign mobs (excluded the fortifications).
But on the other side - until now SE intended us to form parties for that purpose. And they improved the skill up rate on regular mobs.

how about changing the icons in campaign maps to show a brick for a "wall hitting CB" and a sword for an actual fight (as long as the map updates stay current - different issue)- then allow better skillups for one and better exp for the other?
But in general I agree that CB needs to add Skillups or most players will avoid it like the plague or risk being a LVL 90 *whatever* with 130 skill in their weapon/magic of choice...
I doubt it really is of any concern anymore since the losses are so minimal, next to nothing, and more than very easy to get back. I did mention that as well as a possible reason for the past, but now I think it is really very irrelevant.
If memory serves, the Fortifications at least were level 50, so you would not get very high skill levels from them anyways, even now when you can maximise them from 'decent challenge' monsters.
As an interesting side-note however, you can get skillupses by whacking at the Zvahl Fortalices, which seem to be around level 75. Granted, it can be far from safe or without any risks, but something like 'skilling up with fortifications' is actually happening while the battles where one might be expected to really learn something, is not...
