Their actions around the time of FFXIV launch seems to push this idea I agree.
If you bring out a successor MMO anyway, you are giving the signal you want to wind down the previous game (for instance the only thing that could possibly kill wow would be releasing wow 2). The whole nature of Abyssea and the level increases goes along with this mindset, if you think about everything that would keep people on XI (things left to do like level jobs, finish CoP, pride in very difficult to obtain gear and not wanting to start again due to that etc)they did away with them all. All that is left now is the slow weaning off of FFXI from nothing to do (as people cap on the easy Aby content) and giving us easy to get gear that doesnt give players the same unwillingness to start over on the new game.
Having said that FFXIV failed harder than anyone thought possible and now they don't really know wtf to do, I assume the basic plan now is to go long term and keep FFXI going for anotehr year or so till they think they can get us all to move to XIV then really dry up on updates to get us bored enough to move, notice they haven't really given any information on the future of FFXI like major long term updates/plans or news on ANY kind of expansions (even mini ones..although they will surely release at least 1-2 more for >99 to keep us here for another year and to pay for FFXIV development) The fact they are still fixing up the failure of FFXIV shows they have this plan because lets be honest, XI players are really all that game is ever going to attract.
They don't really get that quite a lot of XI players will never move and they are just going to end up with overall less players and a lot more on WoW or some other new game. Square have shown they really aren't that business smart though so it's no suprise they would do something so stupid.
Doesnt it make you mad that we FFXI players are paying for FFXIV right now, our subscriptions and the money we pay for mini expansions go to pay for FFXIV so that it can eventually (they hope) get to the point where it gets to destroy our game.
