Non-Wiki Players

We need to unite.
We should declare a server to be *the one* for non-wiki players and form a Linkshell for us.
That way we know we're playing with likeminded players.

What do you (non-wiki players) think?
Wiki players, your opinion isn't particularly wanted here - I've read all the arguments for wiki playing ("stop living in the past etc.") - but this is for us.

Have fun being lost and confused. ^^

Honestly a problem I have always had in this game, quests & missions often leave you without much(if any) idea about what you are supposed to do next, or where to go.

Which is exactly why people use wiki, and why it's lulzy to even think about playing entirely without it.

Now if this was a single player game where I could talk to every remotely relevant NPC in just 5-10 minutes, I would be fine with brute-forcing my way to the next quest/mission npc. When the game could take half an hour of walking between NPCs, sorry, don't have that kind of time (or patience).

Honestly thats how they seem to have designed the games quests & missions. It seems alot like normal Final Fantasy games, which is bad, normaly they have a linear feel somewhat, you know for the most part where to go or what to do. Even if you dont, there are normaly hints or clues in what people have said or done to guide you. In FFXI we have none of that, you get a vague pointer of what to do that kinda leaves you with no idea where in the giant world to go.

I imagine people who play the game without a wiki to be like those pigs in pork farms that live in small cages and are constantly shrieking while throwing themselves at the bars or gnawing on them.

WAR starts out with a 1-handed Sword; that must be the best weapon for WAR~!

I got an idea too. How about we all get a bunch of people together to build a working jet aircraft and the first thing we do is throw away the instructions?!?!?! Who's with me?!?!?!?!

I know some non Wiki players. They spam questions to me all day long. In fact I sarcastically refer to myself as Wiki-Vicki now on skype and vent. So sick of people who don't do any research to make themselves better players, or at least save me some wrist stress typing responses to questions like, "What are they key items for X mob", "How do i get the 3rd atma slot open in Abyssea" , etc.

LOL at this original posting - some people are too lazy to do research. I guess he is one of those crazy role player who live in his own fantasy world and like to explore and get lost, whatever rock his boat. For everyone else, research, read, and practice. Why waste time on this game doing things blindly when everything can be done so fast and easy with Wiki. Stop bothering people with questions and asking for help this and that, do your own homework.

I usually play as much as I could without looking up wiki, some things are obvious/easy/decent, but then there are the times when you're just plain stumped and have to look it up. Goes for any kind of game really, the guides are there, use them at your leisure.

Well... surely by now they probably already know how to do all the missions. Im sure getting a new drop from some random monster that took multiple tries to figure out how to beat would be pretty cool. I mean, no wiki isnt the way i'd go, but if thats something they wanna do then power to em!

Before wiki we had Killing Ifrit and Alla! So I guess you can still use those if you want to be a "Non-wiki!"

I'm confused. How exactly does not using wiki make you different or special compared to the thousands of other players who don't use wiki because they're either too lazy, or can't because they play on a console and don't have a pc close by? Would you impose your beliefs on everyone you party with, such that you ruin their gameplay by being uninformed and useless? Are you starting from scratch with no knowledge of the game? Have you ever actually tried to do anything serious in this game without using the wiki? The only quests that are really doable are the really simple fetch quests that tell you what they want. Most of them, you have no idea and get no hints. Good luck trying to get your AF or your Limit Breaks done without using the wiki. How does intentionally forcing yourself to be too lazy to look something up on the wiki suddenly make you special? I don't get it.

I totally bought a copy of this back in '04, and I still have it. It's not in great condition, but it's not falling apart. I like to thumb through it whenever I've had a bad day, and just laugh.

This. Not to mention constant inquiry shouts in Jeuno. I'd consult a wiki when I have a question over shouting myself any day. In comparison to the Port Jeuno mob, wiki's reply is a lot less likely to contain the word "penis".

Seriously, I suspect SE's reasoning for not giving guidance via NPCs went along with the idea of forced partying that for years required at least 6 people to do anything. Whether they expected that community info pool to originate from other players in game or an a separate wiki who knows, but I bet they deluded themselves into thinking the former would work. Having to explain the same thing to dozens of people in chat at different times, and every person giving different wrong information, ugh.

Its not that i've expected much just seems like there have been alot of threads of this... "caliber" as of late.

I have a limit, I'll take questions from new players, especially ones who don't know about the wiki (or for some reason haven't learned by now that the first thing you do when starting a new mmo is google "[MMO's name] wiki". I'll take questions from someone I know is a console player and doesn't have a pc close by. I'll take questions from any of my friends whose first language is not english, to the point that they have trouble deciphering the wiki (though as of any time remotely recently, they're all fluent enough to get the info on their own). I'll also take questions from friends who know I happen to have the wiki open and can look it up faster than they could, if it's a quick question/answer.

For anyone else, my limit is 2 questions. 3rd question results in my giving them the answer, and then saying that they should really use the wiki. After that, I just say "I'm sure you can find the answer on wiki." I'll also give this as the answer to any question whose actual answer is far longer than I have any interest in typing out.

To be fair, in spite of it all, every time new quests get released, no matter how silly, they still typically get figured out within a month (within a week if there's only 1-2, more quests pushes the less important ones to the back).

Certainly, but not everyone would be in on the knowledge, especially without a wiki. No matter what has been figured out, you'd still get questions galore form returning people, plus wrong answers, from dicks and and the ignorant alike.

In the end, non-wiki people get their information from people who do browse the wiki, so by association, they use wiki.

Is it just me, or has the number of these ridiculous players and threads greatly increased over the past month or so?

If you don't want to play with the wiki, don't use it. Simple as that.

If you want the feeling of "exploration" and being able to discover new things as they come out, then simply be there to try things out as soon as they're released.

I know Heroines' Holdfast isn't a very good example, but while doing it on the test server, I had a fun time figuring out certain techniques like how to avoid Mumor's instant death move, and I had a lot of fun, not only because the event itself is fun, but also because I knew I was one of the first people to experience it.

The brady guide was for noobs. The hardcore elite bought the atlas too which only had maps in it you could purchase making it an invaluable adventuring tool. Mine was so useful its still in perfect condition.

Also send them Starcade and Rosina also make sure that server has no connection to talk with outsiders

When you're all on your own server, in your own happy linkshell, and one of you works out how to do a quest....

...remember not to tell anyone else about it, because that's basically all that the wikis are doing.

Depriving yourself of knowledge is never a good thing.

In fairness, there's a flipside to what everyone's saying: were FFXI not so frustratingly opaque about what it wants you to do (it's probably among the top-five most opaque games I've ever played, and not just in terms of mechanics), I could easily see wanting to play without a wiki for all the same reasons as I try to play without walkthroughs/guides in single-player games. If you don't absolutely need the assistance to progress, why ruin it?

Yup these boneheaded players who long for the dark ages seems to increase in greater numbers lately. First all those who wanted to have lvl 75 caps, then the old school party where you are so dependent on xyz jobs or no party, then all the abyssea haters, etc.... Personally I am all about people abandoning abyssea in droves and run away from it, leave the zones alone, so I can have ZERO competition and can claim NMs all day long and have no lags. I was hoping voidwatch would draw the crowds away from abyssea but seems like people just cannot get enough of it. Please leave abyssea so I can have it all for myself :)

I may not choose to play this way but the guy wants a real challenge where the answer isn't hit the easy button. I don't see why the same people seem to post such negative talk in every single thread that isn't OMFGILOVEEASYBUTTONSGIVEMEINSTANTGRATIFICATIONLIKEAFIVEYEAROLDDEMANDS!

Yes because a quest giver asking you for an 'item', and not telling you what it is, or where to find it, makes sense.
