It was an anti-calvary weapon (hence the name). Calvary had a weak point, the purpose of the weapon was to exploit that weakpoint. You didn't even have to put much effort into it, so long as the horse ran into it. As for other ways of using (more applicable ones, you would require a special set of metal shoes (I'll get into that in a moment). Think of a double headed spear, but heavier, and with much larger blades. Due to the weight of it, it would get stuck in the ground, leaving you defenseless, that's where the shoes come into play. You would use them to kick the Mahne upwards to remove it from the floor. I don't have any pictures at the moment. I'll look.
Edit: I made a mistake, it's not an anti-calvary weapon, it is a calvary weapon used to cover it's weak point. Clerical errors D: Damn them. The part about shoes and stuff is for use while not on horseback.
