These are planned rolling blackouts. A good replication software package can start and stop it's transmissions.

Cem,
Yes I am 100% that they would be using fibre optic's & this would increase their transfer rate (which they need for all the end user's). But the time frame is still correct. no matter how you look at it a week or so is not far from what it would take. considering the limited up time they currently have & then the uploading to new server + they need to do a major test to the system, Cause man when the server is up the amount of people logging on will be nuts.
I think Etrigan was referring to when the blackout hit SE's data center not the ISP. If you knew you were going down at a certain time and didn't have a generator, you could stop the replication process in advance of that time and shut down the servers properly. You are probably correct Jalonis, ISPs are probably on a no shutdown grid. They keep communications up between too many necessary services.
If they do inhouse backup then just send the disc's to the new location for upload they do not need ISP for anything. But from what i have been reading in Japan, their ISP's are online all the time which suggests that they are not located in Tokyo?
idk just a thought
Ugh who cares, seriously? We won't know anything more until Tuesday, so go outside or play other games people. The reality is, SE is doing all they can to restore service as quickly as they can, and there isn't much we can do to help aside donating to the Japan relief funds.
So try to make the most out of your vacation from Vana'diel :)
I am not saying that it would take a couple of days, but a time table of 1-2 weeks for replication, complete full testing should be ample. More than likely the redundant site would have this in a virtual environment. You can image servers in a flash if they are using a product like VMWare.
Soooo we are not aloud to just have a conversation? And you tell us to go outside and everything & yet you are on the forums? Does no make any sense. If that is truly how you believe then so be it BUT please do not preach to me about what YOU think I SHOULD be doing. The best part about life is you choose your actions. And right now I want to chat on the forums not go outside and freeze.
I guess many people here know about japanese economics since everyone says how easy it must be to do X or Y things with the servers to keep them running.
This is why there are schools and colleges. Go learn something other than how many beers you can chug at frat parties.

People need to stop caring about other people threatening to leave the game. Let them leave! If they're being jerks about this now, imagine how they act in-game.
Yeah VMWare is great & they do most likely use something of the such. IF they are down I would hope that they are at least thinking of this as an option. but we cannot say what SE will do cause they have definitely surprised me before.
Sadly this is the case but as has been shown of late Square don't really have that great of a business sense, not only are they doing damage to their main title but there hope for the future one too. It's obvious they won't do what almost any other serious company would of done so we jsut have to hope (if we care about FFXI) that the damage done through loss of playerbase won't be as bad as almost everyone with any sense thinks it will. Having feelings for Japan won't stop people going off and getting into the mass numbers of other MMOs out there nor will it guarantee their return when Square turn things back on if they like what they test.Quote:
The thing is, they ARE choosing to sit on their thumbs instead of relocate servers and continue making money. You know why a 2 week downtime is unheard of in the MMO industry? It's because the vast majority of players, the non-hardcore, non-fanboy base has an incredibly short attention span. They want their entertainment when they want it. If it isn't there, they go looking somewhere else. When they find it at the new place, they realize "Hey, this is pretty good, and the xyz is even a lot better!"
I figure after a week you'd have 98% returns, only the people who were already letting their sub expire would be leaving. After two weeks you have bored people trying out WoW, Rift, etc for their MMO fix. Now you're dropping to a 90% return rate. Every week you're going to be dropping a little more of your paying base. This means that by doing nothing, they're destroying the population of the returning players, and in turn not only losing out on profits for the month of April, but losing more and more as time goes on.
Again, this goes directly against disaster recovery and planning as it is taught at nearly any college in the country.
Only one other company took their game servers down and they got them back up in 3-4 days, just a matter of wait and see how it plays out now since common sense eludes most.
and btw
se not acting like a business normally does, just looking on profit
i´m so thankful they don´t makes me feel a lot better to see they act like human´s!!!!
so we should do same, stay here on forum, talk, care and be here to show we care, and when it´s up again go back play and have fun again with people that stayed and prooved they really friends
so
em/ waves around
i´ll see you ingame one fine day
breau, alexander/bastok
And the withdrawal begins :P enjoying my vacation my pray's to japan to.
Now I do agree with you about some people that come on here strictly to tell people how stupid they are & the such, which is uncalled for. Just cause someone has a bad idea does not make them any less educated, they could very well be more educated 7 the person that is "bashing" is the one that never made it any where's in life cause of his poor attitude towards others'.
just a thought.
After talking with so many people from different servers kinda makes me wish their was just one server. I have met alot of very friendly people on here & it is nice, cause Lakshmi is full of people who's head is so big that they are unable to assist with anyone who has not completed everything they have in the game..
Thanks All ^^
ohhhh opps my bad. just re-read your post ><
I do understand that A LOT of people have "easy" methods to get the servers up. It is funny reading some of the idea's though like "get 10 diesel generators & just let them run". yes their are limitation to what they can do & you make a valid point that we do not know exactly what their situation is. But it is all just speculation regardless & is nice to just talk about something other then "Leeching is productive" & "Change the lvl cap of Abyssea".
Sorry for the mix up ^^
(If you ever need anything I would be glad to point you in the right direction, unless I have no clue then I would point you in the wrong direction)
Anyone else having trouble signing into FFXI right now?
My BF says SE needs to get the servers back up simply because its costing him more money then when they are up. lol That would be my fault though, since I keep finding games I wanna play or books I wanna read and so forth.
SE is a multi million dollar company. i work as a 911 dispatcher. (to sum it up) even we have back up servers in other areas of the US. it woudlnt be that hard for SE to make servers where they already have them placed in cali and europe. even if they built new servers in Minot North Dakota, the only thing there to worry about is cows and weather....and eventually yellowstone when it blows up. but se wont be around by then anyway. yes i feel for the people. i feel for all who have lost loved ones and what not. i dont even care if we get a free month..take my money its only 27. i just want to play again. but im not bashing them and putting them down, just saying there could be back up servers in places where nothing happens is all. and i have yet to let SE or whoever reads forums that i do feel for the county of Japan, and i hope all goes well.
Hmm I wonder if we are getting stones while they turned off the power switch?
Would be a nice force-save for my stone stock, as I was pretty much dry when they cut the lines.
Oh well, hope the JP's recover from all the drama.
Apparently so!

NOOOO!!! March 22 is when Crysis 2 comes out.... cant we move the servers coming back up to the 23rd or 24th so I can get my Crysis fix?
That is your definition of hostile? So was Pappa Smurf a general in your lateral thought process?
Seems to me alot of you have a problem with staying on the topic. And you rather enjoy making stabs at those of us with the gumption to have a negative remark towards the business sense of a company we expect results from. I don't mind a witty retort from most people here. Too bad that has yet to happen ;(
The way this is being handled on Square's end is not business smart. Period. You can't sway my judgment on the matter. I have a right to my opinion no matter how many of you fanboys, funboys, and forum derelicts don't like it. So keep it coming. <3
Anon,
Dude seriously, if your leaving- leave!
The whole scene you made ended pages ago. No one cares if you stay or go. Just drop it.
The game isn't up and won't be up til at least Tuesday. Accept it or take your own advice and get out of here.
SE is'nt going to rush getting servers back up, why would they? If servers went back up now, they'd have to pay their staff for hours they work, so they would lose money since they arnt making money for april. The longer they are off, the more they will save. But i'm definitly sure they will have servers up by april 1st, so hang in there.
