On the contrary: the age of the code means there's a decade's worth of changelogs to pore over before making any modifications. It's also written for older, dated technologies that require specialized (read "expensive") knowledge to work on.

Nobody writes PS2 games any more, let alone ports them to Windows 98.

If they make a new expansion with new zones, and new storyline, and charge $10-30 for it... even if 100,000 players purchase it, that's a cool $1-3M on top of normal subs.

no that level of work does not imply something that will not be used. SE thankyou, you have made me regret canceling my subscription. i will be reactivating it the day i hear that you are officially releasing this as an Xpac.

With the updates we been getting any expansion at this point should be free, but I doubt it will be.

Ultimately, the main motivation for a new expansion would be to get people to resubscribe (which I assure you would most definitely happen, as you can see in this thread alone). The profits would not be just from expansion sales, but mostly from monthly subscriptions. Even if it was very short-lived and would only keep people playing another 6 months, that's ten times more than what they'd make from the actual purchase of the expansion. And 100k is a low estimate in this regard (FFXIAH is currently tracking ~260k active characters and in times where multiboxing is becoming more and more common, the demand for same-account mules is going down, especially active ones). Server maintenance is a constant cost (they'd have to pay it with or without a new expansion), so after the initial release it wouldn't cost them anything extra.

I'm reasonably certain it would actually net them a good $10M if it didn't completely suck.

And there is realism and then there is deluded cynicism. They have stated constantly for months that they were planning something worthy of FFXI's 10th anniversary, this was before Vanafest was even announced. Just because its not on the official site like the previous vanafest had (which at the time did not have official forums I might add) does not mean they haven't been hyping some big announcement for months. They are taking the time after all these years to make a new UI, we have the new ROM folders with distinctly different zones (even if they are using reused textures and placeholder objects at the moment) speculating an actual expansion.

Something of a 'surprise' is coming and it within reason someone could speculate on a new and (hinted) platform release + expansion due to all the effort in renovating the base of the game. Even we hadn't heard about Vita for a while means nothing about its status, I mean ToAH was basically announced in a snide off topic comment and then officially announced nearly 9 months later at a large gaming convention and nothing was said about till then. The same with FFXIV which had exactly 4 years of us waiting on the 'concept' to become an official product. No news does NOT mean its been canceled with this dev crew, especially with Tanaka back at the helm. Does that mean its coming? Of course not but don't assume something has been cancelled just because you haven't heard an update on comment that was said in the middle of the concept stage.

At any rate, let me put it this way: the events of VanaFest 2012 that are considered to be the most notable will have a live English (et al) simulcast with the community reps, while other, less-promoted aspects of VanaFest will have a delay before any official translation makes it to the wider internet.

The community reps will be covering the cosplay contest, the trivia quiz, and talk of the new play-as-a-monster feature live. On the other hand, the "Dev Talk" sessions (where such momentous news would be announced and has been announced in the past) won't receive an official translation until half an hour after it's actually ended, while the "Director's Panel" won't be mentioned by the community reps until a full day after it's over.

And it's not like there's no script.

I'd be looking forward to the outpouring of bitter disappointment on these forums come Sunday morning if I weren't full up on schadenfreude for the month.

Something worthy of the 10th anniversary does include Vanafest, but to a small extent, because only a small percentage of our FFXI population will experience that. It's meant to be something everyone can have a go at. Something universal. Something within the game.

..Vita is different because they haven't announced it officially yet. If they did an official announcement in Jul 2011 and never talked about it again then maybe you could say its an abandoned project, but Tanaka was merely looking into the possibility. So long as they didn't come out and say it (in a press release, to be sure), they never did announce it.

Events at Vanafest. Live event. Scripts given. Not everyone has access to all info. Information subject to change right up to event start. Translators are demi-gods and can thoroughly translate everything the devs say and convey the proper message in a matter of seconds.

They already explained why they stagger certain streams. A big surprise reveal preceded by screenshots is not. Nevermind the fact it may have been spoiled by someone else already. If it doesn't come out of the horses mouth, it doesn't count.

I SO look forward to being disappointed. Wish you could join us.

I would think that the smarter move for SE would be to make sure that FFXI runs on Windows 8. It's probably a hell of a lot easier than porting to Vita and I guarantee that there will be a lot more windows 8 portables than Vitas.

I expect that there will be more expansions.

I'm not so jazzed about the idea of the already short handed dev team working on porting ffxi to another soon to be out dated Sony device like the Vita though. what is the expected lifespan on the vita before something replaces it? 1... maybe 2 years?

Maybe there is a new expansion planned, maybe there isn't. People need to temper their expectations or anything that is announced will be a disappointment.

Huh? The Vita just came out this year and its cousin lasted for more then 5 years (Hell still selling more then Vita in Japan right now because there isn't enough games on it yet to support the price). Its not like the iPad where a new stronger version comes out each year, what's there should last a while, especially coming from the development and publishing company that still won't let the PS2 version of this game die :P. Seriously I'd easily play FFXI a lot again if it was on the Vita, there is an untapped market for MMO's on portable systems that they would be wise to get in to. I don't have any inside information about what apple / microsoft / <insert vendor here> have up their sleeves, but I would not be surprised at all to see cell phones and tablets popping up all over the place with better specs than the vita in the next year or so.

Well its a good thing the Vita isn't either one of those! Playstation Vita is portable console, there is one defined spec that lasts till the next iteration which is intrinsically designed to not show up for 4-5+ years. There are revisions, but they rarely involve making the device more powerful, just more efficient (Longer battery life, slimmer design, couple extra superfluous accessories etc. but the actual power like RAM, CPU, GPU etc. do not change till the next generation.) Their only competition is the Nintendo 3DS in this type of format. The Vita already has significantly better specs then the PS2 (And more RAM then PS3!) so as long as they keep the PS2 support, there is absolutely zero reason not to try and tap the Vita market when its a platform that should be supported for several years.

I'm kind of surprised that this thread hasn't been closed, but now that I think about it, is there a legitimate reason for why this thread could be closed? Other than possibly exposing future plans for the game before they could officially announce it? IDK.
