You are greatly overestimating how much data text really is.
One letter or a hundred thousand letters, it makes no difference.

I really like it but if its not fixed I wont use it. why bother turning it off every time i don't know how many people will bother turning it off every time ever. Thanks for a unless feature that really didn't need added if this is how its going to be.
You really know nothing about TCP/IP networking.Quote:

We are aware that making the default setting for the Yell filter be set to OFF upon log in would be more convenient. However, for this initial time-frame we need to check how this new feature will affect world/area lag, as well as lag for each player. Due to this, we decided to set the default to ON so there would not be any huge lag right from the start. Rest assured that it will not be like forever and once we confirm the server load status, we will look into changing the default settings as well as expanding this feature to other areas.
/signed.
No one will leave PJ if they think they will miss out on groups because people decide not to /yell because so many people have it turned off
Oh thanks, Camate!
I posted before I saw your post.
Camate keep in mind also, you can't get a true gauge on how this will be used, or how effective it would be as most people will not use it for the sheer inconvenience of it. The tests imo won't be accurate as I for one will not use it knowing most people (especially the ones who don't read forums) won't know what the /yell feature is let alone change the filter.
Would you guys all rather they have it so its not filtered, have the servers crash repeatably if it is unable to handle yells and then have it removed?
I fully agree with you. I'm not going to turn on the yell function every time I log onto FF, that's just stupid. I would much rather keep sitting in PortJeuno like I've been doing and wait for shouts. Like everyone else says about not wanting the servers to lag and crash, not enough people are even going to use the function to be able to give us an accurate reading on how the yell command lags servers. I was slightly excited over this new feature, but its not worth the hassle. Another one for the trash bin.
Yeah, I pretty much stopped using the /yell feature myself...
I had it [off] so I could see /yell but then.. when I logged back on, I forgot to turn it back [off] because of the inconvenience the auto default settings are so I just gave up on it myself ....
This /yell feature is a good idea but executed very poorly to the point where people just don't care anymore...
The command does seem to have a short cooldown on it to prevent spam. I know some people were asking for this worried about that, so just throwing that out there.
last time i checked, the filter in the filter options stayed off when i logged off and back on, so idk what the problem is
The update notes said a 60 second delay.
Also, still think /yell in general is useless until you make it a Nation-to-Nation chat.
The original suggestion that led to /yell was the idea of letting us set our Home Point/Idle Area/etc to anywhere in the 3 Nations, or Jeuno. Towards that idea, the only thing this does is let us set our Home Point in Gardens/Upper/Lower, which there is little-to-no reason to do, as there's hardly anything we'd want there in comparison.
/yell would be a decent way to avoid Port Jeuno congestion if done right, but so far it's just been a mess.
I also don't see how you're going to get stress tests done with /yell if nobody is using it due to it being filtered by default when you log in...
Agree with OP.
Kindly save our settings, and default yell filter off.
If folks are bothered by yells it's a simple matter to turn the filter on, a non-issue if the setting is saved.
Defaulted to filter on has caused it to be rarely used already.
Here is what I noticed, very few people seem to use /yell. It was popular the first day it was out but after that use of it seemed to of died down and get almost no response from other people using it. Most people still shout in port jeuno for stuff. Due to the fact the filter is set to 'on' every time you log in. Would be much more widely used if your settings are saved much like any other filter.
Defeats the whole purpose of having a /yell in all parts of jeuno if a large portion of people can't see what you are yelling since they didn't turn off their filter on log in.
As an aside -- There should be some chatlog confirmation when using this command.Quote:
A new text command called /yellsw has been added.
/yellsw [subcommand]
Toggles the [Yell] chat filter on/off.
>>Subcommands:
on: [Yell] chat filter on.
off: [Yell] chat filter off.
Toggles on and off when no subcommand is specified.
I didn't realize it was working until I double-checked my config settings.
If I have to check my config settings to make sure it works, it defeats the purpose of the command. I'm just sayin' :)
yeah, it would be nice if it at least said "yell filter is off" or something
Agreed. In its current state /yell will probably reach *fewer* people than /shout and so it is rarely used. (Although I have seen some people using both in combination, which would reach the people who do remember to turn their filter off over and over again).
Therefore, I agree with the OP: the yell filter setting should stay the way each player sets it until that player changes it.
Please pass this along to the dev team: How are they going to QA the lag when no one is using the feature at all? On Siren I have never, ever seen the yell function used ever. Ok, I admit that was a condescending and rhetorical question. The truth is I'm excited about this feature but lag is increased because it's disabled.
You see, if yell were enabled, lag would be alleviated in Port Jeuno since players would go to other areas of the city.
I'm almost certain server load would be adversely affected less by yelling than by having 700 people in port jeuno all the time.
Yell right now it useless, people don't use it because most forget to turn the filter off and anyway it still only covers jeuno. The whole idea of the suggestion in the first place was for people to be able to see it in starter cities aswell.
Right now /yell was a waste of dev time, hardly anyone uses it at all..it's far too restricted for what little it does. If it had of been more widespread all these things would of made sense but just around jeuno is silly.
Something else I would like to see. A reminder text for when you toggle /yell on or off. Such as when you toggle /blockaid.
lol This topic still goes on... yeah I just completely forgot about the /yell feature already...
The Default settings gotta go.
SE needs to see the bigger picture, and that bigger picture is "Making features to be convenient for players".
But instead, we get a good idea that becomes inconvenient to use rather than executing it properly and making it convenient. A good idea that just happens to be trash at the moment until fixed right.
Was on the game all day and it wasn't until 1:30am that I realized that the yell filter was still on...
C'MON SE, remove this default ON filter. What a stupid idea, if people want it on they will adjust their own filters accordingly.
