Using ruby chests, it's theoretically possible for any job that can solo to get the light balance to start gettign TE chests (or gold for that matter), but it requires fast, steady kills and a hell of alot of luck. I wouldn't bother unless I had stones to burn. MUCH safer to join a party for a bit and help get their lights maxed, or even form a group of people who intend to solo but between them can get the lights. You can also /tell the mage soloers going after NMs and offer to help them max the physical lights while farming pop items, some of them will be willing to go for that, and it's good karma.

I'd like to mention that DRG/BLU can also get Azure very easily on ephemerals. Take em down to 5~10% ish, turn your back/disengage(if you think wyvern is going to kill) and spam physical spells. BST/BLU could do the same but I don't know how much utility you'd get from /BLU overall, dunno if it'd be enough to say that's worth doing. It's a different story for DRG due to the healing breaths though.
If all else fails though, ask someone to help you for a bit and keep soloing after they leave? -

It was simply that San-doing more damage-is more likely to take off that last sliver than Ni. Obviously, you can keep spamming either until that last sliver of HP is gone. That's one good thing I've seen out of Abyssea. Prior to it and !! processing, rare was the ninja I ever saw who ever used anything but Utsu and the stealth spells, and so when aby 1st showed, so did the lack of ninjitsu skill.
