All Saints’ Wake was in full swing, with every city state participating in the celebration with eerie decorations and revelry in the streets. Ishgard was no different, and Ellana had been pleasantly surprised to be invited by Ser Aymeric to a private party at his estate.
Aymeric greeted her at the door personally, looking dashing as always in a finely tailored black suit and a long cloak secured across his shoulders. With an impish smile, and a small flash of sharp canines, he ushered her inside. The door thudded shut behind them and the lights promptly extinguished.
Ellana stood for a moment, waiting for her eyes to adjust, and sensed Aymeric moving away from her into the darkness. She reached out too late, her fingertips only finding the air, and she blinked in confusion as candle braziers lining the walls spontaneously flickered back to life. The main hall was now empty, though she could hear a faint rustle of fabric ahead.
Finding no trace of Aymeric in the corridor beyond the hall, she continued deeper into the mansion. Spinning on her heels with every sound, but unable to locate anyone responsible, Ellana was certain that she was being watched.
She finally found him in a study lined with floor to ceiling bookcases, lit only by the firelight from a small crackling hearth. He fixed her with a look of both amusement and intense hunger, absently swirling the liquid in his goblet with one hand and beckoning her over to him with the other.
“All Saints’ Wake always stirs within me the power of blood and shadows, and now you have had a small taste of what it allows.”
She noted a small dab of red smudged at the corner of his lips from whatever he had been drinking, and stared at it transfixed with a dawning of understanding. He had followed her, undetected, while she traversed through the mansion.
“I would willingly share this power with you, if you desire. Think of what you could do to our enemies with such a tool in your arsenal” he continued softly, “and I would be there to stand by your side against the chaos, for eternity... if you join me tonight.”
Her gaze flitted to a shape slumped in the corner of the room, the body of a man she vaguely recognised from The Brume. She gave a small gasp and Aymeric stepped closer, a sad wistfulness etched across his handsome features.
“I only quench the thirst with a sacrifice of those who have hurt others, like him. Tell me...” his breath was hot against her exposed neck and she closed her eyes at what was to come. “Would you turn away such a gift knowing that you can use it for what is right?”
He knew her well- she would take any steps possible to help her protect the people of Eorzea; even if it meant embracing the grey between supposed morals set in black and white.
