Is there a subscription to play or not?

I have been playing ff 14 for sometime now and I am at level 4 and yet I have not been asked to subscribe to a monthly pay as you play plan? Not that I wish to, but I was never asked to even when I installed the game and registered my account. So is gameplay at the moment free to play now or what? I'm confused on this issue Does it start at a certain level you reach like WoW at level 20?

All new games came with a 30 day trial. Also if you registered game by a certain point when they were having login issues in the first wk or so you got more extra time.
For example, I started 8/27 and my trial ends oct 5.
If you wanted to continue beyond that you'd have to set up payment methods on mog station.
