I'm sorry but unless a system is corrupted, and I hardly think it's the case or most of the players wouldn't be online by now, the main source of such problems is the user.
I'm not mocking them of course, I don't think they wanted to get hacked on purpose, but as it's been said on other threads there was a lot that could have been done to avoid these issues like
    - using a strong password
    - using an email that was never used on any other site or that at least offers the same OTP system like the SE token since it's the main source used to change your password
    - using the SE token software and if you still don't own a smartphone, or hate that the software could reset by itself and take you too much of your free time to put it back, get the physical one; it costs money but if you get hacked you will probably lose that month's subscription anyway… so probably it's worth it.

If they get hacked even after all this then they fell for phishing and input the data theirselves or they had a keylogger (and that's why some of the bots are made and shared in internet) and in that case none can save you, the OTP is valid for few seconds/minutes so an automated script has all the time necessary to login and abuse your account using the OTP you wrote.

So again, I'm sorry for whoever got hacked but they didn't do everything they could to secure their accounts.

    *OTP: one time password

One time password doesnt make your account invulnerable. Many have had accounts with it hacked. And blaming the account owner for getting hacked is not always 100% true. Thats like an airplane falling on your house and trashing it and your insurance blames you for that. /boggle.

3rd party sites like forums were hacked. Not sure which ones but that added to the mess of ppl getting accounts hacked. Granted it doesnt help to keep a clean pc, etc, but its not fool proof. If a hacker wants in, they are gonna get in if they bother to put in time and effort.

I agree with ZohnoReecho. I've played MMOs since 1999 (about 14 years) and I've never had an account get hacked before, even when I played XI and XIV 1.0. I have a strong password and am knowledgeable about phishing websites and Emails, which I have received and immediately spammed/trashed/reported, knowing beforehand what their intentions were. Other people need to be informed about these scams, because it infuriates the customers and ruins trust with the companies. People may claim, "There is no reason my account should have been hacked," however, a lot of people are also unaware that a false identity has attempted to contact them and, as was said previously, unknowingly install spy/malware which steals personal information. Square Enix has sent notices in the recent past notifying everyone about false Emails and websites that are remarkably believable. For example, the Emails have fake websites that will say www.squareenix.com instead of www.square-enix.com (as well as others), and a lot of people won't know any better... but they're actually websites that steal your information. Many people will stay they're intelligent and careful about these kinds of things... and while I may claim to be aware of these actions, I'm still always afraid of the possibility of my account being compromised as well, because I know it's a real issue that's consistently happening. If Security Tokens are being compromised, then they're a broken system in my point of view and experience.

More like not pulling the handbrake because you are on a flat road and you are sure your car will not move.
If people got hacked with the token it's probably due to a keylogger or scam. Not only they should know the algorithm but even the token's serial to generate an OTP and since my bank token is made from the same company I should be really scared if they did that.

It's not about blame or fault. It's about responsibility. The security of your computer, your account information, and your password are your responsibility. Not only is it right in the ToS, but it's plain common sense. Square has absolutely no control over whether or not you use proper antivirus, or go to shady websights, or open phishy emails, or buy gil, or use the same email account that is used to reset your password at insecure websights. No control= no responsibility. Now they could put out an announcement stating that you will no longer be able to log into ff14 without one of their security keys. Not only would that drastically reduce these incidents, but it would save them money on the service calls, and make them money on token profits. Somehow though I don't think the 90%+ of players who won't get one would stand for that.

It seems though that you are implying that people are doing all the right things and still getting hacked left and right. I hate to break it to you but there isn't a global conspiracy against ff14 players. SE isn't working with the RMT companies to make extra profits. The underground Chinese hacking network hasn't cracked security tokens or Square's servers. And you can put away the foil hat, the aliens are not sending rays into your brain to control world politics.

They are taking accounts precisely the way folks on the forum and SE themselves have been telling you. Phishing, keyloggers, information from compromised websights, hacked email accounts, giving your information to RMT websights, etc. I say this because even in the off chance that a group of hackers had the ability to steal your account even after following all of SE's advice on security,THEY WOULDN'T BOTHER. With thousands of accounts just sitting there easy to grab, it isn't even conceivable that they'd go through the effort to crack the hard to get ones.

I'm assuming your password is decent, not easy to figure out and hasn't been used for another mmo or websight. In which case I'd turn attention to your email account. If someone gains control of your email they can just request a password reset to be sent to your email> reset password> erase email> log into your account. If you've used that email account to register to any gaming websights or anything, or on any profiles, I'd certainly change it.
