Keyboard v console?

We just had the PC v PS3 thread and someone mentioned you can use a gamepad on a PC. That kind of got me wondering. Which of the following do you all prefer for PC gaming and why?

1] Standard keyboard and mouse

2] standard gamepad [like console version]

3] Keypad and mouse and keyboard [Logitech G13 for instance]

4] Keyboard and multibutton mouse [Razer type perhaps?]


I like my G13 for the thumbstick movement and comfortable easy access to 14 skills, however if I go past that 14 I struggle as my hand gets in the way of seeing more keys. When I've tried movement via keyboard and mouse I'm a lot slower than using thumbstick. I've never tried a gamepad though.

I use my 360 controller primarily on my PC, but go to keyboard/mouse in complex mouse battles when I need to mouseover, type, or move around my skills.

When I first started, I tried for a week to use the keyboard/mouse setup right out the door, but being a solid console gamer, my hand started cramping from having to stay in an upright claw position on WASD. And before the "why aren't you on PS3 then?" comments, I always do my research on multiplatform games. Judging from the complaints and hardware restrictions on the PS3 (and the PS4 in the near future), I made the right choice. Though, being a console gamer, I tend to solo more than group, which is also why I excel at using a controller.

I only use WASD controls for FPS and twitch games. FFXIV's cooldown system makes it so you have more than enough time to react to just about anything and prepare/position yourself. ................................. Plus my 360 controller has glow in the dark blue lights on it. >.<

For FFXIV, I prefer a gamepad. Other games need a keyboard + mouse, however.

On PC, use gamepad for most things but on dungeon runs I prefer my keyboard (G15) and mouse combo as I find it faster to react for me.

Its not very often I will use the WASD when using my keyboard as I react to moving faster by Right click + Left click + sweep mouse to direction i wanna go, free's the skill bar hand up and you are instantly running (plus the WASD claw really does hurt after a while). *Shrugs* Comes down to personal preference.

Going by previous threads on this topic, most people who have seriously tried ARR's gamepad interface prefer it to kb/mouse, except targeting will require learning about configuring multiple targeting modes to be most efficient. Mostly only those who have never tried the gamepad for more than 20 minutes are the ones swearing by the old kb/mouse interface.

That would include me then as I've never had a console (apart from Wii which is totally different). I do own a basic gamepad for PC, but hadn't previously found a game that manages it well. I don't know if it's worth the huge learning curve to use it or just stay with the G13 I know and love. lol

Keyboard and mouse. i use a razor naga epic.

Though this weekend i tried a gamepad for gathering. I think i like gathering with a gamepad better than a keyboard and mouse. Less strain to the hand.

But everything else. keyboard and mouse for me.
