Terminology. Why does it bug me and others?

When people hear terms they aren't familiar with or that didn't derive from the first MMO they played they automatically think that it came from WoW. Pretty much all those terms I can coin from pre-WoW MMOs, but the fact of the matter is that WoW brought in a huge influx of players into the MMO environment so this is where a good portion of the MMO player base picked up these terms.

I think the only solution is to abolish all that is different and use the same term for everything, right? because having multiple terms to describe one thing is never found in any language, especially not in english. We should just go a step further and go full south park and shun anyone who doesn't..

I spent my time in WoW so I'm familiar with the terms, but I always had a preference for the FFXI terms since even though I quit WoW I was always playing FFXI. The term pally does drive me up the wall though, regardless of the game I hate that nickname as much as Major Nelson hates Xbone.

On the DD back and forth, DD is one that needs context to know which version it is. It can be either Direct Damage or Damage Dealer depending on context. In MMO's more often then not it is referring to a Damage Dealer just because a vast majority of damage sources are direct. I can only think of a few indirect damage abilities in the game, such as an ACN/SMN/THM/BLM limit break.

unless I am talking to someone that hates the word toon, then I purposely say toon as often as possible. It's enjoyable to watch nerds rage about meaningless things. You know what toon means, and so does everyone else. Get over yourself.

That's just sad. I think you should take your own advice regarding therapy.

I think I opened a can of worms with this thread.

I made it mostly out of curiosity. I wasn't really trying to thicken the line between the opposing opinions.

Whether you use terms from other MMOs, terms from FFXI, or new ones specific to XIV, it really doesn't matter. It doesn't make someone a terrible person if they use terminology you don't care for.

I was just curious as to why it struck me and others with negative feelings to see or hear those terms used here.

Is it more sad or less sad than adults getting pissed off about a word being used to describe a character in a video game? As bad as it is to bring myself down to the level of someone raging about a word, sometimes that is what you have to do to illustrate how inane it is. It's even more ridiculous that the topic has created multiple 15+ page threads on this forum alone, not to mention across the entire breadth of the internet.

Moral of the story: Grow some thicker skin or get off the internet.

And just so you know, none of this upsets me. I think it's all pretty hilarious.

For some reason the use of terms like "DPS" instead of DD, and "Pally" instead of PLD, bug me and I can't really say why. It's not that I dislike WoW. I've played WoW for 5+ years. I thoroughly enjoyed the game until recently.

Is it because I expect only FFXI terminology to be used? I can't really say. I'm not really sure what it is or why it bugs me to see terminology from other games used in this one.

Funny how the game you are currently playing uses the term DPS in the actual game. Just go to the duty finder menu while playing as DPS class. You will see it on there. So might as well get use to the fact that it is part of the game, just like many others.
