Tanks get asked to use "taunt" because you have a few of them, in the case of GLD/PLD you have Shield Lob and Flash, both skills whose primary or only purpose is to generate enimity, these are collectively known as "Taunts" and the healer yelling that at the tank is leaving the choice of which one to use up to the Tank, just as long as them mob stops chewing on the healer.Couldn't agree more. I don't think it has anything to do with WoW hate, but rather learning this game's terminology. We have tells (not whispers), tanks have been asked to use taunt (which I'm assuming is provoke), guilds instead of linkshells/free companies, calling archer "hunter," and I think you get the point. lmao I think people have used one set of terms for so long, they tend to think they're universal.
and as to most people using Guild instead of Free Company/Linkshell... Guild is more ubiquitous as it has been used since the "Dawn of MMOs". A few games have sought to give them their own name (Free Company/Linkshell. Troop, League...etc) the catch all that most people understand is Guild.

I don't mind people who use different terms. but personally I dislike the terms... "Threat" when used to describe your enmity/hate, "Taunt" used to describe the act of claiming enmity/hate, "Pally" to describe PLD, "Degen"(Apparently for DoTs?), people calling the Adds on Demon wall "Bees' when they're clearly Gnats and theres actually bee mobs in this game so idkwtf, "DPS" used to describe Damage Dealers... Basically i dislike most of the accepted "MMO" terminology wherever it generated from... And i know I'm missing a lot.
So yah, continue using them, Its cool by me, I just dislike emI don't hate the people who use it, Its just a long list of terms I'd never catch myself saying, thats all.
Degen. that's a good one. lol. i saw someone say yesterday "I need a 50 GSM for a meld pst whisper"... huh? at least they got the pst part right. xDI don't mind people who use different terms. but personally I dislike the terms... Part of the reason I think wc didn't get adopted as wrong chat/channel for XI is in part due to the game having a strong international base. And wc can also stand for Water Closet, and for those not familiar, a Water Closet is a term for a Restroom/bathroom in other countries.btw...as someone who's played MMOs BEFORE WoW (in fact I never played WoW and usually have no clue what people mean with WoW terms unless I already know them from .other. games where they also use WoW terms instead of the game's terms.... like 'mt' used to confuse the HELL out of me in SWTOR because TOR DOES NOT HAVE TELLS IT HAS WHISPERS DAMMIT!! and LOTRO used 'wc' for 'wrong chat/channel')...
Doesn't really bother me, unless it is used in the wrong context. DPS or DD (never used DD before), I don't care, if that's the standard here, then I can adjust to it. I won't enforce what I'm use to others.
On a not so important note, DPS actually means Damage Per Second, and is actually a statistic information, rather than a description of player roles. Compared to DD (which I assume means Damage Dealer), which is actually more accurate and appropriate in cases like "I'll be DD", rather than "I'll be DPS". But really, I don't care, I understand what the person is trying to say.
People using PUG instead of PGL kinda bugs me, since to me a PUG has always been a random group thrown together. Or a dog if you want :P
DPS makes 0 sense to me, and I'm not sure who originally had the bright idea to use it. Seriously, why would you refer solely to 'DD' classes as 'damage per second' lol? Damage per second is not an adjective. Grammatically it makes no sense to use this term to 'describe' damage dealing classes.
TOON. kills me every time.
