As long as people use a term FFXIV uses itself like dps from DF or PLD as short for paladin, on the other hand pally isnt really okFor some reason the use of terms like "DPS" instead of DD, and "Pally" instead of PLD, bug me and I can't really say why. It's not that I dislike WoW. I've played WoW for 5+ years. I thoroughly enjoyed the game until recently.
Is it because I expect only FFXI terminology to be used? I can't really say. I'm not really sure what it is or why it bugs me to see terminology from other games used in this one.
I remember when people argued in shout if it was smn or sum lol >.>
The Dev team uses the term, "DPS" when describing the game, in some of their Dev videos. So, I'm pretty sure if the guys who made the game are using it in describing their game, that it's also part of this game. For some reason the use of terms like "DPS" instead of DD, and "Pally" instead of PLD, bug me and I can't really say why. Also, DD means, "direct damage", and doesn't necessarily mean the same thing anymore. Games have evolved to where damage is coming from many different sources - some direct, and some indirect (a poisonous area on the ground is considered an in-direct source of damage, as are most environmental effects).
DPS is a universal measurement of damage from ALL measurable sources over a set period of time.

A shout saying
/shout LF 1 dps
Is actually saying
/shout looking for 1 damage per second
Which really makes me want to join and auto attack and go on about how awesome im doing for doing more damage than what's expected.
Only in FFXI does "DD" = "damage dealer"DD is "damage dealer", so its actually the universal term.

Everywhere else, DD is used to describe an ability. DD, DoT, HoT, DH, AoE DD, AoE DoT... these are all terminologies used in the earliest MMOs, predating FFXI.
And a shout saying "LF 1 DPS" is actually saying "looking for 1 dps". You believe "dps" is an abbreviation, but its actually become a colloquial noun, sort of like how "tank" doesn't actually mean tank, or how "mob" doesn't actually mean mob.
DD I have only seen in FFXI, DPS everywhere else. This game even refers to them as DPS, I think "Pally" is something from Diablo? Definitely remember hearing it before WoW.For some reason the use of terms like "DPS" instead of DD, and "Pally" instead of PLD, bug me and I can't really say why. It's not that I dislike WoW. I've always read DD as Damage Dealer
Therefore, DPS is something you do. DD is what you are.
This is how I looked at it too, until I started playing WoW. It was odd seeing people asking for more DPS for their group.
As I stated before, though, "DPS" doesn't bug me (I use the term myself), I just used it as an example.
It's things like "Pally" or "Toon" or "Aggro/Threat" that just make me wanna facepalm for some reason.

I was thinking about this recently.
None of it bothers me in any way, but I was questioning to a friend why we call the hit point reducers "dps" or "dpsers".
They aren't damage per seconders. They are hit point reducers. Their DPS is a stat of their character, not what their character is. So when I see Damage Dealer in this game, I think, hey...that actually makes more sense.
...but then I throw out a call in my FC and say "any DPS wanna come do WP?"
like I said, none of it bothers me, but DPS makes no sense when I think about it now.
Canada will rule the world with a green thumb, instead of an iron fist.
I spent my time in WoW so I'm familiar with the terms, but I always had a preference for the FFXI terms since even though I quit WoW I was always playing FFXI. The term pally does drive me up the wall though, regardless of the game I hate that nickname as much as Major Nelson hates Xbone.
