Can someone please explain the logic behind why I am unable to send tells when on "duty" missions (ie dungeons and certain quests)?

It's because you're on another word, and you cannot message others from other worlds.
That and mostly because SE thinks people will abuse it by talking shit about each other in private during a dungeon...le sigh
its because the instance takes place on a completely different server. just ask what server your party members play on the next time you are in a duty. You can't "tell" because it's not connecting to any normal server... you guys are cut off from everything at that moment. You can't trade either i believe.

why would they design it like this, why make a social game then remove the social aspect .......
You can still speak in your FC/LS when in an instance.
You may be on another server and another 'world' for the instances, but I also disapprove of the tell restriction.
If you notice, if you applied your free company crest to your armor. It goes to a faded default logo.
Tanking in MMO's for over 10 years.
"For by fire, I am reborn!"
Like someone said above, the instance servers are different servers. I actually prefer not getting tells and such while in a instance. Sure, I break down all the crap spam into separate windows, but tells just tend to distract people at times and honestly, I would prefer a healer or tank to be paying attention to what's is going on in the group instead of some gil spammer sending them a message they have to try and blist. As for not being able to trade while in instances, that is common with many games that have people from different servers grouped for a instance. I agree it is sad that FC members can't trade while in a instance but that just means some pre-planning needs to occur.
