If you want to be a scholar, yes. May seem daunting, but you will get a boost to xp for having a class higher than the one you are leveling, and you know how to level those early levels.

Plus, you will have those extra skills from past class to use on arcanist, which really does help.

Yeah thats what I figured, thanks.

One more, shouldn't my other character show up on the Classes tab on my new alt?

You're misunderstanding the Armoury System. You don't need an alt in order to level any and each class/job up. You actually level them up on your main character.
In order to unlock Scholar you don't have to level an arcanist, but level arcanist up on your character instead (see the difference?).
Get your main character to the arcanists' guild @ Limsa Lominsa and join the guild. Equip the weapon you're given by the guildmaster and BAM! now you're an arcanist. Your progress as a Conjurer is saved and you can change back just by equipping your Conjurer's arm. Once you reach arcanist level 30 you can unlock scholar because you have already level up Conjurer to 15.

IIRC, that's not accurate. You get an exp boost for 'sub-classes' once you reach level 50 with a combat class. In other words, first you have to level a combat class up to 50 and then you get that exp boost on the other combat classes.

No, the original method described is correct. So long as another combat class is higher than your current one, you get an xp boost. This works starting at level 10 when you can first switch classes.
