    I paid a blacksmith to craft one for me. I think it required an iron ingot and I was able to provide this so it didn't cost me much.

    Yeah, no you didn't. You got the Initiate's Culinary Knife ( http://xivdb.com/?recipe/85/Initiate's-Culinary-Knife ) with that iron ingot. The next craftable knife is the Steel Culinary Knife ( http://xivdb.com/?recipe/112/Steel-Culinary-Knife ). The one the topic creator wants however, which is strangely missing from the game as all Novice sub-tools are is the Novice's Culinary Knife ( http://xivdb.com/?item/2512/Novice's-Culinary-Knife ).
