I'm pretty happy with the class (mechanics). Also I don't see a problem with how the summons look.
Don't get me wrong though, I understand the frustration if you try to compare FFXI and FFXIV - the summons here do not compare looks wise.

I am happy with how the class plays. Not happy with the current pet control system, very hard to use and the look at the Engines. I choose Summoner because I thought the Engine are gonna be epic once you summon, turn out the let down though.
ifirit is still good post 50 with trash mobs, only use garuda for bosses, and first time I ran through the praetorium (w/e its called) our tanks left at the last boss but it was me and 2 other smn and we all used titan to tank and won lol
Anyone got any thoughts about the viability of splitting attributes between int and mind?
I really want to be able to use both scholar AND summoner so that I can switch between DPS or healer role depending on the needs of my friends and company-mates, as well as to give myself extra flexibility in the field. But you have the attribute straight-jacket, that summoner needs int and scholar mind, if I split the attributes would it be a serious detriment to progression play?
Love my SMN.
On the topic of stat points. Because I also love my SCH, I put everything in MND. I had everything in INT before but even on SMN a full INT boost is such a minimal boost to damage that really it wasn't worth it. Even the extra MND for my SMN's Physics was noticeable. All MND for me. Full out ONLY SMN people I would still say INT is the way to go though.

Lemme just check if i'm doing my role as a SMN right, in dungeons and boss fights I always keep my DoTs applied to enemies and while waiting spam Ruin I. (Because I'm still level 35, so I only have Bio 2 > Miasma > Bio > Thunder > Virus [I use this on bosses or tough enemies only])
As I'm waiting for the DoTs, I spam 1 or 2 Ruin I, Aetherflow (when available to keep MP in check) and energy Drain. Is that okay?
I'm still new about pet positioning so I just put them on the side so they won't be caught by AoE.
Spamming Rune at your level is ok but only use 2 if you want a quick little burst at the end of a fight (Rune 1 then instant 2) or if Blind is needed/not completely worthless cause you have a PLD using flash. Help out with healing if need be.
As for positioning. At your level it is pretty much pointless to worry about positioning. Pets have an constant effect AoE damage reduction and wont be hurt all that bad by anything at your level. Really other than making sure that they aren't standing in a field effect like Brayfrox poison or needing to move them over the square in sunken temple to remove doom(which is simply hell to keep doing by the way) it isn't worth the time.
The main thing you need to make sure you are doing is USING OBEY when needed. All three of our Egis have an AoE ability that they will use even if mobs around them are asleep. So many SMNs that I get into a Duty Finder party with while I am on another job wake mobs up because they do not use the Obey command. It is a clunky and slugish pet interface right now but it is something that you NEED to learn and learn well.

Can someone please refer me to a thread that discusses SMN's rotation? Didnt want to create a thread to ask so I thought that I'd ask here.
We can discuss rotations here too. But there are some rotation discussions in this thread:
