I have a higher ranked lancer than a gladiator. On my gladiator I get more physical exp than on my lancer when defeating a monster. this seems to always happen.

Well, its expected to since your LNC is higher ^^: The SP and EXP gain is based not only on rank difference between you and the monster but also at your overall rank. The EXP also follow these rules, being affected by the current class rank and not by your physical level.
It's intentional.
At rank 1 , you get massive bonuses to experience then gradually less every few ranks until rank 24.
Also as Lienn pointed out, being higher rank changes the rank difference between you and the enemy which is used to calculate experience gain. Physical level doesn't do anything.
Or maybe you mean you are getting more physical EXP while getting the same SP?
