In other words, they should be able to make enough gil to cover repairs and basic consumables and have a small bit left over. Their funds should be trending positive over time, albeit at a very slow rate. In my opinion, a casual player who only is interested in combat should be able to functionally enjoy the game their way, as long as they avoid luxury/vanity gilsinks.

Players who invest a lot of time into DoH/DoL, on the other hand, should be making money at a significantly faster rate than those who don't.
And I agree, but there are ways for battle classes to get the gil they need, many of which are covered in this thread.
    This isn't up for debate.
    This has never been true.

I suggest you go to the marketplace and find out what leathers or cloth sell well. Then go and kill those types of beasties for a while. The most contested stuff isnt worth it though. You might wanna kill some boars or raptors or similar, since they have a good number of them in the world. About an hours worth of killing will net you 50k ish if you go with those types of skins. At the same time youre spiritbinding your stuff. When its bound convert it and get a new piece, then sell the materia, untill you are solvent again.
edit: the 50 k was based on my own hour of raptor killing, since both leathers, sinews sell well as hq and nq. This was on a bard. I cant say what the average kill rate would be for a non ae class.

    Just my 2cents
You CAN do that. Minus the teleports, those are silly expensive. You just won't get rich quick if you refuse to dabble in the crafts.

Run battle levequests, guildhests as a tank (queues quickly, pays better than you think on re-runs), zerging FATEs. It doesn't look like a lot of gil coming up, but it sums up. If you're not using your top gear and spending tons of gil on repairs—profit.

Also, if you're not completely anti-social, find friends who will make you basic gear for free, so you can keep exchanging equipment, spiritbond/convert it, and sell Materia on a side; this way you don't even have to pay for repairs. You can arrange to split the profits with the people providing your gear.

And none of this is counting mats that drop from mobs you kill, you can sell those as well.

Leves do not take money from other people. I'm making mad gil doing fishing leves some which can be completed 3 times in a row. If you turn in HQ items thats even more money from just one leve. I then sell most crappy fish to vendor. Also doing fates gains you money which does not take away from anyone else. I also ran dungeons for all my gear, I didnt waste silver and gold pieces choosing crappy gear when I could get way better from dungeons. I am making money everyday and I am not taking one gil from other players like lots of people are doing in this game.

This is I normally made money.
    - If I want to kill monsters, I'll just go to CM/AK/etc and sell the tomestones for crafting mats -> sell the current most expensive one at market
    - Craft some item that is easy to HQ and has particular Levequest that need them (for example HQ Hi-pot), stack them on 15 and this sell well
    - Gather shards, sell them all. Though this one is not good time-wise
    - /shout Materia melding services

Hey about Fishing Leves, how profitable it is? like gill award each leve. I'm trying to level up one of gathering class and see if Fishing is worth to take

There's lots of gill in fishing. Sometimes there's even some gil, too.

I think the problem here is that fate spamming has allowed TONS of people to hit 50 with a battle class while completely ignoring money. Even with questing you have gear and other goodies tossed at you in such a way as to render all crafted gear 1-49 a luxury and unnecessary.

Once the gravy train has ended and there are no more easy quests like, talk to person X in zone Y, wow that was tough so here's your 3 allagan gold pieces, people are now stuck with high end gear requiring large repair bills and super expensive materia with no clue how to make money.

There are plenty of ways to make huge amounts of gil with only a battle class at 50 but since fates don't teach you how to spiritbond gear or sell tomestone ingredients people are at a loss.

Fishing, especially compared to botany and mining, it's very fun and interesting.
This means that's there no profit in it.

You want gil? You have to be annoyed and bored to death.
