I'm sorry but what are you on about? Where did I say they were going to "port" anything? That doesn't even make sense nor is it remotely feasible. There's not much to "reimagine". They will pair the bosses up with variations on already existing mechanics most closely based on the original versions. They're not going to port DS models into one of the prettier FF games. They're going to remake, re-animate, and re-render the models as they should be - an FFXIV reimagine of FFIII bosses.
Plus, FFXIV isn't a turn-based game with an ATB battle system, or anything even remotely close to the handhelds. They'll have to reimagine the mechanics to work with the system already in place.
I didn't say it messes up the backstory, I asked what the point of having a unique one is, especially if they're just going to jumble all sorts of random things in instead of coming up with something new related to 14's story. I've yet to see a more than a single mention of the reason as to why this dungeon was chosen (Xande being changed into Xandes) with a regards to story so I would love to read about it if you can provide a link to where they talk about it.It doesn't mess up the backstory. They have already mentioned that any fan service boss will have reason to be here. Maybe you never played FFIII, but the crystal tower exists outside time and space, and can cross dimensions, therefore, it can be easily explained why it would be here. Same with why Lightening can actually make sense here. Valhalla is the place between worlds.
References are one thing (characters named Cid, Biggs, Wedge, Chocobos, familiar spell names, etc) an entire dungeon bosses and all is a little more than just a reference IMO. To me there's a difference between calling an optional Lighting-based FATE a "nod" and doing the same for an entire raid dungeon that's at least in some way mandatory. It was mentioned a long time ago that they were going to throw a lot of old FF references into ARR, dungeons, story, certain fights, whatever. If thats really gonna bother you, might want to look for another game to play. I personally welcome the "rehashed" content. Its fun to fight old bosses with your own character years later after seeing it the first time in sprite/chip-tune format with different heroes altogether. My personal favorite so far was getting to see Demon Wall again. Loved the FF4 version, FF7 was barely a nod though, so this was nice.
The story for it isn't released yet, so I can't link you the story, but, as I previously stated, neither of these are a far stretch, as both the Crystal Tower and Valhalla (where Lightening resides) exists outside of normal space time and can connect to all dimensions. There are lots of enemies they could do this with. Ozma and Necron from IX, Zeromus from IV, a creature of the same race as Jenova (as she was an alien and they never say where she came from), any of the Espers from VI (as their village lay in another dimension), Garlemond and Kuja from IX (as Terra lay in a parallel dimension from Gaia in that game), the Elementals from IV (and seriously, who doesn't want to see Rubicante in this game?), Lavos from the Chrono series, the Wave Existence from Xenogears (please SE... Please give Xenogears some love), etc. The list is endless.
