I keep getting this too. The last time (this morning), I logged in and was just standing around Camp Dragonhead and got a random invite with no message. It could have been a FATE group looking to fill slots, but I didn't want to join one (I certainly never asked in /shout), so I declined and moved on.

I vaguely recall something happening like this in Warcraft. I accepted it, back then, and it was an extra annoying gold spammer who wanted to advertise to me in the most invasive way possible. So I would say, just decline and move on. Blacklist the person if they're really bothering you.

Luckily, it was only the one person that outright followed me around and asked me about three times to invite me to his party and friend request me, everyone else seems to accept that I've declined and moved on.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who things this is annoying though.

sometimes people are killing things above there lvl, is easier if u have smn healing u; or just farming, is easier in a party.
Also, sadly: EU seems to end up in NA servers ( no sure why / what the issue was) so some cant ask, and the auto translate (which i discover recently) imho is quite hard ( no that is an excuse, but..)

i had this char invite me to his party to heal him while he killed a monster lvl 31 for a quest (we lvl 29)
him: "together? u heal me? i attack X?
me: we are a lil low and area c 31, but give it a shoot
    him: sorry, no? no eng
    me: <invite to party>

some might be more shine about their eng or no english.. or like u hard to type

i always ask, but i dont mind the blind unvite (friends invite is a whole different thing) i can leave whenever, i might end up making another friend, could give me extra exp/mats... so why not?. and beside karma: " today you, maybe tomorrow me"

but at the end, your preference. just try to see the good side
    enjoy.

I don't mind playing with people, and I've gone through dungeons without needing to communicate all that much. But even so, if I could get a simple, "Hello, I need help with a mob, can you help me?" or something to that effect (a beckoning emote will do as well), I wouldn't mind at all being invited, since, you know, I would actually know what the invite is for. Otherwise, I will decline and move on.

yeah it's nothing bad at all, you just want to play your game that's all

I don't always accept blind invites either. Sometimes I know why I'm getting the invite even though no one has asked me to join, I.E. Dungeon invite etc. depending on the time I have, and what I'm doing, depends on whether I'll accept the invite or not. If it's a blind invite I'll usually not say anything just decline, I don't see anything wrong with it, and if that's how you prefer to play, don't let anyone else dictate to you.

I agree completely. I call this "Ambush Friend-ing" and don't like it. I will automatically decline an ambush request. If you want my help, ASK for it. I'm a nice guy, and I actually enjoy being helpful, but I want to know WHY I should suddenly interrupt my plans to accommodate a stranger.

Does not compute. Why would it be any easier for someone else on a PS3 to start communicating than it would be for you?

In general, in most MMOs I've been in, it's considered rude to randomly invite someone to anything (party, guild, whatever). The only time I've seen it happening in FFXIV have been FATEs and when I've been killing hunting log mobs, and I give both of those a pass on being rude. FATEs, I could see, especially for a healer (who actually wants to heal). It's a heck of a lot easier to heal someone in your party than someone outside it, and in the middle of a FATE, there isn't a lot of time to type out pleasantries. Hunting logs do go faster if you're partied with someone who's after the same mob. And if the goal is speed, I don't feel the need to slow the process down myself with chit chat. I'm fine partying up, getting the kills, and dropping group without a word (beyond maybe a hello).

And that's the other side of the coin. For the couple of situations where I can see random invites being acceptable, I also don't see randomly declining, or accepting and then randomly dropping, being any less acceptable. Just not a big deal to me either way.

I've also had someone invite me to a group completely by accident. I don't know how. He's a member of my FC, though, and I recognized the name, so I accepted. It was in the middle of a FATE, so I imagine just random clicking on his part.

Edit: Just to be clear, I'm not trying to say you should accept the invites, or that the burden should be on you to communicate. I'm just saying for a couple specific instances, especially given the difficulty PS3 players without a keyboard have with communication, I see the typical etiquette as being a little different in this game. It's not ideal, but I get it, and I don't have a problem with it.

Blind invites (except in the midst of a FATE) are pretty rude. If the person inviting does not communicate then I will not accept. It's as simple as that. They invite - they should communicate. Otherwise it is just a spam invite.

I also dislike blind invites (especially FC invites). Last time I accepted a blind party invite was a guy a few levels lower than the area. I assumed he needed help with a mission I had done earlier, and I could use the help on my current mission so I accepted. As soon as I accepted he ran into a bunch of mobs and started fighting, no dialogue. I ran in an joined the fight, and as soon as it was done (he finished his mission) he quit the party and ran off, never said a word. So I don't accept blind invites anymore.

The total lack of any communication reminds me of some pretty bad duty finder dungeons I ran in the level 15 series. No communication whatsoever - it was pretty soulless.
