Does this game support 5.1? If so can some PC Boffin help me

Right this problem is not strictly limited to FFXIV but I have no idea where else I might be able to get help with my issue as Google has not been able to provide me with the answer.

Basically I want my PC to output 5.1 to my surround sound amp. I have tried via HDMI to TV which can pass through the signal to the amp via an Optical Cable and I have tried using the S/Pdif output on the back of my PC directly to my amp using an Optical Cable but still no joy.

When I go to sound in control panel and select either source the only option I have is 2.0 stereo and there is no option for 5.1 and I have no idea how to activate it. I just tried installing something called Realtek HD audio drivers as I was told that might solve it, but it didn't change anything.

These are the specs for my PC and I am sure there must be a way to get 5.1 from it, I have a little Acer Revo downstairs that is plugged into the TV that can manage it through HDMI so was sure this would be able to:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition
    CPU Cooler: Coolermaster Hyper TX3
    Operating System: Windows 7
    Motherboard: Asus M4A87TD USB3 Included
    Memory: 8.0GB Corsair DDR3 1600mhz XMS3 CL9
Hard Drives: Corsair 60GB Force SSD
    Second hard drive: 2TB S-ATAII 3.0Gb/s
    Optical Drive: 22x DVD±RW DL S-ATA Lightscribe
Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 6950 2GB
Sound card: Onboard 7.1 Audio Included
    Case: Zalman Z9 Plus
    PSU: 650W Corsair TX Ultra-Quiet

If anyone could be of help I would be eternally grateful.

i dont know why you dont have the option to set 5.1 in your control panel... try to config it in playback devices ----> speakers ---> configure, not in the realtek control panel

No joy still the same stuck to 2.0, keep looking around on the internet but everything I find is 4+ years old for older equipment.

I too would like to do this. Can it be done through the regular mini phono/headphone jack?

Hm, I've been playing around with it but my problem now is that my Nvidia 470 is outputting the 2ch sound over HDMI. It doesn't appear to support 5.1. And if I send 5.1 out through mini phono my Bose system overrides it to the empty HDMI audio channel. So I appear to be screwed for the moment. Alexia, check out your sound settings under Control Panel. You can see a list of your audio devices and what sound channels they support. That should be the first step.

Hmmm. Well, I was playing around with my own settings and I have the options for it. First guess would be that for some reason you're using default windows drivers that are sub-par. My recommendation would be to hit up the ASUS website and check out the support site for your motherboard. Look for the latest drivers. Alternately, use the drivers that came on the CD with your mobo and then see if windows update will update them.
