ah okay great! i'll definitely have to do that when I get home. Does anyone have any advice on where to start/what to do? Any ideas what craft to start either?

The quests will lay out a path for you. Follow the storyline quests chain (these have a unique icon pointed out to you at the start), do your class quests (one right at the start, one every five levels thereafter), and sidequests to level sufficiently to keep the storyline chain going, and you should do fine. You won't be able to change classes until you do the level 10 class quest for your starting class. I'd advise holding off on crafting or gathering until you reach level 17 in the storyline and unlock retainers; the additional storage space and ability to sell things on the market will be needed. It will likely take you a few days to get that far, and you may have ideas of your own on what you want to craft by that point. And good luck! The new FFXIV is, in my opinion, a great game. I hope you'll enjoy it.
I definitely enjoy it so far! just a little confusing at times. So I have to do a quest every 5 levels to be able to keep leveling? and once I hit level 10 I can just change classes to any of the starter classes right?

No, the class quests don't block you from leveling. The class quest at 10 (for your starting class) is what unlocks your ability to join the other class guilds and switch classes. The class quest at 15 rewards you with an ability you won't get any other way. So they're important. But not doing them doesn't keep you from leveling. (Personally, I don't worry about them on my additional classes until 15, for the ability; if I'm near the guild when I hit 5 or 10, great, I'll pick up the quest, but if I'm not, I'll just keep going until it's convenient to do the quests(s).)

Once you've done the level 10 class quest, you will be able to unlock another class by going to that class's guild. Since getting to the other cities is not practical until the level 15 storyline quests unlock airship travel, you won't be able to access the classes that aren't in your home city until then. Once a class is unlocked, you can switch to it simply by equipping the weapon/tool for that class (spear for Lancer, bow for Archer, saw for Carpenter, hatchet for Botanist, and so on), which you can do whenever you're not in combat.
