IMO you can use macro keyboard (either hardware or software), joystick with auto-mode, or putting something on your keyboard to make it auto-play.... only if you're actually playing the game and watching your monitor all the time. If you do that while you're not watching the monitor and GM appears to ask you some question and you can't reply then you'll be banned.

They're not going to ban you for not looking at your screen for 10 minutes.

If he does it for hours on end? Absolutely.

Very simple: GM should pop up an extra window that cannot be hidden, with a sound effect. If you fail within a given period of time to reply while still moving and performing actions within the game, then you are essentially considered a bot.

While it is possible that this sort of behaviour is "legitimate", using it as a justification for not banning is essentially removing the capacity to counteract bots. It is also a behavior that doesn't add anything significant to gameplay experience; it is effectively the next step up from botting (lets call it interactive botting). Let's put it simply; it's a small price to pay to remove the legitimacy of being able to play the game without looking at the screen for extended periods of time to be able to more easily detect and deal with bots.

As for the "this is a blind player who for some reason enjoys standing in one place and hitting buttons that offer him almost no feedback at all"; set him up a sound board with buttons on it that match the abilities of his class. Come on, talk about extrapolating to absurd lengths to justify a behavior.

I afs (away from screen XD) all the time. I'm still here pushing buttons. You can't be reported because a player saw you doing something without SE getting access to actual proof. If it worked that way I could run around sending a report to SE about numerous innocent people and they would get banned just because he said/she said.

This community is so weird... You people spend so much time worrying about what others are doing and begging the GMs to punish a player... Its just weird.

If a GM sends you a /tell and you don't respond in what they consider a reasonable time get ready to see the inside of Mordion.

It would probably take several offences to get banned.

it is truly sad to see the pitchfork crowd in here, doubly more so when they're demonstrating so much ignorance on the subject.

Just about all of the arguments boils down to these:

    1. He's botting! ban him!

No the OP did not, using in-game macros is not botting,.

    2. He looked away/was not looking at the screen!!

What the OP, or anyone for that matter, do or don't do in front of their PC/PS3 is none of your business. If I want to watch a movie or browse the net or close my eyes and listen to some music, that's MY business. Who are you to tell me what I can or can't do? The sheer arrogance displayed through this attitude is mind-boggling.

    3. It's ok do ban people like OP because it'll help catch some bots!!

I'm not sure which is more sad, that you think it's fine to punish players who have done nothing wrong, or that /tell is the primary means for GM to figure out someone is a bot or not.

    4. Wahhhhh, I'm trying to farm these valuable mats in this MMO, but there are other people who are better at claiming the mobs than me...BAN THEM!!!

Maybe you should consider single player games instead?

Macros are an authorized means to play, as long as YOU are the one starting them every time. (Which they were, with a controller, as they watched TV.)

This rule is specifying he need to be the person inputting the commands, and he is.

He doesnt have to look at the screen, he just needs to be the one using in game options to control their character.

A macro being activated by you, mashing a button, while looking somewhere else, is you being there.

In FFXI there was clarification on this very subject, and GMs stated, you need to respond to GM tells, if they feel you may be using another source to input commands.
You're allowed to use macros, you're allowed to look away fromt he screen, AND you're allowed to ignore GM tells.

BUT you can NOT ignore GM tells, if they are under the impression you are not in control of your character.

PS EDIT: The GMs also said not responding to a tell isnt enough evidence to have a perma ban, but a temporary lock on the account, until you respond. (In most cases, the GM doesnt send tells, they have been seen teleporting players to new locations, to see how they interact with the environment.)

Not looking at your screen while executing a macro qualifies as unattended play, just look up the definition of unattended. unattended is not automated play, which seems people are confused, executing a macro has nothing to do with unattended. there is a separate section ot deal with automation.

I do not thing its a big deal, certainly not something I would ban someone for, but I would without a doubt say it was unattended. That in and of itself is not a big deal though.
