Somewhat new to the game, have a question.

Hey all, I started playing final fantasy on Saturday, and am really enjoying it. I have one question, I'm playing lancer, is dragoon worth jumping into when I get a chance? What type of armor do they wear? Is it heavy ish? As I also love the look of paladins and marauders.

You can actually level all classes so if you feel Lancer isn't what you want, you can after lv10 start another job. But I suggest go until lv15 where you get access to other grand cities (so you can change to anything rather than other thing on Grindania for e.g.)

Aye, no know about this but thanks haha, I mean is the dragoon a good class? I enjoy the lancer a lot and the dragoon sounds pretty cool, but I'd just like to know, is his dos adequate, does he wear any cool armor?, I know currently I am looking into a 180sub as I'm really enjoying it, one of the better mmorpgs I've played, could even away it's close to the top.

I just played lancer on Beta3 so can't help much, but Dragoon has cool armor, looks just like FF4 Kain's.

For other images, google "ffxiv dragoon armor"

Dragoon is a job, not a class, meaning anything they get, can be used by their base class, which is Lancer. so anything your lancer can use, will transfer to Dragoon. This also means that dragoon will not level up or gain experience. Instead any experience you gain, goes back to that job's base class, which is lancer for Dragoon. So there really is no reason to not use a job, unless you're intent it to use a myriad of cross class skills(as jobs give you access to only 3 class skills, the base class, the secondary, and one other).

Once you hit level 30 and finish your class quests, your guild will have another quest to offer you that will require you to get another class to level 15 (if you talk to the NPC with the quest while it's locked, it will say what class you need). This leads into the Job Quests which happen every 5 levels up to level 50, with the first quest unlocking an ability and the Soul Stone for the job. You change between Dragoon and Lancer by equipping or removing the Soul Stone.

The most important thing to keep in mind, as was alluded to earlier, is that you don't stop being a lancer when you become a dragoon. When you equip the soulstone, the following changes occur:

1: Your receive a stat adjustment. While the class (lancer) is built to be soloable, able to do a variety of things well, a job is more polarized. Your stats will be adjusted to reflect this role, something like more strength while lowering vitality and mind. I don't know the exact changes for lancer into dragoon, so this is just an example.

2: You gain access to job abilities. There's 5 in total, you receive them by going through the job quest line. These are the main reason to use a job over a class.

3: Your cross-class abilities are restricted. Not only do you lose access to abilities from all classes except three (which three depends on your job), but you can also only allocate half as many. This is perhaps the biggest thing that moves jobs more to party play than solo play, as depending on your class you can lose out on important abilities like cure and protect.

4: You can equip new equipment. The artifact armor, which you receive by doing the job questline (All level 45, except for the body which is level 50), is job only. In addition, you can eventually upgrade it to item level 90 Relic armor, which is also only usable by the job, not the class. There are also relic weapons (item level 80, can be upgraded to 90), which can only be used as a job.

To summarize, the only thing you lose is cross-class abilities and the stat penalty may not be kind for soloing purposes. Other than that, you receive a ton of bonuses. Really, outside of niche situations you'll rarely ever use lancer over dragoon.
