As a grouped duo with two dps classes, looks like every time we attack a mob we pull two mobs. Alone we only pull one. When your lv 5 and you pull a lv 5 and that lv 17 next to him, makes for a bad day. Anyway to only pull one mob? Thanks!

I've noticed this too with my wife, some mobs "link" (term used for a mob being engaged in combat to agro another mob along with it) more when teamed up.
It seems this is intended, as with if you are higher lvl compared to a mob, they will link with a greater number.
You should be able to see, when targeting, the "link" lines extending from your primary target to any targets around it that will link.
Just watch for those lines when you select a target, and if it connects with a 17... maybe move a little further away and go onto something else.
Be sure to enable link lines in your config. Sometimes it helps to pull in a direction where there is no cross traffic from mobs. It might require tremendous going out of your way but sometimes that is better than training a bunch at one time. Draw line from where you wish to drag that mob, to where you are dragging it from and if there is anything in the path that links, find a new path.I've noticed this too with my wife, some mobs "link" (term used for a mob being engaged in combat to agro another mob along with it) more when teamed up.

Hai! I'm Vahl, in ur mmorpgs, sort'n my inventory and putt'n 2 many H's in my name since FFXI..FFXIV Inventory Tetris Champ
This is actually a very very nice feature if you're grinding out targets in a party, although it can be dangerous if you don't know what's going on. Adding chocobos seems to never cause more things to link (even though it makes you a party). So that helps considerably, although so does not leveling 2 DPS classes with no healer around.
The Level 5 + 17 sounds like you picked up something around the starter areas where there are giant "imposing" mobs which you get to feel good pwning on shortly, just try to watch where you plant yourselves to grind things out and watch for those "monster party" lines!
Somehow, the subject line prompted me to see if I could suggest marriage counseling or other alternatives. Never mind.

As Teleniel said, this is a feature in the game that is only really an issue in the starting areas. Just stay away from groups of enemies that have high level enemies near them. I believe the enemies to watch out for are Treants in Gridania, Adamantoise in Ul'dah, and Goobbue in Limsa. Since you are in a group of 2, the enemies will respond by grouping up as well and will assist each other 2 at a time.
You can somewhat prepare for this by targeting an enemy. When you target an enemy yellow "assist" lines will fly between them and the enemy(ies) they will call for help.
This also applies when you are a high level character or group attacking a low level enemy, more enemies will link as the enemies try to match your party strength.
Once you leave the starting areas there will no longer be high level enemies mixed with low level ones, so you shouldn't have any issues then. In the meantime, you can actually NOT party and just assist each other with kills. which would make enemies attack one at a time. If you both do enough damage to the enemy, you will both get XP, and quest and hunting log credit. Later, team up for kills as having multiple enemies engage you at once speeds up the process.
Easiest way to avoid this is to attck mobs one lvl higher then at least one of you, as soon as u both are at level with the mob you attack it will bring a friend
This was a feature added near the end of 1.X, when they made enemies weaker, so you could grind them faster, they introduced that linking system.
If the system determines that your combined combat prowess is greater then that of an enemy, when pulled it will link.
As stated above when targeting enemies for the first time, you can tell if it's going to link via a yellow line.
This system is also an allusion of previous titles, as battles would feature random assortment of weaker enemies

you can actually see some of the link enemies.. they show this kind of line btw them that flash every so often.. but no all f them
sorry no too useful info.. but i was happy to noticed this the 1st time..
Noticed if you hover your cursor over a mob, a yellow line shoots out the mob you hovered over and into 1 or a few others, indicating that if that mob, or the ones linked to it is pulled, all of them get pulled with it, as if they were all tied to each other ~-~
So, you might be pulling a mob that's linked to 1 set, and your other might be pulling one linked to another set.
Made a new alt with 2 other friends other day. Let's just say we pulled what we wanted outside for a quest and had the whole herd of sheepies on us o.o;;
