True. I think if there was enough imperative to wear the appropriate gear (at the moment there isn't) then people will naturally impose the lvl restrictions themselves but the system would still gives some flexibility in case you didnt have the exact belt on you at the time.

I think the Optimal Rank system is the best one that can be introduced, lending itself to both freedom and restriction. It's almost a perfect compromise. When the stats actually make a difference, hopefull the system will show its true value.

When I first saw the gear in this game , i thought "okay so us allocating points to ourselves is the big difference characters", but it really isn't past a certain rank, sadly this must also be fixed, and I think it should be fixed with the battle system but I understand why it wouldn't be recalculated in time (also enmity should be fixed in this, but eh I'll see...maybe the new battle system will intrinsically need a new enmity system)

Interestingly enough, the early alpha had some gears that had bonuses /limitations based on your stats, i remember one crafter piece that was like +15 dex if dex is over 40. Its possible that in scrapping some of these types of gears/gear system, they made gear less effective, and made charachter stat selection less worthwhile

I didn't play Alpha so excuse my ignorance, but wasn't the alpha more "xi-ish", and even in respects to speed of battle system?

Not really, it was just slower than now. but the lag at that point was so insane, its really hard to tell what the battle system would have been like, because they had these timing meters that changed the properties of your attacks, and the lag was so bad it was kind of impossible to see if it was ever worth waiting, because it often wouldnt go through when you pressed the button.
The lag was reaaaaally bad on all fronts. There was two alphas with some major changes, i dont remember which was which at this point, but i know at one point you couldnt cross class equip, and optimal rank was required rank, people complained hard for level sync like gear that would just have less stats in these cases.

But yeah the game was never XI like even though it was a slower system than this one overall, you still had complete control of your charachter, and reactionary skills, they used to give you more sp per fight, i remember getting like 1k+ in long fights, even with the random sp system. It kind of favored fighting tough mobs, for me anyhow.

Mostly of course it was getting to the place, some of the makers were in places you could not get to without completing a certain portion of the story. Which basically makes those high level skins, you can only get for achieving great things. And that was fine.

While i am not married to gear and stats being linked, I am married to having high level/rare content reward you visually. It gives you things to work for, and too hunt, even in games with no stats tied to items, the costume unlock items still have a high value. People want to progress, and working towards getting cool looking gear is a big attraction to playing a game.

Its not about alienating newbs, its about making the game overall entertaining, in your system only money would be the ultimate goal, because you can buy everything visual.

I remember in ffxi, because i started early on, quite a few new players were amazed by my appearence, while for me it was a bit ehhhhhh embarassing? From what they told me, seeing a high level monk, when they were a monk, decked out in gear inspired them, and gave them something to aim for. That is immersive. Its just like in a racing game, you look at the cars, people who race well want to have cool cars, and people just starting want to strive to obtain those cars, not just thier stats.
I'm all about customization but rare skins are fine and totally set player goals. Personally though my absolute favorite armor in guild wars was actually just a regular set, though i did work to get the right stats on it (And a ton of red dye.)

yeah i was just saying that GW had a system that had rare hard to obtain armor, that you could only get by achieving some large goal, as well as normal armor.
