It's called realism. Anyone can wear anything but not everyone has the skill to wield everything skillfully.Ahh yes but optimal use could easily be changed to required class/rank and there would be little difference, besides the fact that people would have to stop being lazy and wear what they were meant to.
I duno what Tanaka was thinking when he came up with mix and match mash up.

When did realism have any weight in a fantasy world
How about a great big yellow arrow appears over there head with the words "I's a noob!"hmmm since this issue is all about having goals, and looks, more than anything. I think it would be a good idea, if when you wear an item out favor, or optimal, it has a visual change, basically some standard armor/gear look, of a low level variety that your class could equip, and if thats too non immersive for people, you could do something like making it have no color, just straight up grey or beige for the whole set. this would make it obvious when some one is wearing something unfavored/optimal as well make getting that next gear feeling like an achievement.
Anyother person who only reads half a thread, if you read the thread properly there have been suggestions made to combat the need to be stripped of armor when changing class.I agree with gifthorse's opening post: I, too, don't like being stripped naked when changing job/class/whatever. Let me wear what I want, when I want. I'll equip the proper rank gear myself if I have big business to do in that job/class/whatever, don't force me to when I don't need to.
All this aside it is clear that Yoshida also feel that the current class restrictions and rank restrictions need rebalancing, I can only hope that isn't swayed by the few loud voices on these forums.
It definately should be asked in the next poll though.
[dev1012] Higher visibility of the optimal rank of items
[dev1013] Reassessment of the gear affinities
[dev1014] Reexamination of class-based requirements for gear

Essentially yeah, it says im a noob, or, i could give a damn about this classes gear. I honestly think its a good solution. Because really the gear is already weaker than your optimal gear, and equiping anything non favored is super crappy, however people dont realize it.
Basically if they use a similar plan to mine, it will enhance class uniquness in looks, and add the desire to get higher level for that special cool looking gear. But, it still allows for equipping of a basic gear when you are not really concerned about it.
In the long run they may want to add something that allows you to customize your look completely and just use armor for stats, but this should probably be a high level or endgame thing, or maybe you should only be able to do that for gearskins in which you have actually obtained the proper rank/class, and the items. of course this would lower charachter/class/discipline uniqeuness look wise, but ehhhh.
