Chatting with a Controller

Dear Devs,

I'd like to ask something concerning chatting with a controller and as I can't find a thread specifically covering this very issue, I thought I could open one about it myself.

Unless I'm mistaken it seems that you can't play with a controller and chat at the same time. I usually put down my controller and reach for my keyboard but that solution is more than annoying, if you ask me. I use a 360 pad for which a happen to have a chatpad which makes typing on a console a breeze.

My question is, will we be allowed to use something like that in the near future?
Usually, when suggesting this to fellow players I get told to use a (USB) keyboard. But that doesn't quite cut it for me, as I grew rather fond of playing with an analog stick.
WASD and runnung on/off can go to hell now.

Are future console players expected to use a keyboard while playing on their couch? I hope not.

obviously I dont know, but I used a controller and used a keyboard to talk when playing xi on my 360 so its not out of the realms of possiblity that, that is what will be expected

You asking for a keyboard on a controller? or keyboard that you can use ingame with a controller like FFXI?

Exists for both XBOX360 and Playstation gamepads. Though it seems it isn't supported on the PC?

Basically, I was talking about something like this:

It would have solved the scrolling back to #1 for a normal attack every few seconds issue as well as you could have just pressed #1 on it.

And to answer to Eruantien:
If that's true I hope SE changes their mindset ASAP. They stressed pretty often that they're also aiming for casuals. And as much as I'm trying to I can't imagine a casual buying an USB keyboard. Let alone sitting with one on his laps on a couch.

Of course you'd have to buy a chatpad too... but it's way more comfortable that way.
And isn't this new XIV community screaming for that all the time?

i never have issue talking to players with keyboard and while using a controller and that keyboard seem very small you have to pretty much type with one finger i think i take longer then typing on keyboard which i type 30-49wpm

maybe SE can add something like that later

For PS3:
I guess they just have to implement a combo-key that lets you activate the TextBox, it'll be showing the digit bar and then the Keyboard Menu will be prompted like every PS3 game.

For PC:
I guess they just have to implement a combo-key that lets you activate the TextBox, then it'll be showing the digit bar so you can use your mini-keyboard embedded with the controller.

In conclusion, the solution here is simply a combination of buttons that will activate the chat.
