Don't quick synth if you can help it. I only do it if I plan to sell what I make and/or the HQ is not any different from the NQ (like lures and bait). Otherwise, I'll try to make it myself even if it takes a lot longer.

I'm a crafter Jim, not a Warrior! I don't want to fight as a Warrior just to be able to craft!

I din't do a single Leve, and yesterday I got my brand-new Weaver to 17 by making one of every item in the Crafting Log. You get an XP bonus the first time that you make an item.
Also, since we have to make a boatload of yarn/thread and cloth, I bumped up a level just grinding away on that stuff. One level for Undyed Hempen Cloth and another level for Undyed Cotton Cloth. Boring? Heck yeah! But you have to do it, so why not get it out of the way right away?
Aside: Because I don't have enough gil to buy materials, I trained as a Botanist and collected all of the Moko Grass and Cotton Boll needed to be able to grind thread and cloth. It looks to me like you need to have 400 Moko Grass and 400 Cotton Boll to be situated to craft each item in your Crafting Log that calls for those materials. To collect 400 items takes about two hours of steady harvesting, <heavy sigh>.

Moko and Bolls cost 2 gil each at the vendors so I but those to do all my leveling till 20, and spend maybe 2K max, probably less once you factor in the small amount of gil you get vendoring the items you're making to level.
Your comment about bonus XP is spot on and it's amazing how well you can do with synths +3 or more levels above you, and by not using quick synthing and doing quality increases the XP per Moko or Boll used is even better.
This happy time ends at 20 of course when you start needing Diremite Webs .. and 30 when you need Fleece and have to compete with the RMT (and non-RMT) farmbots having a near monopoly on the few sheep that drop it: one server I play on a stack costs 40k+ due to RMT and player bots.

Each item you make in your crafting log gives you a bonus the first time you make it. You can speed up leveling a bit by making everything in your crafting log at least once. Also, if you are in a GC, make the item for the weaver supply mission daily. It gives reasonable exp as well, and 50% more if you turn in an HQ item. Not as good as leves for leveling, but it's something.
The following posts can help you in the future for leveling with leves.
Triple Turn-in Leves
Always HQ?
The goal is to do the triple turn-in leves and turn in only HQ item for a good chunk of XP.
Ok I read the triple post, but I am unable to post there for whatever stupid reason. So here is my question.
Ok my question is how many HQ items do you have to turn in for the bonus. When I turn in HQ items it says "One or More of your items were HQ" granting you a bonus. So if I have to turn in 3 Shirts, will I get the same bonus if I turn in 1 HQ Pants and 2 Pants... or do I have to turn in 3 HQ Pants for the bonus to activate?
I am not sure on the mixing of HQ with NQ, but from the information that I found on the webOk I read the triple post, but I am unable to post there for whatever stupid reason. So here is my question.

Turning in all HQ is +200% (or triple). For stackables you have to turn in all HQ or all NQ, no mixing. For gear/non-stackables you can mix HQ with NQ and each HQ pieces is worth 1/3rd of that +200% maximum.

One thing that comes to mind is your Grand Company's Company-issue Engineering Manuals. +50% XP never hurts. And try to spend your rested bonus levelling Weaver.

Weaver is not that bad, yarn > cloth > any piece that use them. Weaver is one of the few that the some finish product only use weaver synth.
I love the official forums, they tell you to use the search for thread about what you wanted to talk but when you use it they judge for necro a thread.

A lot of Goldsmith items are like that too, actually. My last GC supply mission for GSM had me make a Garnet Choker, which is GSM all the way down, but the WVR item was Velveteen Bottom--which needs an Iron Ingot.
