    Bad city lag

Has anyone else gotten bad lag or FPS in the cities? I normally run 60+ FPS and as soon as I get into Ul'dah or the other two cites, my FPS drops to 10-15, even though no one is on the screen but me and a few others. Haven't had any issues when I played last weekend.

EDIT: Seems the new version of Firefox (24.0) is the culprit. 16 tabs over three windows still has a small drop. Not sure why.

EDIT THE SECOND: Still get lag even when Firefox is closed now, so that might not be it. Seems to happen only in towns or if there's more than three or four other players around me.

the problem may be coming from objects not on your screen, but elsewhere on your current map.

Can replicate it by going to Little Solace and watch your frame rate drop when you pan your camera in the direction of Hawthorne Hut. You don't see all the models over there, but they are still being managed in memory just the same and it bogs the frame rate.

Compounding things further, a ton of data still has to be delivered from the server regarding everything you might interact with as well, which can create a bit of a problem if you have high latency or high congestion on their end.

So I haven't been on FFXIV for seven hours now. About two hours ago I was on Firefox when I noticed win7 aero theme died. Booted up SIW and found out that my CPU was sitting around 97C. Normally it should be in the 35-40ish range. 90-100C is considered the threshold range where stuff can get perma-damaged. I'm thinking that maybe my CPU or even the GPU was overheating from all the dust I just cleaned out. It's almost 4am so I'll have to test it after I get some sleep.

I did some testing and confirmed that it was the CPU. After cleaning the case out, the temperature dropped to 40's to 50's, only peaking at 72C earlier in the day, and on another game. Also I forgot that I was supposed to buy side case fans. Didn't realize the case didn't come with them and just forgot to buy them. That should improve airflow at the least.

So final thoughts: If you got unexpected lag, clean your case! I use SIW to check system temperatures. Look up general temperature ranges for HDD, CPU, and Graphic cards and find out if something is overheating and try to fix it.

Unless your CPU's cooler was completely clogged up with dust your CPU should not be getting that hot even with no case fans, ESPECIALLY sitting relatively idle in Windows.
Still it seems you have fixed it so good luck with no more problems.

The air currents seem to dump all the dust and dirt into my room. Also I've got three short haired dogs, two of which like to hang out in my room. It gets bad quick.
